Yeah, i was going to say.. But it's already been said. You should always leave your caps on when not using the camera or the lenses. If something gets in behind the glass, the lens is pretty much worthless and will lose all value.
Yeah, i thought that maybe as you didn't have it on the camera, maybe you might not with your lenses. It was just a tip (that can save you time and money) :P
i hope your 18-55 wasn't in "AF" when you twisted the hood on and off! (it sounded like it was) that's a good way to ruin the AF motors...though like you said its a cheap kit lens =D
