It hurts me as so when foreign people try to learn something, they take it to their own advantage. UFC for example. Some even learn off the videos and make it into military methods and new styles in the west. And a lot of warlords of China in the past have done the same thing (so this stuff isn't new). The peaceful methods and vegetarian lifestyle of the Shaolin is the truest example of martial arts discipline. Bruce Lee even mention that the best art is to win without a strike being struck.

For all asking about a price, there is none, you must have a counsel with the Abbot, if he finds you are genuine then you will be allowed to train; you must give up all of your possessions and sign away any inheritance to the monastery, and you will be required to work for the food you receive, and a place to stay, not work like get a job, but doing errands for masters and for people of town. More like community service. It is well worth it.

There is a Training centre in china that is the best for shaolin kung fu (for foreigners) called the international kung fu training centre i think. it only costs like £300 (bowt $450) for training , food and a place to stay a month. im not a advertiser im just trying to give away useful info :)

I can tell u that Shaolin monks train every day not only to defend themselves, but to let their qi, their internal enegy, grow, and to understand life. Because when you train, when you're really into it, u're free from the exernal world, u're alone with yourself, and with nature. u become like an animal, which is a good thing because animals have an inner wisdom, and like a plant because plants are the ultimate form of life, the quitest but most full of life. There have always been some women who trained in Kung-fu. Yim Wing Chun was one which is why the style Wing Chun was named after her. Just as there are monks there are also nun's who trained in Gung-fu as well. China still has limitations on how might be allowed in those large schools but actually many of the best teachers are no longer in China but in schools in the US and Canada since that is where most of the real masters migrated to during the upheaval of the cultural revolution.

Women are very popular in Wushu in China, but I saw a girl shaolin before. It was on fight quest, the Kung fu episode. But to be honest, I don't think women are alowed to be monks in the Buddhist religion, kind of like how women can't be priests in the Catholic church.

Women can train with the monks but there is not many women who wish to persue such a thing.

You don't see them here, but I've watched Chinese documentaries before and I've seen women in them, even in Shaolin. However they are only a handful. I remember the Hong Kong documentary I watched there were only 6 girls compared to the thousands of boys in Shaolin temple.

I constantly discuses martial arts and self-defense with people on youtube, thats a very great and fast way to learn new thing and it dont cost me any thing.
