  • Man, you can find anything on YouTube these days XD

  • I'm a nail biter too, on a personal note I like finger picks versus growing my nails out, and i have personally broke a finger nail, and it AIN'T NO LAUGHING MATTER! IT HURTS LIKE HELL, but can't brake a metal finger pick, whis what i would rather play with anyway, everybody is different! Do what works for each person and the sound you are after

  • are you gay? seriously?

  • I can't do this, im a nurse, I need my nail cut short always

  • do not listen to this dude, those nail filer he show on the video will kill your nails! you need to get a meddle filer like cover girl or Revlon, and the buffer you need the micro buffer you can get it at "sally nails supplies".

  • The first nail shape he showed, is the best nail shape for classical players and you can also see the videos of William Kanengiser. He explains the best sahape in detailed...

  • i know guitar pics sound bad but i dont give a fuck its just too much work even if im a girl

  • i use the flesh of my finger tips _|_

  • helped a shit load !!! thanks and

  • very usefull !!!

i want to ask something. HOW can i make my fingernails stronger and tighter . i always brake them :S

    Note: I'm a beginner guitarist ;)

    Best wishes ,

    Stavros

  • damn man>><<these days you can find ANYYYTHING on youtube

  • Is the thumb nail shaped the same way as the other four fingers? Maybe excluding the A nail since you can shape that different from the rest...

  • thanks..very great information !!

  • The key to good solid nails is getting on a gelatin regimen. There is alot of speculation about whether gelatin works, but from my experience it works great. You can get capsules of gelatin in the vitamin aisle at most Wal-Marts.

  • so hard to get good playing nails and keep them!!!

I just get my nails long enough and one of them will break :(

  • fucking adds!

  • Im interested in this ping pong ball trick. anyone have any information on that?

  • thanks!

  • I looked this up because the song name: Dust In The Wind by Kansas.

  • people sound so ignorant , when then tell you to play with a pick

  • @duderock009 EXACTLY!!! this one kid was like "Whoa, how are you playing with your fingers?"

  • @duderock009 no, ppl sound so ignorant when then say to play with fingernails. there is nothing wrong with playing with a pick. you cant do this, but there are other things you can do with a pick that you cant do with your fingers. good guitarists should be able to play with both. of course i play my classical almost exclusively with my fingers though lol.

  • @ciano15 It's not that playing with a pick is wrong but then why watch a video on classical guitar? a classical guitarist would never use a pick (having a classical guitar does not instantly make a classical guitarist). This guy really knows his stuff, he used the word "preparation" which is an excellent classical guitar technique based on complete hand relaxation. Watch Recuerdos De La Alhambra and tell me if playing with your fingers is ignorance ;)

  • @justanotherdude22 you completely missed my point. playing with your fingers isnt ignorant. playing with a pick isnt ignorant. what i said was ignorant is when people try to say 1 is better than the other. usually its the classical guitar purists who look down on anyone who uses a pick, which is ignorant. to understand my comment better, read what duderock009 said in the top rated comments. That is a very ignorant statement.

  • @ciano15 say that i made an unprofessional statement , when i said , that people sound ignorant when they tell a classical to play with a pick. no i didnt try to say , that the fingers are better than the pick . i wanted to state , that people who dont know anything about classical guitar, tell a classical guitarist , who devoted some years of playing ( and maybe he got some prizes) to suddenly change his style because they have never seen any classical guitarist.

  • @duderock009 be more specific. telling a metal guitarist to use a pick isnt ignorance, but telling a classical guitarist to use a pick is.

  • @ciano15 thats what i meant . srry for my english im romanian

  • @ciano15 People look so ignorant when they play nylon strings with pick.

  • @Audiodemonz youre just another ignorant purist who refuses to accept that picks can be used on a classical guitar to get a unique tone. there is no purely right or wrong in music. im a classical guitarist and a percussionist. there is marimba music that calls for me to use the wooden end of a mallet. mallets werent designed to be used that way, but they are, because they give off a unique tone.... just like a guitar pick.

  • Comment removed

  • @artistssoftpastels thats not true at all. if that were the case, surely respected composers wouldnt notate a pick to be used on certain parts of pieces. Also, the pick was invented around the 1400s and was used on anything from lyres and lutes to the strings themselves of the harpsichord. There are no limitations on music, just the ones close-minded people choose to create. Using a pick on nylons strings cant possibly be worse for them than a flamenco player wailing with all 5 nails.

  • @artistssoftpastels I'm pretty sure nylon strings are designed for their sound not for finger only use. Like Ciano said using a pick with nylon strings gives off a unique sound that is nothing like using a pick with steel string.

  • @duderock009 HAHAAH!

    Guitar picks is for noobs.

  • @duderock009 Guys are so gay, when they have long nails.

  • As you put more and more effort into learning a musical instrument, you tend to get more focused on purity of sound.

Though you can play with just flesh, use finger picks, etc as you experiment, most people tend to enjoy the tone they can achieve using flesh with nail and it gives you a lot of tonal possibilities that other methods do not.

The fact that so many do take care of their nails, shows that perhaps the sacrifice of having "feminine" nails is worth it to achieve that perfect sound .

  • NOOO!!!! I accidentally filed my 'a' finger too short! :(

  • very useful, thank you!

  • wow i had no idea, the nails play such an important part

  • i do judo, and if i kept ma finger nails like that i wouldnt have any hails cause they would get ripped offf!! WTF CAN I DO??

  • @iNoScOpEdOBL use fake finger nails...dah...just don't let ur roomie see them cause he will think they're weird.

but it's okay if you are a girl.

  • @iNoScOpEdOBL let them fall off every time you break them . in this way they will harden and you 'll be able to have long ones . im a handball player and this method worked for me . or you need to drink alot of milk products or anything that contains calcium.

  • man just to play the classical guitar my nails need to be fuck up D:

  • LOL at 2:56 it sounded like he said Anal XDXD

  • Seriously, I do this, I'm not gay. In fact, I don't really care what haters say, I still feel proud about my sexuality.

  • F----U------C---K you haters of Classical guitar, i dont give a Sh!t about what you think

  • Well for some of you who doesn't understand it and are a bit immature, it could seem a bit "gay". But I also do this and it's because the shape of you nail and how they're cut, filed, polished etc. actually matters. If you don't understand this part it could be hard to understand this as well, and I actually don't blame you. But if you would like to understand I could put it this way; playing classical guitar with polished, and good cut nails is like going skieeing with newly waxed skies.

  • @Olimarification

    idiot.

  • I don't think gay..I think its uninformative and retarded......

  • @jdland100 dude your retarded learn something about classical guitar. you NEED nails to play it. douche

  • @ditman333 you dont NEED nails to play it douche ive been playing for 3 years i always pick off my nails and i play bouree perfectly fine 0.o sure its nice and maybe brighter but you dont NEEED nails.

  • @zztopicle42 yeah but you cant play harder songs, anything that requires tremolo picking or Virtuoso.

  • quick question, can you use nails for the bass

  • @thatmetalfan666 I would think that the thick strings would take a toll on fingernails just as regular guitar strings do.

  • gay

  • @Discipol fuck you. Do you play guitar even?

  • @lt4eyes yes. his haircut, the pink wrapper, talking like a mackeup expert reminds me of gayness. not that there is anything wrong with being gay. but this would be an example of it.

  • @lt4eyes yes. his haircut, the pink wrapper, talking like a makeup expert reminds me of gayness. not that there is anything wrong with being gay. but this would be an example of it.

  • Thanks much. I never understood why I got this awful noise when using my nails. I never realized the shape affected it 00

  • A new player question here. Can you really play well with "fake" nails? I have all these horrible visions of them being so thick, vibrating weird, or just plain flying off.

Do you folks have favorite brands of nail hardener?

  • Anyone know where i can get a copy of that diagram he uses?

  • @Z3r0mt Memorize it. Favourite it on youtube. I also know the Aaron Shearer's books have diagrams.

  • @darkoanton5 thanks? i meant, "were can i get that specific diagram that he uses?" i like that one because its big and could be shown to a large classroom for example.

  • i play classical guitar too...but it hink this is no t gay ,,, but the guy doin the video obviously as gay....

  • The reason some people think that this is gay is just the blending of two different cultures. On one side, we have the typically uneducated ignorent sterotypes who have probably never heard classical guitar music, and certainly havent looked into it much. And the on the side we have those of us who are classical guitar players who have studied this for years and having nails is just second nature to us.

  • I never knew fingernails and theyre shape affected the guitar sound:o

  • AMAZING, how did the blues ever get started without you !

    You are a dumbass !!!

Come around my parts like that and you will probably get beat up !

  • bullshit, i've been playing classical guitar for 6 years, and i've never gave a shit about my nails and i'm doing just fine

  • For every one who is saying that such nails are gay. All good classical guitarists use their nails to get a good tone. Believe me, you will never get a really good tone without those nails. So please, stop saying that it's gay and stupid!

  • what a faggot

  • @saltgamer Your a faggot. Classical guitarists need nails to have a good tone.

  • @Patriot3332 well sorry buddy i dont know about that but i think anyone who watches this would think hes a bit of a queer

  • thanks for this

  • they'll look at you funny in the nail care section, and then they'll blow you after they see you play

  • You're a gay !

  • @MegaBRUTI Your gay. Classical guitarists need long nails to have good tone.

  • @MegaBRUTI you're an inbred fool

  • Comment removed

  • it works! didnt think it would but actually it does matter in which way you have your nails..

  • Damn, dude i bite my fingernails too much, this is gunna take some reconstitution of habits.

  • @drpeppa2357 for real dude i do the same haha

  • @drpeppa2357 I was thinking the same thing through out this entire video.

  • Wow, I glanced over all the comments and I didn't see this: The name of the fingers (nails) come from "Castellano" (Spanish) where the "P" (Thumb) stand for "Pulgar" [In castellano the thumb finger is called Pulgar] The "I" is similar to English and is "Indice" (Index); The "M" also is similar "Medio" (Middle). The "A" stand for "Anular" [Anular derive from "Anillo" (Ring) - which is the Ring finger]

The last finger (Pinkie) is called "Meñique" (also begin with "M")

  • stop saying "In the trade" as if you are in any way apart of it.

  • @KaslarProductions well your definetly not in the trade. its just an expression you shouldnt be an ass. but i checked your channel your just a noob with a fucked up video camera so go suck a dick faggot. :P and then kill your self when your done. this dude is on expert village so he is probably getting paid. which means he must have some kind of experience with professional music.

  • @Jonathontheone Oh no don't check my channel its not like thats what it is there for.... and who gives a fuck if I have a camera... I spend my money on shit I care about... I could care less if I made videos or not.. I make music not film....

and expert village is anything except experts... and if you've seen any other one of there videos you would know that..... Naruto ninja faggot

  • @KaslarProductions what the fuck is naruto??? i play guitar, piano, and violin.. so i make music too. suck my dick. fag.

  • -.- "tha nail" -.-

  • you should shape fingernails the same way for accoustic guitar aswell?

  • @Tadej37 Acoustic guitar is any guitar who's sound is not put through an amp. However, growing out your nails is not necessary for fingerstyle or classical guitar styles. Without nails the tone is extremely weak and you can't do certain techniques such as a tremolo. A good fingerstyle guitarist who doesn't have nails is Adam Rafferty, compare him to someone like Ulli Boegerhausen who uses nails and plays in a more classical style.

  • @tman916x ty :) first i tried playing with my nails without shaping them anyhow. And i was also creating some scraching sound ( or how to describe it ). Then i tried to shape them like this and i find it much better :)

  • @Tadej37 Same here man. It's a never ending battle especially when I file em too short then it's like "Ah FML!"

  • 2:55... XD He said ANAIL!!! :D

  • gay :D

  • @rafikimetalperu Oh really? Guess you have to stick with your guitar hero game instead then..

  • @rafikimetalperu It is not gay. Grow up.

  • Good tone comes from a decent guitar and player, not from how well you clean your fingernails, faggot

  • @0ldSandwich Your retarded, you need nails to play some types of guitar. Get your shit straight

  • @0ldSandwich You're stupid. Go watch Spongebob.

  • just use the finger picks, screw the nails :D

  • @reebokbl The idea is to use your fingers when playing classical guitar- no picks :P

  • @reebokbl finger picks sound gross

  • I've played classical guitar for 4 years, and I've never heard of this before :S Can someone give me a little extra info about this? Haha it might give me more motivation not to bite my nails :P

  • WTF! Some people are too immature calling this gay. CLASSICAL guitar is about good sound. good nails give a great sound. And noo, picks are not the same, they sound like pure plastic when you play it on the classical guitar. If you call this fake, fuck you. I use nail protein and I file my nails every week and many of my class mates do as well. If you call that gay, you have some orientation problems.

  • @xavyz06 no no no, we call it gay, because he mentions stuff like nail polish, beauty stores, and loads of feminine things that really put us "straight" people off. i clicked onthis vid to get an idea of a suitable nail shape when playing classical guitar.

  • @xavyz06 gay

  • @xavyz06 wait nail protein? u confused me when u said that u sound like u eat ur nails no offense

  • @xavyz06 if you dont mind me asking, i thought that it was only the SHAPE which is important. why would most guitarists polish them up? would it help in any ways? because if they do, hell yeah i'm gonna start polishing!

  • @rhonin93 It does help. My nails are stronger and they don't break so i can do other stuff(like play basketball). Plus, it is good for you when you practice rasgueado. If you have strong nails, you don't need nail polish. But I use it b/c i play a lot of rasgueado. You should definitely use some if you play flamenco.

  • @xavyz06 sure thing. i LOVE rasguado a lot! however, i still don't see the vitality of polished nails, as how most guitarists polish their nails till they shine like diamond. @@

  • @xavyz06 cool where can i find something like this , i mean nail protein , i never heard of this before

  • you would like fake fingernails, wouln't you.... ya gay.

  • i do fingerpicking without nails, sif need them

  • lol never really shaped my nails. i always played and in time my nails would shape them self's, and weird to see how all my nails are in the good zone lol

  • FTW?

  • @felixcruzazul

maybe you should learn how to spell guitarist before criticizing you dumb fuck

  • i want to be a guitarest not a fag -.-

  • @felixcruzazul hey dumbass, you will NEVER be a CLASSICAL guitarist if you don't have the right nails because they are what you play with. Why don't you learn more about classical guitar playing before calling people fags.

  • wtf no offense but even that doesnt help just use a pick.... ur nails looks pretty nad too

  • @maxtina7 it's not the same

  • @maxtina7 No offense but you are a dumbass. Classical Guitarists fingerpick. Try fingerpicking with a pick and tell me how that goes.

  • The maturity of these comments are astounding. I'm reminded why I never scroll down past the comment box again.

Great video, upon looking at my nails, they definitely could use more work. One things for sure, they're hard as a rock. I can literally snap two against each other with out them breaking and that's without any help!

  • WTF Dude.. Just grab a gypsy guitar and play with the same hand u use on ur girl.

  • GAY

  • @gretschwf It is not gay. If you want to be a serious Classical guitarist you must have nails. Nails give a great tone. The tone of the flesh if flat and lifeless.

  • GAY

  • This is a very superficial explanation of nail shaping, and doesnt account for variations in the depth of curvature, which has a significant effect on the shape viewed from overhead, which is what he discusses in this video.

Personally, it took me two years of FRUSTRATION, experimentation, and patience (did I mention frustration) to find the correct shapes, but more importantly to understand the thinking behind the correct shaping process.

  • I cant see anything but the subtitles????

  • Upon further research, it seems that Tarrega was somewhat of an innovator when it came to the nail method; however, not in the "plectrum" sense. 1/32" passed the tip of the finger. That being said, the finger tip method, according to this essay, which I am not listing because I fear you-tube might block me like it did with the last message I typed(and lost),<--hows that for a run-on?

  • @Tarclasp predates the plectrum method...sorry bout the spelling and grammar.

  • Oo polished fingernails? ... Gay-o-Meter: Legend of Zelda

  • @TheSorrowness Are you saying LoZ is gay?!!

  • @kittymation Yes. Exactly. Totally. GAY.

  • I'm don't know if this is meant to be serious or not. And now I'm freaked out.

    o.O

  • As an ex-nail biter, I can't go through the commitment of growing the nails on my right hand, as I'll definitely bite them... tho I REALLY want to learn classical guitar...

I was hoping I could glue on some temp ones.. but that seems to be in that 'poor' category of nail shapes. Guess I'm stuck w/ a pick.

    ToT OOoh the humanity!!!

  • @KickyFut If you play with the nail, you'll really feel the difference. The vibration, the feel, the sound of it is much smoother. I'm a nail biter myself. So when I'm about to bite my right hand fingers, i just bite my left hand fingers instead :D

  • i like classical guitar. it sounds very soothing. i wonder what you have to do to be able to play it. what? polishing nails? GAAAAAAY.

  • @LogicalPhallusy This dude is an idiot as most expert village 'teachers' are, current wisdom is to not even use nails at all.

  • @Nisp: Nails (or clip-ons) are absolutely instrumental (pun intended) in producing the correct tone on a classical guitar. It's called "Classical guitar" for a reason dude; its not based on current wisdom, it's structured around conventional wisdom.

  • @Tarclasp You make a good point, however I have heard of professional classical guitars/composers using fingertips, one of Tarregas students Pujol said, "the flesh best transmit the feeling of the soul...such an unresponsive medium as nails interferes, somehow with the direct contact of the artist's sensibility to the string."

I happen to be from the school of thought of forget what everyone else does and do what works for you. (although admittedly classical guitar is the polar opposite)

  • @Nisp2 ok glad to clarify. I absolutely agree with you, although I am currently attempting to quit biting my nails in order to try out the nail method. I find nails less clumbsy and quite faster. According to one source I stumbled across( which unfortunately escapes me presently) Tarrega did prefer the flesh of the finger over the nail..fascinating, although not uncommon as a lot of outstanding musicians seem to disregard conventions in that manner. good to talk with you

  • @Tarclasp Im a nail biter as well maybe that accounts for my style lol, I do want to experiment with nails for tremolo as well though it would be faster I assume, in my opinion nails cause lots more attack than fingertips as well. Great to hear about Tarrega I actually didnt know that thanks for the info! good to talk with you too, cheers.

  • Thank you - very helpful video. My teacher had to shape my nails for me until I understood what he was trying to explain to me. It's counter-intuitive as your fingers are curled under ; you're actually hitting on the opposite side of your nail from where you'd think you'd be hitting (left, not right). Your graphic would have really helped me to understand when I was just starting out.

That said, I have (pro salon) nail tips placed on the P I M A fingers only - I then shape them myself.

  • lol screw that im not putting fake nails.

  • Chinga tu madre tu y tu puto video jajaja

  • it think i saw that guys hand on an iphone commercial

  • lmao!!! your "A" nail

  • Since I am left handed and just learning, would I shape my nails the opposite you have shown or would the same work since it's all opposite anyways?

  • @TheMarionetteZombie Yes, if your guitar is restrung left-handed, and your playing it completely left-handed you would reverse everything. You would be filing the RIGHT side of the nails instead of the left. (just hold a mirror up and watch the video, lol ;)

  • he must be a hand model

  • my family thought i'm gay cuz i bought fake finger nails-_-

  • press on nails.. never heard of that rofl.. my nails always break but ill just use my fingers, thanks.

  • he is gay

  • this is a how to be a trasvestite tutorial

  • @nickspoons thats what it is for sure!!!!

  • Ahhhhh comon you dont need a freeking fingernail file

    - just buy a pick!

  • @TheB0DIN you clearly dont play classical guitar then?

  • @TheB0DIN Try to play Recuerdos De La Alhambra with a pick and see what happens. Or any Classical piece for that matter.

  • @zacrichey ofc i meant a finger pick!

you know when you have a pick on each finger...

  • @TheB0DIN Haha ohh, Yea, i play better with my nails, but finger picks arent bad tho, i like them when i play banjo :D

  • omfg this guy is just gay

  • @liverpoolfugl isnt everyone from expertvillage gay?

  • anail :D

  • @schoarama87 LOL i noticed that exact same thing, very funny!!

  • This is so funny, I started playing with finger nails this year and my wife is absoultly jealous. By the way, I love plying guitar with fingernails, I will never for back to flesh only. The better tone and volume is worth the trouble. I polish them with Sally Hanson 4 in 1. This in it self is a mirical consdering that I am in my forties and have been bitting and picking my nails all my life! If you play fingerstye guitar you owe ti to your self to at least try this technique!

  • wow....u have a very pretty nail by the way! do u have to do the same pattern for every single nail? great lesson!!!

  • lol omg he looks like that computer nerd from deadliest warriors

  • Just go buy a pick.That's easy.

  • @NikkoBellic100 Yeah, But Playing With Your Nails Is Like Playing With 5 Guitar Picks!!! With A Pick, You Can Only Pick One String At A Time!!! With You Finger Nails, You Can Pick Five At A Time!!!

  • why is everyone getting freaked out about this? they're just nails man it's not like he's painting them pink and shit. it's like having five picks instead of one.

  • @heyidkwhatever hahaha 50 million thumbs up :))) *with nicely filed nails of course

  • @heyidkwhatever Man if you want to play classic guitar It´s important.Only modified toenail can create crisp sound quality

  • @ignorancexmusic Its Classical, not classic

  • @Patriot3332 yeah i dont speak english very well
