My Nan passed away in January and when my Mum was going through her things she noticed my Nan had left this song with a note to say to play it at her funeral. It ,was clear that it was, for her, all about seeing my Grandad and her husband, who passed away 7 years ago. Everything I Own was written by him with thoughts of his father, I wonder if it was his wife that he had in mind on this tune? I always liked his music and John Denver's. My dad was also a professional musician and so music became a large part of our family. The 70's was a tough time for everone growing up, both for parents and children alike. He's very wrong, millions want to hear his music. He got into legal fights with Griffin over the name Bread and lost the lawsuit (a rarity) and retired after his solo career ended in the 80's. He should have just kept touring as "David Gates" of Bread through the 80's, 90's and even beyond. As well as writing great new ballads and performing them on his tours, and releasing them to perhaps a more limited but very appreciated fan base and of course online (the new music medium of this age)!!!!
I listened to Bread when I was a child. At the time, I didn't understand it because I am from a different country, but I love the melody. Then I came to this country, learn enough English to understand the songs, and I love them too. Now I watch him perform on youtube, I guess I can say that I love him as well. Bread is essential to the body, just as his songs are essential to the soul. I believe that is the reason behind the name of the band. I love Bread.

The cowboy hat is because he lives on a ranch and is in fact a real rancher which is why he originally left the music business. David Gates is as good as ever cowboy hat and all!
David actually sold his ranch in about 1994 and now lives in San Diego. He has worn hats for years - I think because he has lost his hair in the front! He is still gorgeous.

Hear hear!! I never listen to modern music - if you can call it that. David's music is in my heart and I hear it all the time in my head - it is timeless, melodic and romantic - just wonderful.
He's one of the best song writers of all time.... not to mention a pretty good singer AND musician. I consider him a musical genius. Bread was my favorite group in the early 70's and when Gates went solo he was just as good, if not better! I regret that I never saw Bread live, although I did see Botts as drummer for a Dan Fogelberg concert (which was also great!).
Totally agree! I saw a Bread concert in the UK in 1996/7 when they did the world tour and then David in 2003 when he toured the UK. Mike was a great drummer and contributed a lot to Bread. Best band ever and DG is my hero!

I feel the same way! I don't listen to any of the new songs either. David Gates is very unique. When I went to David Gates and Bread's last concert I had the chance to personally tell David Gates, Larry Knechtel, Jimmy Griffin, and Mike Botts how much I loved their music and how much it meant to me while I was growing up. David is just as humble and sincere off stage as he is on stage. I hope David Gates has a concert someday soon!

Many years ago, I bought one of his very first CD's that is country. It sounded way too contemporary and more soft rock than country. The songs that he wrote and recorded were good, but really did not sound anywhere near to be country.
old type of songs always have a deeper meaning... new songs sometimes keeps on repeating statements... although I still like them but old song composers do it by heart not just more on gaining income maybe that is why it touches heart

David appears to have retired, I'm afraid, but he seems to be still fit, playing golf, etc., so you never know!!

@gateslover This is exactly why , as i've grown older , I listen to more talk radio than ever before.
Noone and I repeat NOONE makes music that stands the test of time. Noone wants to anymore. It's all about the money. There is no romanticism today. Noone cares about the sound and the meaning. If ever there were one man who you could wish would change the music industry again,....it's David Gates.
How i long for those days, when life was so much easier and a song was always in your heart.

Hear hear!! I never listen to modern music - if you can call it that. David's music is in my heart and I hear it all the time in my head - it is timeless, melodic and romantic - just wonderful.

He's one of the best song writers of all time.... not to mention a pretty good singer AND musician. I consider him a musical genius. Bread was my favorite group in the early 70's and when Gates went solo he was just as good, if not better! I regret that I never saw Bread live, although I did see Botts as drummer for a Dan Fogelberg concert (which was also great!).

Totally agree! I saw a Bread concert in the UK in 1996/7 when they did the world tour and then David in 2003 when he toured the UK. Mike was a great drummer and contributed a lot to Bread. Best band ever and DG is my hero!

@gateslover - I too my friend saw those concerts at the BIC in Bournemouth and can honestly say they were the best concerts I have and ever will see. I sincerely hope that perhaps one date we might see David over here once more but if we don't enjoy your retirement David as my God you have earned it by given us such great and wonderful music that will stand the test of time for many many years to come. hailey145

I feel the same way! I don't listen to any of the new songs either. David Gates is very unique. When I went to David Gates and Bread's last concert I had the chance to personally tell David Gates, Larry Knechtel, Jimmy Griffin, and Mike Botts how much I loved their music and how much it meant to me while I was growing up. David is just as humble and sincere off stage as he is on stage. I hope David Gates has a concert someday soon!

@MrInsidescoop1 All of my great friends have grown old. Somehow you expect them never to change yet ol' Man Time leaves no one behind. A Great Artist yet today and still followed by all the great music lovers of the great music era. Hats off to you David and the group named Bread. Thanks Wiggy.

Dag, his voice sounds the same as it did in the 70's. Talk about some clean living! Most of these kids now sound like hell within 5-10 years.

Many years ago, I bought one of his very first CD's that is country. It sounded way too contemporary and more soft rock than country. The songs that he wrote and recorded were good, but really did not sound anywhere near to be country.

old type of songs always have a deeper meaning... new songs sometimes keeps on repeating statements... although I still like them but old song composers do it by heart not just more on gaining income maybe that is why it touches heart

I agree. He is the absolute consumate artist of this genre. you might even say that David Gates has his own genre. He sings and writes things that from another artist might sound cheesy, but nor from him. He keeps breaking my heart with his songs, and it's an addictive sadness. Thank you David
