  • JPG = lossy

    PNG = Lossless

There you go.. Now google what lossy and lossless is

  • I was waiting for Doctor Octogonapus to appear

  • PNG's are great. Love the transparency and you can get the file size down quite a bit using the right tools, plus the image quality is great in png. Gif?.... haven't found a use for them since the old days of animated "under construction" pics lol.

  • @jnjoblon HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA EPIC!

  • i use .PNG for editing photo´s because if u use ".jpg" u got the shadows. But i use .jpg for forum because it loads faster.

  • Never heard it called a ping before! I just spell it out P-N-G or maybe call it puhng.

  • Peein' G!

  • hahaha jpg is still around and is the most popular file for photo's

  • i cant undertand what chris say :(

  • i like to eat apples and banoonoos

  • lol

  • thanks chris i am having a hard time using JPG i think i am going to switch now for why and what i want to do using my video programs.

  • I really wish there was another format that we could save images as. .jpg and .gif are great, if you want to upload it quickly, and have it downloaded quickly, but unfortunately, you sacrifice quality. Then you have .png, where you get awesome, un-compressed quality, but it comes with a price - it takes up more space. As a graphics artist, I generally prefer .png, just because the quality is better, but when uploading large images, I have to compromise, and save it as a high quality .jpg

  • I use JPEG primarily for screenshots since it is easier to control the size. PNG can vary from 100KB to several MB on the same sized image depending on the detail on screen.

For other images I also use JPEG as my camera outputs in low-compressed JPEG (about 2-3MB for each 6MP image).

  • How can png replace gif when it can't do animation?

Please don't tell me Flash it is relatively slow to gif and isn't as cross-platform.

  • It replaces .gif in the sense that it can do transparency. Thus you can use a transparent layer as the background. and just an unrelated FYI, Flash IS cross-platform.

  • I said Flash " isn't _as_ cross-platform."

  • I am a pixel artist so I use .png a lot.

  • I've used png more often but not sure y, glad you cleared that up for me

  • Very informative explanation.

  • PNG is the best format IMO.
