Her "screaming" is a difficult singing technique that takes a lot of practice to do it without harming the vocal chords.Haley has the heart and soul of this song.I really love it

Haley has the heart and soul of this song, but a different arrangement of the song would've been better. Haley could've taken the high notes up a notch, true, and if you have seen any of her other videos, you would know she's more than capable.
The fact of the matter is that this was not Haley's best. Not even close actually. Nobody can beat Haley at her best in my opinion.
IMO, Haley's version is a plaintive call to action while Melanie's version has a soaring, uplifting tone to it. I think the former is more appropriate for this song.

@Bolorogo better does not come into it, differently is a more apt word, their interpretations are so very different that you can't really compare. Haley has so many facets to her voice and this performance uses only a small sub-set. Melanie has yet to show anything like Haley's versatility.

Melanie Amaro sang this worlds better!! You could actually hear her passion and emotion when she sang it. Haley didn't hit the notes and shouted the big notes (like she always does). This is supposed to be an inspirational song, but I felt like she was talking AT me when she sang it. Melanie enunciated the words and hit to the heart with her version, and didn't try to hit notes that were out of her range.

I'm not bashing Haley, she was fun to listen to, she just doesn't have all the skills that Melanie has. FYI I don't like Xfactor, I think the structure and format of the show is terrible, but both shows, American Idol, and Xfactor were both designed to keep Simon Cowell in business.

@trumpetzzz I STRONGLY disagree with saying Melanie is more soulful. Listening to her version I hear her trying to hit the notes just like they were, that's not what a real singer or performer should do, Haley really felt it and got into it. Melanie doesn't have much strength when she belts.. Haley does.

Melanie fans are extremely knowledgeable of music, huh? They are keeping alive the performance that nobody gives a crap about. And still Haley's worst is arguably better than Melanie's best. Hmm, that's pathetic. X Factor is pulling off the ratings of "the voice" and the similarity as well is the show's about the mentors and judges. It is not certain still if Melanie even makes the top 3, but the winner of the voice was an utter failure. No hopes for anyone on the x factor. FACT

@Bolorogo better does not come into it, differently is a more apt word, their interpretations are so very different that you can't really compare. Haley has so many facets to her voice and this performance uses only a small sub-set. Melanie has yet to show anything like Haley's versatility.

The thesis tells your reader what your essay is really about, and it also introduces your three argument. The three arguments goes into something called the body. It's very obvious Haley doesn't have Melanie's power or range, or her timing. If you can't hear it, too bad, you know nothing about vocals. Haley will never be the success Melanie is about to be. Go listen to some Whitney Houston or some Celine, you'll hear the difference, and Melanie's got that same quality, Haley does not.

Melanie Amaro sang this worlds better!! You could actually hear her passion and emotion when she sang it. Haley didn't hit the notes and shouted the big notes (like she always does). This is supposed to be an inspirational song, but I felt like she was talking AT me when she sang it. Melanie enunciated the words and hit to the heart with her version, and didn't try to hit notes that were out of her range.

@yronline how about you open up your ears more, and hear how melanie's voice is so much more out of control and straining in the middle range compared to haley. Haley sings the verses with more emotion too, and you can feel the meaning of the song in her performance, unlike melanie's which is just amplified by all the staging effects

@nigelaquaria :another genius who knows nothing about vocals. It's Melanie's superb control that make her's the best voice on the show. Power, range, precision, timing, it all goes into the package. I'm not bashing Haley, she was fun to listen to, she just doesn't have all the skills that Melanie has. FYI I don't like Xfactor, I think the structure and format of the show is terrible, but both shows, American Idol, and Xfactor were both designed to keep Simon Cowell in business.

@MrJas2241 Excuse me, did you hear melanie's voice crack when she started the first line of the chorus of I have nothing in the top 17? Unlike haley, who has the greatest vocal control out of all the contestants in that season, I can tell when melanie is straining her voice to hit the notes. She has a weak middle range. Haley, on the other hand, can do a lot of things with her voice, whistling, belting, growling, yodelling, rasps etc. and i have never heard her pitchy before.

American Idol is the dying show in a small theatre compared to XFactor which is the super hyped up new show in a huge theatre. @LookingAtYouFool Great comment. Haley knows her craft, and she knows that she knows it. So it must have been hard to listen to critics that know so little about singing. It was a bit like having a doctoral thesis judged by a high schooler. Given the quality of their comments, I thought she was remarkably polite.
I think she sang precisely as she intended. Did she make artistic mistakes? Not in my mind. Nor am I sufficiently arrogant to substitute my artistic judgment for hers.
