i use organic compost and have now to my own compost from the last two years, this seemed to produce the best growth, also make sure your seeds are fresh, I had a dissapointing cauliflower growth last year since the seeds were a couple of years old, my courgettes and peppers etc were fine though, good luck :)

I did have strawberries in hanging baskets my tip and to stop the birds, I put a small windmill toy(type you can get on a beach for sandcastles) into the pot to keep birds off the fruit they can decorative aswell as a fun for the children to look at .
