He came to Minnesota when I was 12 and my parents wouldn't let me go even though I was infatuated with the man. Obviously... I'll never have the same opportunity again. I owe so much to David Bowie!
@ElvisLivesUpstairs Actually, I would think it would be a way to kind of say, "Hey, I'm not the only teenage fan of David Bowie out there." In case you didn't realize, this is the 70's-- it wasn't exactly yesterday. It can be uncomfortable to be the only person your age to like someone like Bowie. So yes, even if you don't care, other people do.
i got a wallpaper where he is holding a cigarette with that haircut.all t time i watch it this song cames to my mind.the album version sounds poor but this one sounds trully powerfull.
Some of these lyrics haunt me , i.e '' On the street where you live I could not hold up my head, for I gave all I had in another bed, on another floor , in the back of a car, in a cellar like a church with the door ajar. That was my youth anyway !
@LOW1711 read Orwell's 1984 , its about Winston and Julia. I am reading the book again. Bowie originally wanted to make the musical "1984" but it he couldn't get the rights. Anyway, these lyrics remind me of the book.
it's not bad, but I've heard much better live versions from him. I feel that his best live work was from around 2002-2004 during the Reality tour but his live version of My death with Mike Garson for some awards show, I can't remember the name of it, was pretty awesome too! It's on here if you guys want to check that out as well.
@gorillabelly1 Oh, no, don't say that it were like that usually! You do not do him justice! There were lots and lots of brillant live performances by The Man, maybe this one isn't that good. I don't know at the moment, only reading comments and having no sound on my PC ;-). Search Youtube for his live performances especially between 1995 and 2004 -absolutely great!
The change from Ziggy to this was a shock for most of the Bowie fans when this came out. I was one of them, but what a change. As Bowie said, the most predictable thing about me is my unpredictability.
from 73 to 84 bowie was the king of music and thats really impresive. u can watch the billboards on that time and u going to see that he got their albums there in high positions. diamond dogs is far one of the best rock albums ever
my older twin sister's took me and my best friend to the "diamond dogs tour" at the "boston garden" in july *74,i was one very happy 15 yr.old girl!!!!
ahhhhhh! i'm so jealous!!! no doubt you were happy!!!!! I wasn't even born till 83 but i would give anything to have been able to see this tour!!! Long live king David!!!!
I think this must be one of my favorite Bowie songs. Maybe the best at the moment. Love it. It's so much passionm, and I like the different parts of it; Sweet thihg/Candidate/Sweet thing. Brilliant!
Awesome song! based on the 1984 imagery - it fits the rest of the album (1984/Rebel Rebel). Great decadence and imagery of the "Future Legend" world. Post apocalypic, of course. Classic Bowie.
David Robert Haywood Jones I'm only a thin white woman and I was thursday's child But I know there's something in the wind Let me fly away with you Waiting so long, I've been waiting so long Come to my waiting arms Give me more than one caress, satisfy this hungriness Share my life Fall in love with me How I wish you would With your kiss my life begins.
on the albun version he sings that line with such strenght and passion. That is slightly missing in this live version sadly. But still a great performance.
P.S im a 16 yr old fan. Im a self made fan. I studied Bowies work for a music project and became a huge fan.
You picked a great subject young man. David Bowie is a one of kind and between 1972 - 1975 he owned the world of rock music. No one could touch him ....
@PeleH20 You got to do Bowie for a music project? Lucky you. I discovered him through Joan Jett, The Runaways, you know, Cherie's influences. And not the movie. He's now my favourite musician ever. Cheers to teenage fans.
@Vernunft84 well 11 people didnt seem to have a problem when they liked my comment... And I think its important to highlight the fact that Bowie is still hugely relevant to todays youth. So how about you find something better to comment on other than the fact I mentioned my age?
this song got voted in the 'top ten best bowie songs' spanning his career. It's a real unsung gem of a tune. I would however, have loved if mick ronson had played on it, he would have done amazing things with it..he would have made it burn...
So true in respect to it being an unsung gem of a song. I think Diamond Dogs is a very overlooked album. Dispensing with Ronson was necessary I think for the progression Bowie wanted. I love Diamond Dogs as a stepping stone between rock and the "plastic soul" which proceeded it. BOWIE!!
I think Bowie was referring to illicit sex and homosexuality as a means for someone to stand his ground and even act out against the encroaching tyranny of the Orwellian world envisioned in the Diamond Dogs album.
Thirty-some years later, in an era much more socially conservative than the 70's, this could be easily lost in translation.
these pics come from the documentary called 'Cracked Actor'. When the guy who directed the movie 'The Man Who Fell to Earth' saw this documentary on TV, he immediately wanted to cast Bowie as the main character in the above movie. I forget the chaps name..sorry. I also forget name of Bowies character in thus film?, anyway it was as a result of the docum. featured in this clip that bowie were in the film the man who fell to earth.

My take on it is that this is about the "meat market" cruising scene. An endless cycle of hookups with the only meaning in the moment.
