I don't think anyone in politics has disappointed us more than Peter Garrett. He was our man, the one we all looked up to, the one who held his head high and defended us against the powers that be... now he's gone, to the dark side. Never was any irony more bitter.
The one environmental activist in living memory that has become part of government and in a position to actually change something. He's forgotten everything.
Can you imagine Zack Delarocha (RATM) getting into Congress, wearing a suit and doing nothing?
We are a hard bunch to piss off, we let a lot of things slide because at the end of the day we really dont give a shit. "We" meaning Aussies in general.

I think Peter Garret really is trying to do something positive with his time in Parliament. That's why the government basically ignores him. I think he thought he could do some good, then when he got there he quickly realized the house is full of foxes and wolves. From then on he's only put his head down and tried to quietly do something worthwhile with whatever they're willing to give him.
@Keruaran That is absolutely true. Those who claim he is a sellout don't appreciate his position. He realised he could get more of his ideals into reality, albeit through compromise in a major political party, than he could ever do as an activist or small-time politician. Just cause you can't see it, doesn't mean he doesn't stand for the same grand designs. Good on ya Peter!
@Keruaran - He should have known that beforehand, surely. He's a smart guy, he must have known what he was in for. I think he was promised much more than what was delivered. He should have known that. Bring back the Nuclear Disarmament Party.
PC thugs of the world should really listen to this.
It is they, the brainwashed "purified" ones, who really need to understand that shit has been happening in this world a long time before "Ga Ga" or "Oklabama".
Good on ya poona83 same old line... spin the other one... !! think about it a bit more. of course greed wouldn't have anything to do with it, nor corruption or bias - oh wait thats you! lol

I remember seeing them play this on there ADVANCE AUSTRALIA WHERE tour, amongst others, the best place to see them was at the ANTLER. Was not considered safe for a westie boy to head north...... we tended to stand out a little.
Hey Aussies, lighten up! I woulda loved it if John Kay had gotten into congress, wouldn't be any business as usual ...or how about if Strummer had taken a seat in parliment.
@Roddykay I think you mean "almost 30 years ago," but I agree. We don't remember anything. Earth Day started 40 years ago after an oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara, CA. Things were supposed to change and yet now we have BP in the Gulf. . .
Lets not get carried away with this guys influence in a boots and all political party. He has decided to get in a position to actually influence policy, give him a bit of credit. There has never been a Green policy put into practice, reality is sometimes difficult

Just a message of thanks for posting this. I've just shown this to my sons to help them understand why we stop to remember them today. They were awestruck.
Btw, a great montage.

Putting aside the politics in this song for a moment, it's an awesome track. Old Oils used to rock hard.

@Thurbane316 How can you put the politics aside? Midnight Oil was all about the politics.

@Roddykay we would want anything to change, would we? Same ol' same ol'. The predictability of idiocy. Pretty boring and sad actually.

1982 Peter Garret denunces American military interference and imperialist repression.
2010 Peter Garret supports American military interference and imperialist repression.
I like 1982 Peter Garret better.
