It's amazing how this very complex situation has been made out to be a Campbell massacring the MacDonald. I'm amazed that it still brings strong emotions out in the Scots after 300 years.
Here are some of the names of Glencoe cattle-stealing clansmen on trial in 1639 (Lowland English spelling): Alester McRonald m'Ean Dowie, Donald McRonald, Gilespik McInnes McEane Dui, Alester McInnes vic Eane Dui, John Dowie McCondachie vic Eane, Duncan McCondachie vic Findla vic Rankein yr. - McRankein yr. No MacDonalds there! Also, Dowie and Dui probably mean dubh (black-haired).
A clansman was a Mac, a son of his father who was a son of his father, and so on. A woman was Nic, daughter of ...
Love this documentary, being a McDonald myself...recently had 'Glencoe 13th Feb 1692' tattooed on my forearm. Bit sucky that my bf is a King Billy lover
English bastards! There was four part documentary by the BBC about the scottish military role in the British army. Quebec, The Thin Red Line in the battle of Balaclarva, all the highland regiments and all their successes in major British battles and the impact they have had on the success of the empire. It was on about a year ago last summer I think. It was a pretty good documentary. Showed the empire wouldnt have got far with out the highlander soldiers who were feared and rspected equally.
Wonderful stuff, the place still has a haunting majesty, please dont make a movie of this,if people want to see more of it....GO there, feel it and breathe it!!!
I enjoyed that program so much, I'd get the DVD should my resources stretch that far! All seven posts you put up were so good - thoroughly enjoyed reviewing them! Went to National Library of Scotland to try and find that fantastic map they kept panning over, and to wikipedia, thanks to your posts, and some of the great responses you received! Thank you!
@BillDFC exactly. They saw Scottish rebellion against the English as an easier and cheaper way to beat the English rather than investing their own money and lives. How many times did France fail to turn up after insiting an uprising? Im not sure but it must have been quite a few.
Ironic that the Ulster protestant orange men, many who are scottish decent, and blow their bag pipes at rallies worship a king who was NEVER a friend to the highlanders or loyal scottish nationalist. For the ulster scots to join with england AGAINST their fellow celt is not only ugly in a "Judas" way, it shows how england has sucessfully conquered by division through bribery. The ulster orange scots will likely be betrayed by england anyway. The devil ALWAYS repays loyalty to him with betryal.
I completely agree! I lived in N Ireland for 7 years, the vast majority had no clue of the history! When, as a Scot, well versed in Scottish history I challenged them it was 'mumble, mumble our land, the 70's, the IRA, The battle of the Boyne ' they don't want to be educated. I was brought up Protestant and have strong McDonald blood so feel I am pretty balanced with regards to my views on the matter. Even then when I explained I was a McDonald descendant I was called 'a tim'! LOL!
I hope that the Scots and Irish wake up to the disloyalty shown to them all by, at the time of the GR and Wm III, the big central governments run primarily by the new central banks who helped fund Wm III's takeover and his on-going war with France.
@bellm8 the division was ony possible due to the greed and treachory of the nobles and rich of Scotland. They always sold out their country and their countrymen for gold. If the Scots had united against the british from the start they would have won their independence sooner. English are always the easy scapegoats in what was always very complicated politics. "Over simplified" as explained in this programme.
Thanks for uploading this great program.
