hard carapace should function as a shell, like the hull of mechanical ships...that could create isloation from the vacuum and a steady environment (inside the shell) for all the bilogical organs...now propulsion would be more of a mystery but one could assume that expeled gas could do that (Zerg flyers do cost a lot of vespene don they?)

@skyraptor i've always wondered that too. there's no air to propel themselves in space and inertia laws would dictate that something needs to act upon them otherwise they would just flop around in the same spot

@skyraptor Well, the Zerg did assimilate a number of space dwelling life-forms (precursors to the Overlords, likely) into the Swarm. I must assume that these lifeforms had both dense, sealed carapaces to protect against the vaccum of space yet could generate enough body heat to keep their organs and muscle systems metabolizing.
