    2. No Country For Old Men

    3. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

  • 2007 sort of fell out for me as a cinematic year.

  • 1.The Assasination of Jesse James

2.Before The Devil KNows Your Dead

    3.Atonement

  • Three of my favorite movies of that year (No Country, American Gangster and Zodiac) were on Roeper's list and three (There Will Be Blood, I'm Not There and Sweeney Todd) made Scott's list.

    Mine that year:

    1. There Will Be Blood; 2. Sweeney Todd; 3. Grindhouse; 4. No Country for Old Men; 5. Lust, Caution; 6. I'm Not There.; 7. Atonement; 8. Zodiac; 9. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly; 10. American Gangster

  • WOW, now that someone so hip as Roger Ebert tells me which old films to watch, I'm going to pee in my panties with excitement!

  • 10. Atonement

    9. Hot Fuzz

    8. I'm Not There

  • "Hot Fuzz" was definitely my favourite of 2007

  • I Havent seen any of these movies

  • One of the better years in the past decade for filmzz

  • 7. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

    6. Knocked Up

    5. Sweeney Todd

    4. Ratatouille

    3. Zodiac

    2. There Will be Blood

    1. No Country for Old Men

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Is what the list should have been

  • no country for old men BLOWS GOATS

  • Now that enough time has passed, There Will Be Blood remains at least the standout of 2007, if not for the whole decade. I think at least Roeper would agree to that now.

  • No Country for Old Men & Ratatouille FTW, friendo

  • I hate A.O scott he didn't like zombieland

  • how did 3:10 to Yuma not make either? :(

  • MICHAEL CLAYTON and NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN are two of the best movies ever made. I liked Michael Clayton better but No Country was amazing too.

  • I always forget American Gangster exists, lol. I know I saw it when it came out, and I have a vague recollection of it being a fairly well-crafted film, but I swear...it always slips out of my mind. It's odd.

  • NO TRANSFORMERS!?!?!?

  • @TF2Fan101 You need to see some better movies.

  • @nickjudt You need to stop judging others based on what they like.

  • @TF2Fan101 Well, that statement is just ridiculous. I'm not judging you as a person! But if you think Transformers is better than any of these films, you might have to see more movies in order to know more.

Everyone can have an opinion. It's when you begin to try to back that opinion up with evidence that you can be proven wrong. There is simply no argument that Transformers is better than any of these movies.

Check out this book's intro on google books. The Great Movies 3, by Roger Ebert

  • @nickjudt Sorry about that.

  • @nickjudt I was trying to make a snappy comeback, but failed.

  • @TF2Fan101 It's okay. Sorry if I was a little forceful. I just feel passionate about this.

  • @nickjudt sexually?hahaha i just breakin balls

  • juno was fucking hhorrible

  • Why is Transformers not on the list!!!!!

  • @lordtufty You need to see some better movies.

  • @nickjudt You need to get a sense of humour

  • How come they didn't have any of the same movies on their list? Was that just coincidence?

  • Matthew apparently lacks insight and has no idea what an allegorical narrative is (No Country for Old Men) and apparently doesn't realize that Once wasn't about the music as much as the relationship between the two stars that drives the film. Stupid people everywhere you turn. ( yes, im an asshole, but one that doesn't take everything at face value)..

  • no movie made both?

  • Scotts picks were far better. No country for old men was marginal at best and once was awful because it was more of a hour long music video than anything else no substance. 12:08 east of bucharest was outstanding.

  • No Country for Old Men is as close to a perfect movie as I have seen yet. Not my all-time favorite, but you gotta admit it never misses a beat. If they should ever rewrite the Bible, it should be the gospel according to Cormac McCarthy. The film adaptation will obviously go to the Coens.

  • Thank god. A critic liked Superbad.

  • @lethalstingfilms How about lots of critics. Superbad was a critical success.

  • Where's There Will Be Blood...it's a top 5 in the decade

  • @DeezleProductions42 It was on the second guy's list at #7

  • i let one rip. and i think the reason i cant move is because somethin snuck out the back door if you know what im sayin... Thanks for listening

  • Zodiac HANDS DOWN!!!!

That Paris jt t'aime was a little disappointing. I bought that for my lady for Valentines or something and the stories are just too short and just when you get involved it's over. it's too long as well. I only really liked the one with the black guy who gets stabbed. No country was dope but requires more than one viewing to get in everything. Sweeney Todd is the worst. I HATED that movie like racism!!!.

  • Thanks Mr Scott for having "into the wild" in your list, though 8 is too low if you ask me

  • american gangster should be #1

  • my top 10

...FUCK who am I kidding, No Country For Old Men blew every other film outta da water.

    Fuckin Frenchies lol

  • 1. Paris, je t'aime 2. No Country for Old Men 3. There Will Be Blood 4. 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days 5. La Vie en Rose 6. Persepolis 7. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly 8. Into the Wild 9. Sweeney Todd 10. Eastern Promises Good year for French Cinema.

    5. Michael Clayton

  • Comment removed

  • these guys suck..they both snubbed there will be blood...michael clayton as best of the year?wtf

  • one of them did pick TWBB, dude. pay attention.

  • Hey, I don't like Juno either, but its a damn good, and original film. Its much better then half the action and comedy movies of today.

  • hate to say it but your one of the only ones who thinks so. i agree with because you said so however in full

  • A.O. Scott's top one is fantastic. 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days won the maximun prize at the Cannes festival.

  • how could he put juno on there

  • My Top 5 of 2007:

    1. Juno

    2. Across The Universe

    3. There Will Be Blood

    4. No Country For Old Men

    5. Michael Clayton

  • michael clayton was SOOOOO confusing!!!

  • 1. No Country for Old Men

    2. There Will Be Blood

    3. Into the Wild

    4. 3:10 to Yuma

    5. Atonement

    6. Zodiac

    7. The Savages

    8. I'm Not There

    9. Juno

    10. The Bourne Ultimatum

  • I really agree with you here. You've chosen great films.

  • Gone Baby Gone, Juno, American Gangster, The Lookout (!!!) rated higher than Zodiac? WTF?

  • Yeah, Scott's seems a bit more true to the general critic's opinions.

  • Superbad better than There Will Be Blood? What the hell happened to us. We can't blame the sixties for everything. We're becoming increasing base.

  • my top 10 10. 3:10 to Yuma 9. Superbad 8. Planet Terror(although grindhouse was a double feature, i count this as one movie cuz death proof was suckish) 7. Sweeney Todd 6. Knocked Up 5. 300 4. Juno 3. Ratatoulle 2. No Country for Old Men 1. Into the Wild
  • grindhouse should be on there if you saw it in the cinema it was epic it was more like an event 2 movies, tonnes of fake trailers and the audience would actually cheer on.

the m most fun you could have at the cinema in years.

now as standalone movies their nothing epic lol

but if you saw them in the cinema you will know what i mean

  • Well, I only liked Planet Terror, I hated Death Proof.

  • 4 months 3 weeks and 2 days is really good unless you don't like subtitles...but I wouldn't necessarily call it the best.

  • Man those lists were awful.

  • I love superbad, it is sooooo funny.

No country for old men is also very good.

  • I like Roeper a lot, but one real weakness of him is that he's a sucker for weak films that just happen to spout a liberal ideology. I've seen him praise films such as Michael Clayton and Life of Gale when, in reality, they had better messages than actual films.

  • 1. No Country for Old Men

    2. There Will be Blood

    3. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead

    4. 28 Weeks Later

    5. Zodiac

    6. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

    7. Gone Baby Gone

    8. Knocked Up

    9. Michael Clayton

    10. Funny Games

  • 1 There Will Be Blood

    2 The Lives Of Others

3 No Country For Old Men

    4 Atonement

5 The Diving Bell And The Butterfly

6 The Assassination Of Jesse James

    7 Sicko

8 Taxi To The Dark Side

    9 The Bourne Ultimatum

    10 The Savages

  • American Gangster and Super Bad over There Will Be Blood and Atonement? He's right though, 2007 was the best year for films in a long time.

  • Comment removed

  • I don't think 07 was good til fall movie season, i think 08 was the best in a long time.

  • I agree with 08 being a better year for movies. How do you think 09 is doing? So far the best movie I've seen this year is Up.

  • Yeah Up is my fav movie of the year so far. I also liked Watchmen, Star Trek, and Funny People. I want to see The Hurt Locker(I hear it's amazing) but really 2009 hasn't been that good of a year for movies. Hopefully it'll get better once the fall season rolls in.

  • Up was bad. the best of the year was inglourious basterds and ponyo

  • Comment removed

  • death proof sucked

  • My personal* faves (*"personal" indicating that my list is based more on my enjoyment of each film, more than they are on what is technically a "good" film): 10. Appleseed Ex Machina 9. Juno 8. Michael Clayton 7. Grindhouse 6. Superbad 5. The Bourne Ultimatum 4. Ratatouille 3. American Gangster 2. Knocked Up 1. 300 I'm a comicbook nerd, therefore, I tend to favor films based toward this genre.
  • 300, very good taste.

  • Across the Universe

    Atonement

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

    Juno

    No Country for Old Men

    Persepolis

    There Will Be Blood

    La Tourneuse des Pages

    La Vie en Rose

The Wind that Shakes the Barley

  • Here's my list for the best films of 2007 (a great year for movies): 1. There Will be Blood 2. Ratatouille 3. No Country for Old Men 4. The Lives of Others 5. Sicko 6. Before the Devil Knows You're Dead 7. Juno 8. 3: 10 to Yuma 9. Away From Her 10. American Gangster Honorable mention: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
  • THERE WILL BE BLOOD was the best movie of that year. these idiots rate ratatouille, i'm not there, american gangster and michael clayton above there will be blood?! i think siskel would've recognized this movie's greatness.

  • I agree with you, although I still would have rated Michael Clayton at 1, and There Will Be Blood at 2.

  • Are they not allowed to have the same movies on their lists?

  • No 3:10 to Yuma ?

    Great list though.

  • man 2007 was a good year for movies/ video games

  • Antisemite

  • no, just them

  • Michael Clayton wasn't bad but the last 5 minutes and where Clooney tells Swinton "you're fucked, you are so fucked" is the the whole climax.

  • Did anyone like the ending of No Country for Old Men? I don't :( get the title? Please tell me how Brolin was caught?

  • Well first of all I don't think the movie caught the power of the novel by Cormac McCarthy. I thought it was pretty bad.

When Brolin was talking to that girl. Or a bit after that when he was in his room.

  • 1. Ass. of Jesse James by Rob. Ford (stupid title though)

    2. Michael Clayton

    3. Gone Baby Gone

    4. There will be blood

    5. Juno

    6. Into the Wild

    7. Ratotouille (personal love but bad voice actors)

    8. Before the Devil knows your dead(ridiculous amount of nudity though complete ruined it)

    9. Eastern Promises.

  • where's GRINDHOUSE that was by far the best and probably the most origional

  • Grindhouse is retarded!! and your gay for not liking superbad ashesfrombones

  • Eh, where is Ebert?

  • I nvr agreed with Roeper, the most unstimulating movies were his favs - hez such a dry bark

  • Michael Clayton was pretty good....

  • ...Wheres "There Will Be Blood" ?!?

HOw can you not place that among the best of the year?

  • It was on there, you must have missed it.

  • who cares what they think i think it poeple chose on the best 2007 in this case it was transformer

  • No Country For Old Men had no point.

Gone Baby Gone was pretty good.

  • Thats the point! XD

  • one or the other didnt have no country for old men, or there will be blood...i believes that discredits them

  • No it doesn't. Neither of those two movies would make my top ten and it is stupid why you should think that just because they don't put it on some stupid list automatically means that they didn't like them, dumbass.

  • @Mrbillybadass Dude, Roeper had both of them, and A.O had TWBB. Derp.

  • Didn't see too many movies in '07 (still wanna see American Gangster, Zodiac, and Once) but here are my top ten: 10. Knocked Up 9. Breach 8. Hot Fuzz 7. Superbad 6. Juno 5. Sicko 4. Sweeney Todd 3. Michael Clayton 2. There Will Be Blood 1. No Country For Old Men
  • but alot of the movies werent worth some of the spots they got on the top 10 list... alot of them did..

    2007 was an awesome year

  • i wouldnt of picked Michael Clayton as number 1, but it would def be in my top 4

  • It's true. 2007 was a powerhouse of good movies.

  • LOL my #1 is Sweeney Todd...

charming characters, dark tim burton-like atmosphere, and a mature love story that is so silly and serious at the same time...

  • heh heh, oh yeah! It's my number 1 tied with Juno.

  • I think Michael Clayton deserves #1 - it is absolutely brilliant.

  • Wow, Roeper wtf! No TWBB? Atonement? Rata? I'll give props for acknowledging Zodiac at least

  • There Will Be Blood---the best of the year! close second goes to Zodiac.

  • Clayton was strong, Blood still wont leave me after months

  • Sweeney Todd over TWBB? Are you kidding me?

  • Notice how different the 2 top ten lists are!

The studios are paying them to give good reviews.

  • You could say that, however, most of these movies are indie, or, otherwise haven't one well at the box office. In spite of these great reviews people go see Shrek 3 or Transformers -not Sweeny Todd or Zodiac.

  • @thirdworldwar I think I payed Sweeney Todd it's budget back cuz I saw it nine times in the theater!

  • Richard Roeper usually makes good top ten lists. This years list is very good, but he should've put "No Country for Old Men" at #1.
