National Day of Prayer? If you're just going to sit on your ass and do nothing, you might as well just declare it a day off. Go to the beach or something fun like that.
What a halfhearted attempt to influence a supreme entity. Think BIG! Throwing a few hundred virgins in an active vulcano is a much more impressing sign of worshipping than merely some devotional blah blah.
@Jesusthemessiahd4ms Logic will tell you that Hell is nothing more than a threat aimed at intimidating and coercing you into a belief system that is illogical, and is not backed up with one shred of hard evidence. Any "god" that has to rely on fear and intimidation to get people to believe in him is certainly not worthy of my worship or yours. Tell me--would you torture your own children for all eternity simply for doubting you?
@Nails077 Why vote for just a day, when that happens everyday. People need to open thier eyes and ears to the bible, and not some theory that has so much evidence, that was gathered by a man, who is prone to make mistakes. Let God be the only truth, and every man a liar.
@Jesusthemessiahd4ms I pray that one day you find God, and that you walk away from this wicked atheist lifestyle of yours. Once His holy spirit fills you up you will finally be able to grasp what th real importance of the world is, and that is lift up His name in glory. Accept Jesus into you heart, and you will be saved from hellfire. Just remember it's never to late to do the right thing, and stop sinning every day of your life.

Why is it necessary to "come out" as an atheist in America? It's supposed to be a tolerant society! In Britain the vast majority of people aren't that bothered about religion, and those who are don't tend to pay too much attention to the rest so far as their beliefs go. I genuinely don't know. I'm American, but I recently spent several months in England, and I loved how relaxed people were about others' beliefs. "But as many as receive Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name" (John 1:12).
"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them" (Ephesians 2:8-10).
"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."
"This hobbit was a very well-to-do hobbit, and his name was Baggins. The Bagginses had lived in the neighbourhood of The Hill for time out of mind, and people considered them very respectable, not only because most of them were rich, but also because they never had any adventures or did anything unexpected: you could tell what a Baggins would say on any question without the bother of asking him."
Gen 6:6 And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.
Gen 6:7 So the LORD said, "I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them."
"Once there were four children, Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy, who were sent from London during the war to live in the country house of an old Professor and his housekeeper, Mrs. Macready. She was not fond of children, and he was a very old man with shaggy white hair, which grew over most of his face as well as on his head."
""This house is so big that no one will mind what we do," said Peter. "Let's explore tomorrow."
Everyone agreed to this, and that was how the adventure began. The first few doors the children tried led to spare bedrooms. Then came a long room full of pictures and a suit of armor; and after that, three steps down and five steps up, a whole series of rooms lined with books, some bigger than a Bible, and lastly, a room that was empty except for one big wardrobe with a mirror in the door."
""Nothing there!" said Peter, and they all trooped out again--except Lucy. She looked inside the wardrobe and saw several fur coats hanging up. She got in among them and kept her arms stretched out in front of her in order to not bump into the back of the wardrobe."
If you aren't a collection of chemical reactions, then stop eating and drinking. You'll soon realize that you won't me around much longer without these things to fuel your chemical reactions.
valu777: I have to ask. If you're wrong (and I'm asserting that you are), what would be the ramification for you?
Would it make your question your faith in God or Jesus? Would it make you reconsider the bible? What, realistically, would such a hypothetical outcome prove to you?
I can safely say that anything I currently hold true will be immediately dismissed if reasonably proven false. That's just being rational. But what you're saying is that you'll continue to believe, in blind faith, "facts" that are proven to be false.
I understand that you think faith, god, etc are beyond the rules of logic, but they aren't. Some ideas can be proven true or false. Predictions like yours certainly fall into this category. I would advise doing some research on critical thinking.
"Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear" (Hebrews 11:1).
notice SUBSTANCE & EVIDENCE not blind christians never have blind faith
An actual definition from a dictionary (not a bible):
faith: belief that is not based on proof
I'm glad you addressed substance and evidence. Your last comment affirms the point I originally made regarding evidence. As you just stated, your faith is subject to evidence. As such, this negates your previous statement. So then, could you modify your original statement to reflect your last comment?
Again, If EVIDENCE were to REASONABLY disprove your faith, would your then adjust your beliefs?
"a Jewish jubilee is 50 years" - true, but that is not a generation. You can look it up on Wikipedia. How will your beliefs change if Jesus does not return by 2017?
He will never come. The reason being he never was a physical being. He is a mental construct. A place holder for kindness and love. Totally unlike the Old testament god who was all Jealousy and Vengeance, Wrath and Brimstone.

When a person trusts Christ they are saved from the penalty or consequences of sin. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life (John 5:24).
When a person trusts The Force, they are saved from the penalty and consequences of the Dark Side. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who follows the ways of the force and believes in it has everlasting life and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into the forceplane (Yoda 5:24)
I still haven't come out to my family or most of my friends for the most part that im an atheist. It really is shows like this one and other things youtubers do (like donexodus2 and cdk007) that have supported my growth and have shown me that being a skeptic is a good thing. So i would like to thank every one who is proud to be an atheist and i hope one day i can get up the courage to join your ranks.
I was in the same position. The easy way to start talking is just ask for answers (A good place to find questions is "10 questions every intelligent christian must answer". Just start asking those questions, the if they ask if you believe in god, just say no.
just a word of advice on the telling of family members i was bold and just came striaght out with it. and when my family starts talking to me again ill let you know how it turned out :) (yes i'm serious 10 years of avoidance and counting p.s i'm 18 now)
I'm in a similar position. I have told my friends, and they are still my friends (even the serious Christians). However, my family still doesn't know because I don't know how they will react if I ever get the confidence to tell them, but right now, I'm scared out of my mind.
I think they should let them make a National day of Prayer for one year, and at the same time, grant the same for most other religions. See how they feel about it if their Nation day of Pray is right after the Nation day of Satanic Goat Sacrifices and just before the Moa day of Canabalism.
Maybe instill forced school prayer, but every day go down a list of religions they have to make a prayer from alphabetically, starting with the A's, forcing Christian children to adhere to OTHER religions.
The National Day of Prayer is very unconstitutional and would go against all that the founding fathers stood for. If we have a National Prayer Day, then it seems only fair that we should have a National Day of Wiccan Ceremonies, a National Day of Meditation, etc. We should also have a "Constitution Remembrance Day" and a "National Day of Being Rational."
Forgive me if I am mistaken (it's been a while since I've wandered through the Bible) but didn't Jesus himself say something about how true believers should pray in private since those who pray in public and for show have already received their reward?Something for the theocrats to think about.
If you read the bible, you'll understand how little anybody else reads it. As the saying goes, "The top source of Atheism, if read correctly, is the Bible."
There are so many things in it that almost no Christians seem to know of, or simply never think of it, and that's why I've taken upon myself to at least raise conciousness-- to break this numbness beleivers seem to have towards what they claim to beleive.
Wow, I did a quick search and Washington did not set aside that day. So either I am not finding a resource that says so, or certain religious people are lying once again.
I freaked out when I realized my 15 year old son was watching atheist videos, especially The Atheist Experience, on Youtube. I decided to see what kind of shit they loaded my son's mind with. Two hours later I said " So I am an Atheist." Thank you for the videos.
I always wondered why xtians even went to church in the first place. Don't they believe that god hears all prayers, no matter where your are? Why need a building or group? Just think your prayer quietly and he will hear, right? Stupid fundies. Our little town had a 1/4 page ad in the local paper just before this prayer day, urging folks to gather downtown. I think I will put an ad to urge folks to come downtown to meet and talk about how crazy fundies are. I bet I would get some neg. letters!
Jesus himself (if he existed at all, of course) in the Biblical texts says "go in your room and close the door." Not "whine at people for not praying in public."
Exactly. Jesus says to pray in silence and not to attention whore. They don't even follow his teachings as they're written in the gospels.
Also shows you how much more they care about their religion and its acceptance in the government (ala theocracy-like) than their country's constitution.
Quite right. The attention they've received politically the past 30 years has spoiled them so much that they don't realize the power they're "losing" is putting things back in balance. Gone are the days of mandating "prayer days" and enforced prayer in school, and backwards attempts to teach creation in science classes.
One can hope its in its death throes... leave theocracies to Turkey, Syria and Iran. The Constitution gives us freedom of AND from religion.
Nothing. There are five or six people who take turns hosting The Atheist Experience. Matt takes three shows in a row, then gets a day off about every fourth week, I think. (I'm a regular listener via podcast.)
It was wonderful to hear from that young woman who has recognized atheism. It took me about 30 years to get there. I have Madelyn Murray O'Hare to thank, in part, for her influence. I also learned to think for myself as well as studied science and the history of religion. In answer to those "believers" who say that a-theists have no purpose for life--We only get one life to live. What better reason does anyone need to live it well! elcee

Textra1 2 years ago
""This house is so big that no one will mind what we do," said Peter. "Let's explore tomorrow."
Everyone agreed to this, and that was how the adventure began. The first few doors the children tried led to spare bedrooms. Then came a long room full of pictures and a suit of armor; and after that, three steps down and five steps up, a whole series of rooms lined with books, some bigger than a Bible, and lastly, a room that was empty except for one big wardrobe with a mirror in the door."
Textra1 2 years ago
""Nothing there!" said Peter, and they all trooped out again--except Lucy. She looked inside the wardrobe and saw several fur coats hanging up. She got in among them and kept her arms stretched out in front of her in order to not bump into the back of the wardrobe."

6 questions for you valu777
1 What about being made of "meat and chemicals" makes one valueless?
2 Do you know what the word value means?
3 How does there being no god make a person of no value?
4 Are you saying only a god can assign value to humans, and that humans cannot assign value to themselves?
5 Or are you saying that a being can't assign value to itself?
6 If so, does that mean god has no value because he has no one above him to assign it to him?
I would appreciate honest answers.

If you aren't a collection of chemical reactions, then stop eating and drinking. You'll soon realize that you won't me around much longer without these things to fuel your chemical reactions.

If the word of God were food, it would have a few good parts, but would be overwhelmingly gross.
"And thou shalt eat it [as] barley cakes, and thou shalt bake it with dung that cometh out of man, in their sight."- Ezekiel 4:12
If your God tells you to eat food cooked over human feces _find a new God_.
I can go on and on and on for pretty much _the entire damn book_. If you think it's a good read, you obviously skipped some parts.

I can't take you seriously since nothing you say has a clear point. You sound like you are on serious drugs.
Matthew 24:34: Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.
Luke 21:32: Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, till all be fulfilled.
Oops. Guess Jesus is a little late.

valu777: I have to ask. If you're wrong (and I'm asserting that you are), what would be the ramification for you?
Would it make your question your faith in God or Jesus? Would it make you reconsider the bible? What, realistically, would such a hypothetical outcome prove to you?
Skullpudding 2 years ago
my faith i dont question as it is spiritual its not from the mind
valu777 2 years ago
I can safely say that anything I currently hold true will be immediately dismissed if reasonably proven false. That's just being rational. But what you're saying is that you'll continue to believe, in blind faith, "facts" that are proven to be false.
I understand that you think faith, god, etc are beyond the rules of logic, but they aren't. Some ideas can be proven true or false. Predictions like yours certainly fall into this category. I would advise doing some research on critical thinking.
Skullpudding 2 years ago
"Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear" (Hebrews 11:1).
notice SUBSTANCE & EVIDENCE not blind christians never have blind faith
we have the faith of Jesus
valu777 2 years ago
An actual definition from a dictionary (not a bible):
faith: belief that is not based on proof
I'm glad you addressed substance and evidence. Your last comment affirms the point I originally made regarding evidence. As you just stated, your faith is subject to evidence. As such, this negates your previous statement. So then, could you modify your original statement to reflect your last comment?
Again, If EVIDENCE were to REASONABLY disprove your faith, would your then adjust your beliefs?

A generation is 20 - 25 years, not 50 years. 1967 + 25 years = 1992. Did Jesus return? What will you think when 2017 comes and goes and no Jesus?

a Jewish jubilee is 50 years = 1 generation
valu777 2 years ago
"a Jewish jubilee is 50 years" - true, but that is not a generation. You can look it up on Wikipedia. How will your beliefs change if Jesus does not return by 2017?
fxrams 2 years ago
He will never come. The reason being he never was a physical being. He is a mental construct. A place holder for kindness and love. Totally unlike the Old testament god who was all Jealousy and Vengeance, Wrath and Brimstone.

When a person trusts Christ they are saved from the penalty or consequences of sin. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life (John 5:24).

I was in the same position. The easy way to start talking is just ask for answers (A good place to find questions is "10 questions every intelligent christian must answer". Just start asking those questions, the if they ask if you believe in god, just say no.

Forgive me if I am mistaken (it's been a while since I've wandered through the Bible) but didn't Jesus himself say something about how true believers should pray in private since those who pray in public and for show have already received their reward?Something for the theocrats to think about.
bkelsey4 2 years ago
If you read the bible, you'll understand how little anybody else reads it. As the saying goes, "The top source of Atheism, if read correctly, is the Bible."
There are so many things in it that almost no Christians seem to know of, or simply never think of it, and that's why I've taken upon myself to at least raise conciousness-- to break this numbness beleivers seem to have towards what they claim to beleive.

I bet I would get some neg. letters!

Well, the cross is an idol and it clearly says not to worship idols, but hey it's christianity; it doesn't have to make any sense.
apocalypseap 2 years ago
Jesus himself (if he existed at all, of course) in the Biblical texts says "go in your room and close the door." Not "whine at people for not praying in public."
DeadlyChinchilla 2 years ago
Exactly. Jesus says to pray in silence and not to attention whore. They don't even follow his teachings as they're written in the gospels.
Also shows you how much more they care about their religion and its acceptance in the government (ala theocracy-like) than their country's constitution.
apocalypseap 2 years ago 2
Quite right. The attention they've received politically the past 30 years has spoiled them so much that they don't realize the power they're "losing" is putting things back in balance. Gone are the days of mandating "prayer days" and enforced prayer in school, and backwards attempts to teach creation in science classes.
One can hope its in its death throes... leave theocracies to Turkey, Syria and Iran. The Constitution gives us freedom of AND from religion.

It was wonderful to hear from that young woman who has recognized atheism. It took me about 30 years to get there. I have Madelyn Murray O'Hare to thank, in part, for her influence. I also learned to think for myself as well as studied science and the history of religion.
