  • Love it, can I get it fro iPad??? My favourite game of all. Time, along with elite and red dead revolver

  • Is it possible to play this game in vice with the 6510 max out in overclock spped?

  • This game was freaking awesome

  • We had a copy of this from a double cassette player, and no instructions so never enjoyed it..... ):

  • nice review! my first console! c64!

     you should work on Radio.

  • best game ever created. i have the AMIGA VERSION i am in level 331.

  • I checked my C64 game box, and yes, at least in the UK it must have been called Sentry, because that's what my box says!I will have to load it on my C64 tomorrow and see what the screen says! :)

  • On the C64 it was called Sentry wasn't it? At least in the UK and America - I think anyway!

  • @HardWarUK

It's the territory, not the platform: as you suggest, the game was sold as "The Sentry" (all formats) in the US. Certainly NOT called "The Sentry" in the UK: Firebird and Geoff Crammond are both from the UK, and they named the game "The Sentinel".

  • Great review. Thanks!!

  • My favourite game of all time. I've lapped it on the 64, Amiga and PC. A Geoff Crammond masterpiece. Atmosphere, gameplay, just awesome. I still give the PC version a run now and then.

You can't actually finish the game. When you finish a late level, like 9986, it clocks back to the early levels. i.e. If you finish level 9986 with 30 energy units, you go to level 16.

  • Fantastic game, and along with System shock, one of my favourite ever.

  • Gotta love this game. Oh, and DigitalOrigins has just released a version of this on the iPhone called Capita. Works really well with the touchscreen too.

  • Great game to select for your first review. The Sentinel is one of my top 3 games of all time - and liek you I played it on the C64. Your comment about playing it in the dark and the creeping tension is spot on. In relation to review style, your dead-pan voice is good, your comments area great - but the tribute bit at the end is superfluous. But, top points for highlighting the game and the superb way you described it!

  • Looks Gorgeous this game :O

seems atmospheric even when there's not much sound :O

  • this was a different class altogether. it was Commodore 64 gaming moving on from Monty to stuff like this or The Guild of Thieves. You had to have a floppy disk drive to enter this realm.

Remember? first you had the cartridge era, then Turbotape, then THE GOLDEN AGE, then, this. And on to the era when C=64 had to rival (or try to) with Amiga 500...

    Great times, insane game design.

We were graced with playing these classic titles.

  • superb review, was a great game, filled with suspence and tension, due to the speed of the actions and the omnipresent sentinel, you were hooked, had to absorb him and that was that, the graphics were very eighties, neon blues and greens large polygons, first proper vr game really. well done.

  • Great review. One question, are trees respawning?

  • The energy which the sentinel absorbs manifests as trees on random spots.

  • @Galimah I think the Sentinel puts the trees back into the landscape after he has stolen your energy , and so makes the trees with the energy he has stolen from you? not sure tho

  • I still play this game - My all time favorite. And still haven't beaten it. Great review. :)

  • What level are you up to? a friend of mine played it off and one for over 10 yeas and got to about level 4000?

  • Also do you think anyone ever finished it? I've never heard of anyone doing so

  • You have a soothing voice and presented a thoughtful analysis.

  • nice looking game. games like that have such a good odd atmosphere i think...i love the feel of them

this has quite a nice gameplay aspect, the whole absorbing thing and copies of yourself...i think ill go see about getting it

  • Thank you 2econd for posting this. The whole vid and talk over was excellent!!!!

  • The greatest game I have ever played.

geoff Crammond you are a GENIUS!!!!

  • Incredibly frustrating game. I don't think I ever got past the second level or so.

  • I agree, the 8-bit versions are frustrating. On the other hand, the Amiga version is very fast and very fun.

  • I worked for Firebird at the time of this, as a consultant, and went to the Computer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, a trade show, with two Firebird Director's! Good times! Great games!

  • I bought this game on the strength of the review in Zzap!64 magazine, by Julian Rignall and Gary Penn (jeez I just remembered their names after all these years). They raved about it so much they even refused to give it a rating because they felt it was so original and not suitable to judge by any normal standard. I totally agreed with them. It was by far the most original video game I had ever played and it stimulated my mind more than anything else at the time.

  • huh, never had this on my game-packed C64 o.0 Haven't even heard of it before.

Too bad, I would have loved this in my young days ...

  • Thank you! I was really curious about this game. Haven't played it, but I love the other creations of Geoff Crammond. I'm gonna give this one a try for sure!

  • I used to love this. Why hasn't someone thought about remaking this for the DS? It'd be perfect with the touchscreen.

  • Un seul jeu dépasse SENTINEL de Firebird :

ARCHIPELAGOS de Logotron, sur Amiga notamment, plus stratégique, et toute une vie ne suffirait pas à terminer ses 10000

    niveaux...

    Neverending story...

  • best game of all time. Geoff Crammond, a fuckingenius.

  • excellent review keep them coming

  • I have to say that your review was very good. You talked about many different aspects of the game and you explained them very well. Great job.

  • Great first review 2econd2tage. Well put together and much more informative than the stuff I produced when I first started out. You explained how the game works and what is good about it.

The Sentiinel a tough game to cover as this title is pretty unqiue. What with it's 3D old school graphics and the way you have to plan out how to move by absorbing stuff and making copies.

Good stuff. Many thanks for the mention and keep up the good work.

  • I like your voice.

This review is severely underrated, also!

    Great job.

  • Nice video! I can't believe its your first video, it was very well done and came across as entertaining yet professional. I have to say this game looks very ahead of it's time! (1986 wasn't exactly the year of 3D graphics) Can't say I have played this though.

+ I agree Dentolux and Jedite obviously put a lot of time into their reviews and it pays off bigtime. It's good to see another reviewer on YouTube, so keep up the good work!
