And I suppose death is the "last big performance"/final curtain.
I see this scene as an omen of Polish Weronika's approaching demise.
The symbolism is that an old man's phallus, often, is "dead"(limp/numb)so by exposing it to her he exposes her to (and also "prophecises" her) "death".
There's another linked scene where she calls through her Aunt's window to an old lady struggling with heavy bags. She walks into the distance. Weronika,like the old lady, is also soon to "walk off into the distance"- forever.
