This song will drift out into space, and alien civilizations will know without question that we are, or perhaps were, the coolest race that ever existed.
This is the finest song ever written by the hand of man.
Yes, I think it was the summer of 1982. I was just out of high school and used to listen to this on radio on those hot summer evenings in Brisbane. Life was stretched out before me, full of possibilities. So many memories!
The hairs still stand up on my neck when I hear this and I am 66yrs old this year.Who can stand still when this is playing?I remember seeing them live on "The Tube" on TV and the singer was using 3 or 4 keyboards WoW!Many thanks for posting.
Iva Davies looks like a Mormon missionary in that haircut, LOVE IT though, better than the mullock he sported in the Electric Blue video. I was really just a little girl of seven when this came out; much more appreciation for it now than I did back then!
Smacks a chord. 1 pint maybe laughed, 2 pints listen, 3 pints cry your heart out. It's a tough world. Live it as best you can and look after the ones you love.
I was only a young lad when i heard this song...loved it plus many other songs from this era...i now have a 10 yr old daughter who has a great appreciation for music from 60's-00 and 80's stuff is a big part of it ; ) her fav's are icehouse, tears for fears and men at work...she also loves cold chisel!!!
Ichouse had many hit singles in Australia. Not sure about their international success. They were and always will be a very important part of Australia's rich musical history.
@bartonim - Guy Pratt did go on to play with Bryan Ferry as a solo artist and has more recently played with the re-formed Roxy Music. He actually got his first taste of the big time playing with Icehouse, who were sometimes derided as a Ferry/Roxy/Bowie wannabe band. Pratt met Ferry's producer while recording with Icehouse.
Check out Guy Pratt on bass! He went on to play with Pink Floyd/David Gilmour, Robert Palmer, Jimmy Page and tons of sessions. I think he was the only British guy in this lineup of Icehouse.
Methinks they were called the Flowers when this song came out........? In Britain anyway! I might be wrong but I remember being in the UK when this came out and I'm sure they were called the flowers ?
Thx Tredman, I thought so...... Was a long time ago but I remember this song when I was still in Scotland b4 emigrating to Aus and they were THE FLOWERS
Another Superb song..the good old 80s eh ??? stick this up your rap crap arseholes you stupid little chav sheep tag along white niggers ...........oh good what price is individuality.........
i remember hearing this song for the first time at an "after party". i thought it was bryan ferry (you young'uns won't remember him) cool song any way!!!
When I first heard this I too thought it was Ferry/ Roxy Music. However I also noticed a similarity to David Sylvian (Japan). Odd really as Steve Jansen (Sylvian's brother) ended up recording with Icehouse later on.
Have to agree with you suki...David Sylvian def!! ( hey and cheers for the neg. comment guys!...i love you all.... i wasn't actually saying anything bad... hehe!! )
just an awesome track reminds me of being in primary 7 at rockwell school halloween party in assembley hall just awesome memories xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx sheer brilliance xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
This is brilliant music form the 80's while being in the military I got to visit Australia and the UK and got to see many of the 80's newwave bands in their heyday. I didnt get to see Icehouse until opening a newspaper in LA and they were playing Santa Monica CC that night with the Woodentops awesome show and Iva and the boys played 6 encores

Its when u cut your hair short at the sides, but keep it long at the back... was very popular in the 80`s.. and in Tjecko[slovakia] until 2006 when jagr got rid of his.

I don't get the song lyrically? hey little girl and if you think about it the music is dark too! it's not like a cheerful tune good track though but in this day and age! i don't know but the song just reminds me of perverts. I picture Ian huntley singing it! put this to the lyrics and you'll know what i mean!
I still have the cassette. I first heard this band on a Seattle station in the 80's called the wave. Its amazing how huch now i hear that Roxy Music element now that you mention it. Being a fan of Roxy and Mr. Ferry all those years
This was the first song to get substantial publicity in the UK and when I talk to people about Icehouse this is the only track they know.
For those who really know the bands work then I think Great Southern Land (the exteneded version from the album of the same name) is without doubt their best.
Couple of other tracks which get my vote are Shaking the Cage from Spin One (Full circle sample Disc) and the Man of Colours from the Video Cassette.
every thiing on top of the pops then was canned . i cant remember any one doing it live.. i remember bands saying they would not go on because they couldnt play live..part of the b..b.c machine.

Mate, this group writes and produces it's own music, this is a low quality video so you have to forgive for that, but Icehouse is a cut above the rest for quality.
