Despite all of their advanced technology, it's clear in the movie that humans kind of feel like the aliens are stupid or at least that this batch of this alien species are stupid or represent a worker or follower class. Wilkus probably felt secure that these aliens were pretty technologically harmless. Plus, in the movie, most of the other alien technology only responds to aliens.

I don't that it was a fuel but rather a nano-machine liquid that was needed to power up the command pod (the ship still had power as it started as soon as the button was pressed -like turning the key in a car). When the nano-liquid infected Wikus it realised that he wasn't alien and tried to 'fix' him.
