  • Pat plays Ovation 1763

  • it's like walking on heaven

  • Agreed for sure. Getz was so sugary and slick certainly not a monster innovator like Joe or Coltrane. I had heard that Getz was a bit much personality wise. Thanks for keeping the conversation civilized, it seems to be a bit of a rarity here on utube.

  • @guyfidelity I wonder if you’re equating the abiliity to play melodically with being “slick”? I'd recommend listening to some of the music Stan recorded with Kenny Barron, Laurindo Almeida, or with his own groups, which at times included Horace Silver, Chick Corea, Jimmy Raney, etc. He possessed gorgeous tone, unerring pitch, unique lyricism, a sophisticated harmonic concept, and impeccable phrasing.

Humans are complicated. Not every great artist has a congenial personality. So.

  • Zero dislikes - damn straight. Man is joe great makin' Stan proud for sure. Beautiful tone indeed

  • @guyfidelity pffft. Making Stan proud? Henderson blows Getz off the chart. Have you heard Henderson's album of Jobim tunes: Double Rainbow? Makes Getz look like an amateur. Peace.

  • @SaXDuDe17 OK so you don't like Stan and your a sax player. Getz was no monster but to quote Coltrane..."We all wish we could play a sweet as Stan"

  • @guyfidelity Who's Coltrane?....... Nah just messing with you. Respect though. Good comeback. :) Ironic how in personality Coltrane was far more peaceful and played agressively whereas Getz from all reports was a douche and played with such a sweet tone- just random facts. Peace.

  • Nothing's more beautiful to me than this. Bossa Nova always got to me and this is classic. I love Joe Henderson....all the guys. Thanks for the post, I need a vacation. :D

  • OMG! Beautiful solo by Joe Henderson!

  • E gads! Who did (not do) the lighting? Was there a power failure or something? This incredible ensemble - playing in the dark. (Guess it was all about ambiance, Hey?)

  • nice ! ですね.

  • When was this recorded? Such beautiful music!

  • Joe has such elegance!

  • The most interesting about Jobim is that he composed two songs for each melody in Garota da Ipanema, Dindi, Desafinado, Insensatez (How Insensitive) ... One in English and one in Portuguese. Except you know both languages, you'll miss one of them and half of the beauty of his poetry.

Simply amazing. Portuguese lyrics with Brazilian structure, English lyrics with American English structure. Respecting peculiarities.

"Só privilegiados tem ouvido igual ao seu, eu possuo apenas o que Deus me deu!"

  • What beautiful son!

  • Unique! the sun shone a lot that day previously this unique show, an ultra special event, three masters together!

  • @SynclavierMPDR Can't agree more, Sync! So rare, indeed!!!

  • Outstanding!!!

  • @ferchw PAT in tuxedo for Ripley, ain't dear Fer? ;) so elegant and belo, belo as he always is notwithstanding he wears, such fine a man & Artist!!!

  • So beautiful.

  • I chose to turn my deteriorating VHS copy of this program into a DVD over baby footage and home videos. This was the best PBS special ever made.

  • Almost better than sex

  • admirable discipline playing the sax, very cultured, very educated sax.

  • I saw this on PBS when it was first on in 1994 and taped it...what luck!! The entire show is a great performance...this piece is fabulous....I love how the sax comes in!

  • Wow!!! Pat Metheny in a tux. Wow!!!

I love it. Metheny comping the Bossa Nova in the classic style. And Joe Henderson - what a beautiful tone and touch he has. He was made for the Bossa Nova. Jobim is Bossa Nova. Two of my idols (Jobim and Metheny).

  • Joe Henderson, Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden and Al Foster and Tom The Genius Jobim. It´s the Dream Team.

  • instant favorite

  • joe henderson has a beautiful tone

  • PAT IN A TUX!!!!!! THAT'S A FIRST!

  • yeah!! omg

  • Al FOSTER is the BEST!

  • actually, although Tom never had a "colourful" voice, this song (called Offkey in englishs) is referring to the concept that bossa nova (brazilian jazz) was considered offkey by the 50's and 60's conventional brazillian society.

  • That reference to 'perfect pitch' will be a sly dig at his own quavering vocal, will it? Nice touch if so. Must have been something to witness this.
