@vineyardhouse I agree with this, it's a shame some of the footage was destroyed, I believe if it was re-released for I don't know an anniversary or something, they should reedit the other stuff back in
Everyone seems confused about the sleeping bag kill. IT was three times in the theatrical release. I was there. I saw it. The audience went nuts and loved it. When the VHS came out they had cut it down to once. Paramount did not like the reaction. This longer version was cut before it hit theaters. But the three swing version is in EVERY PRINT that opened across the country May 13, 1988.
Director John Carl Buechler did a good job with his directing and his work on the special effects in this film. It was too bad that all of the graphic and gory scenes have been deleted.
"not so explicite by the standards of today" he sayes, .. . but, really, THAT stuff wasn't so bad for the time this flick was made & released ! I mean, this was the late 80's here, .. hadn't there already been a whole shitload of spectacularly gory "splatter" movies by THAT time, .. like Peices, Evil Dead, The Thing, Reanimator, Dr. Butcher M.D., Alien, Dawn of the Dead, I Spit On Your Grave, Faces of Death, Canibal Holocaust, Zombie, .. or even the earlier Friday the 13th films ?
@Skulldini Alien, spectacularly gory? Even the Thing wasn't SUPER gory, tho the effects were amazing. I believe most of the other movies you listed, did not get by with an R rating. Friday the 13th part 7 was trimmed to achieve an R rating. So you can't compare 'em. If Buechler wanted to go unrated, then yeah, different story.
@kcmet79 Well Alien, though maybe not a GORE flick, was quite groundbreaking in its time ( with it's "chest burster" scene and stuff ) and, I would at least say, a crucial influence on the whole "splatter" film phenomenon of the 80's.
I'm pretty sure the MPAA keeps somewhat clean copies of everything that gets submitted to it in its own archives. Has anyone ever thought to just ask to have the censored material back for the uncut DVD?
I feel bad for him. He put all that work into this film, only to get the majority of it cut, and it just didn't have the same effect. To top that off, the original reels were destroyed, so this was all he could show.
What they should do is release a Blu-Ray of this with both the normal Theatrical version AND the full workprint version both on the same disk. That way, we can get both.

The decayed father was much better in the slashed scene... and when he came back up and smiled at her... perfection.

Poor Bernie Lomax, gets a saw to the gut in this movie then a hot dose in Weekend at Bernies. Someone had it out for Terry Kiser.

Are these from the single DVDs Paramount released a couple of years ago or are they from the coming box set?

@hobohaymaker13 The original reels were destroyed, so therefore all we would have is a low quality vhs workprint.
