Everyone who's 20 and younger got introduced to extreme metal by listening to metalcore first, even older people listened to weaker shit first. Perhaps it's a huge step to go from metalcore to OSDM, but you should try some "true" modern metal first, melodic bands like Children of Bodom are often gateway bands to older metal
