@iamahipo1 yes, Eric is leading the whole song in an open G tuning, the song's key, and is able to do all the riffs and solos, while Duane is in an open D and plays the rhythm, as it's very uneasier to play the riffs in G with all the open strings that Eric can play....
This is one of greatest versions of this song ever. I think it was recorded when the Layla album was recorded, 1970. It is included on the box set of Layla. Great song. Thanks for posting.
If Duane (Skydog) Allman were still with us today I'd bet he'd be the number one headliner on all 3 of Mr. Clapton's Crossroads concerts. Our beloved creator sure handed out some beautiful talent.
Blues like this pass the boundries of time. Those that originally did these songs may have passed on but that does not lessen the value of those that do them now. This is the sweet frosting for my cake and comfort for my soul. If this is not great, than nothing would please you.
I think some guys miss the point - or the evolution - Robert Johnson etc were 3rd or 4th generation bluesmen and died before Clapton was born, Duane died before Derek Trucks was born. It's not who is best or favorite - or who 'stole' from who(m) I'm disheartened when I see those kinds of uninformed comments. Me or my son will play blues cause it speaks to us and we are grateful to those who came before.
This song was from the Layla Sessions, it's on the 20th Anniversary set from 1990.. why they never released this is beside me? It's one of the best songs from the whole sessions.
@liberalinthedesertaz true 'dat ~ thanks for uploading this - and waking up today hearing 'these days' in my 53 yr old head made me remember my estranged brother who for some reason has ignored my son for 16 yrs while we hospiced my Vietnam vet husband who died - such is love...heh...thanks for all the good Duane and Greg songs....loved 'em.
@liberalinthedesertaz You are correct. Should have been included in Layla but I guess because it was just DA and EC it didn't fit into the D & D concept. It was released on the Duane Allman Anthology, shortly after Duane died.
What's TRUELY amazing about this particular session is that they're both blitz on heroin an' ain't missin' time nor lick. The "70s were, no doubt, the best of times!!!
Duane Allman is the greatest of all time. Hendrix and Clapton are great, but Skydog was deadly on that slide. Duane is what inspired me to play slide.
This is an outtake from the Derek and the Dominoes sessions. Didn't make it on there, because, I guess, the album is a heavy electric blues album and all the songs relate to Patti (Boyd) Harrison Clapton. I wish it didn't show Eric with a Strat. Both are on nationals or dobros, etc.
In my opinion the best slide guitarist ever is DA and he is the second coming of Robert Johnson. DA, EC, RJ. The best things that ever happenned to music.
@FaithIlene Its the release year of the album The Blues. i don't have any information when the records were made exactly but most of the stuff are outtakes from the 70's
@soadfe It first appeared on the Duane Allman Anthology album with liner notes by the late great Tom Dowd. This was recorded soon after Duane and Eric had met...its just the two of them with their guitars...spontaneous and unrehearsed. What a gem!
@FaithIlene if you read the credit on the Duane Allman collection "The Anthology" it gives the recording dates. But most artists have so many unreleased songs that their recordings can continue to be released decades after their deaths.
@fanofprotopic it was recorded during the Layla sessions in 1970. (August- to like October I think if memory serves me correct, I don't remember when exactly it was recorded)
duane plays with a glass slide so his tone is more pure but at the same time quieter. clapton plays with a metal slide, giving it that aggressive and loud tone.
@teddyman720 a coricidn bottle, an origional whihc make sit even more unique, i play with a manufactured coricidn style bottle but not one whihc actually was but he got a good sound formt hat and is alldgedly buried with it on his ring finger, left hand
"Both" are playing. It's a slide "duel." I know who's who, and if you knew the players, you'd know the difference. When it came to slide, Clapton didn't hold a candle to Allman - and Clapton would tell you that. Not that you shouldn't be able to hear it for yourself...
the question is... who's playin' Dobro and who's playin' Box Guitar Slide. My guess..??, Duane was always given to allowing the lesser of slide guitar talent come before himself. Dobro: Clapton.
Box Guitar: Duane. Littlie Help..., from someone who knows fer shure....??????
i forgot about this song. i used to love it back when i was starting out on guitar. then i forgot about it and put on this CD last night and loved it again.
I think this song is really cool which is kinda strange cause i heard it in my music history class. and not all the songs i hear in there are worth me paying attention to. so good job eric clapton and you too duane allman
This is such a great track. Probably one of my favorite thingsClapton or Allman has done. I just wonder why this wasn't put on the Layla tracks, it's awesome.
The two greatest guitarists of all time. Period.
