If that's how you feel, then by all means, experiment. If you're feeling an attraction to women, then certainly explore it. But if you feel the need to go to 'reparative therapy' in order to 'squelch' your attraction to men, then it's probably not the best. Just do what feels best for you, not for society...

As for the origins of sexuality and therapy involving it, many of the mainstream medical, psychological, and social organisations have released statements condemning 'reparative therapy', and rightly so. These programmes are not aimed at 'helping' these people, but at 'fixing' them. That is not okay.

The molestation was one of the weaker factors which I don't give that much credit to. And you are entirely correct about not being sexually attracted to her... neither of us were sexually motivated by the relationship at all.
There were several very deep seeded psychologically damaging factors here including but not limited to: a castrating mother, an uninvolved father, a molesting brother, a horrible 2 year relationship with a girl. I never had much of a libido to begin with and was always confused about sex but my first sexual experience was with a guy when I was 18.

My life story? because there were a multitude of factors involved in the whole process leading to me embracing a gay lifestyle and the process of finally being delivered from it completely. I have been meaning to produce a personal account or even write a book about my experiences but I will answer any questions you have. It's not as cut and dry as your experience with alcoholism.
I can't explain in words being delivered from something you feel you have no control over but maybe you already know what that feels like. I guess one plus is that along with being delivered from the bondage I was delivered from much persecution. I don't know about all that but my personal testimony is simply this: although at one point I felt deeply compelled to be gay, by the mercy of God I was delivered from that awful reality into a reality I never thought was possible. Well yes, I think it's partly because many "straight" people are attracted to homosexuality more than they want to be reminded, especially those who chose to be straight mainly because of their religious belief that gayness is wrong. Seeing gay people living their lives happily makes them feel uncomfortable, stirs up feelings of regret for their life choices maybe.I find people who are secure in their own heterosexuality don't have any problem at all with other people being gay.

Reparative therapy may work on motivated individuals. The incidence of incurable diseases among gay folks is by itself a reason to get on reparative therapy. Maybe there is no gay gene, but I know without a doubt that I did not choose to be gay and that I cannot choose to be straight. I can pretend I'm straight all I want, but my homosexual desires will still be there. Although I've never personally been through ex-gay therapy, studies show that it does not change a person's sexual orientation.
It's like you never made a conscious decision to be straight... People don't choose to be gay. There is a natural reason, we just don't know it yet.

The evidence is that sexual orientation is genetic - with a number of genes involved. We have a LOT of evidence that sexual orientation is hard wired on the brain in the second trimester of pregnancy... and that it is genetically carried in the maternal line.
The evidence is it starts with genetics and the maternal hormonal environment in the second trimester influences outcome.

But if you feel the need to go to 'reparative therapy' in order to 'squelch' your attraction to men, then it's probably not the best. Just do what feels best for you, not for society...

I agree that many people choose to enter reparative therapy in accordance with their own wishes, however, many times these wishes are fully based in societal prejudice rather than future goals.
As for the origins of sexuality and therapy involving it, many of the mainstream medical, psychological, and social organisations have released statements condemning 'reparative therapy', and rightly so. These programmes are not aimed at 'helping' these people, but at 'fixing' them. That is not okay.

The molestation was one of the weaker factors which I don't give that much credit to. And you are entirely correct about not being sexually attracted to her... neither of us were sexually motivated by the relationship at all.

There were several very deep seeded psychologically damaging factors here including but not limited to: a castrating mother, an uninvolved father, a molesting brother, a horrible 2 year relationship with a girl. I never had much of a libido to begin with and was always confused about sex but my first sexual experience was with a guy when I was 18.

What do you want me to describe? My life story? because there were a multitude of factors involved in the whole process leading to me embracing a gay lifestyle and the process of finally being delivered from it completely. I have been meaning to produce a personal account or even write a book about my experiences but I will answer any questions you have. It's not as cut and dry as your experience with alcoholism.

I can't explain in words being delivered from something you feel you have no control over but maybe you already know what that feels like. I guess one plus is that along with being delivered from the bondage I was delivered from much persecution. The ironic thing now is that the gays are ignorantly attempting to refute my claim as somehow it is offensive to them for a gay to become straight (just like bigbear is with this video). Quite interesting psychology.

I don't know about all that but my personal testimony is simply this: although at one point I felt deeply compelled to be gay, by the mercy of God I was delivered from that awful reality into a reality I never thought was possible. If you want to live a gay lifestyle and truly believe blessed by God to do so then never let any religious conviction affect you ever again. My personal witness says otherwise but maybe this wisdom is only meant for those seeking deliverance.

I find this whole ex-gay rubbish hurtful and offensive and I wish straight people would respect our life choices/ life styles just like we respect theirs.
I'm not a Christian, but I respect Christians' lifestyles. I'm not straight, but I respect their lifestyles. Why can they not accept some people don't share thier faith and sexual preference.

Remove the religion matter from it all, what's left? Compare ALL the successes with ALL the failures, what's left? Well yes, I think it's partly because many "straight" people are attracted to homosexuality more than they want to be reminded, especially those who chose to be straight mainly because of their religious belief that gayness is wrong. Seeing gay people living their lives happily makes them feel uncomfortable, stirs up feelings of regret for their life choices maybe.I find people who are secure in their own heterosexuality don't have any problem at all with other people being gay.

Fist of all, I think you are right on the money with your perspectives. People should understand that Richard Cohen has no background in psychology, psychiatry or mental health. He is not a licensed therapist, and therefore a HACK. Cohen is someone who is potentially harmful to those who are conflicted about their sexual identity, and he provides fuel for the fire of homophobia. He sets gay right back about 50 years.

Studying psychology in a particular area means that one is introspectively in touch with all facets of that field? An intelligent person would rely on someone who has dealt personally with similar issues rather than one who has simply studied them. True wisdom does not come from books. And homophobia? People have quite justifiable reason to be homophobic... there are many sick perverse gays out there that unfortunately give the decent ones a bad name. That's what causes homophobia, not Cohen.

It is wrong to proclaim the biblical view of homosexuality since there is none. This violates the integrity of the individual texts and the biblical witness as a whole. Each reference or allusion to what is today homosexuality must be read in the light of the particular literary cultural, and historic contexts of any particular passage.
