  • to PHYSICSBUGGA: Ever heard of SCBA? This Fire Department might not have the budget for foam, as you say, but I bet that piece of fire apparatus has BREATHING APPARATUS on it. Don't call them "retards", just call them stupid and ignorant to the job that needs to be done....SAFELY.....

  • ALWAYS ALWAYS WE MUST USE SCBA - BUT WHERE IS THE CREW-CHIEF ? HE MUST CARE THE FF.

  • my dad works in a steel mill, hes told me all about burning open wet ladels

  • R all u guys really tht stupid? The truck isnt still running. Tue camera is on the firetruck and the FIRE TRUCK is running. Lol. Still ford wins.

  • Steering column ftw!

  • Must be a Ford.

  • Americans are not a very smart people. It's not just their firefighters.

  • you people making crap about fire fighters should probably notice how he didnt really freak out or anything, this is common.

  • Its a ford, stays running evenn on fire.

  • this has happened way too many times for our department, it happened to me twice putting out a vehicle fire. we finally got the foam from the state, were a volunteer station in PA

  • I agree, there are plenty of nasty hydrocarbons in a vehicle fire. Don that air pak, it only takes a moment, and as we see in retrospect, that flash hood just might mean saving your face and ears. He should have kept a greater distance rather than leaning in after the first flash! There are plenty of AlMg alloys used in engines and transmissions today. And don't forget your runoff water in case fuel starts to leak from those plastic fuel tanks!!

  • no BA??? idiot

  • all firefighters know that you NEVER fight a car fire without a air pack for that reason

  • really brightttttt

  • If you are wearing pull gear and an airpak ( as you should ), magnesium expolsions are a very fun thing to witness.

  • really bad for eyes

  • Putting out a fire this way would speed up the rate of reaction of the magnesium to fully react, and therefore put out the fire, yes it would take a while lol.

  • NFPA you people! Look! Im an Captain in the third largest fire dept in the nation. Yes this is the way that most car fire are put out. But!!!! when entering the passanger compartment. Water should not be foscused in the area around the steering columb. Most newer cars have magnesium steering columbs and will explode. This guy is wrong for not wareing his SCBA and NFPA approved hood. ( CRAZY ) Firemen don't have the proper equipment due to city and poicitians. But not being safe (unexceptable)

  • @htownfire Cap, I am a retired engine captain myself. What fire department are you in that is the 3rd largest in the nation? Just curious.

  • @htownfire I'd be a little worried if you were really a captain in the 3rd largest fire dept in the nation. You write like a 10 year old.

  • @htownfire hurdur

  • Thumbs up if u think Harry Potter uses magnesium c!

  • North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) says that? Wow that's a new one lol. Sounds more like a NFPA requirement to me.

  • is en fake der mann erschreckt sich net mal

  • Glad he's alright

  • retards

  • Holy-Terrorist:>*=* Mg + 2xH2O = Mg(OH)2 + H2

This reaction have big light and ultraviolet light !

  • Never heard about putting out Mg with water friend. If I remember correctly, Mg cannot only be extinguished by water, but it creates Hydrogen gas and a violent super heated reaction. They use it for welding underwater for this reason.

If that firefighter was not in protective clothing he would have been burned severely, so playing with burning Mg is not a good idea if you like your good looks!

  • I worked at Meridian Magnesium. The #1 Producer of Magnesium parts. And we had at least 2 fires per day. Most of em are controlled fires. They are inevitable. Little known fact.,, Magnesium fires CAN be put out with water. The downdraft tables that u file and grind parts on are filled with water so if the dust catches fire u can sweep the fire into the water

  • who cares about foam or metal x that you need for magnesium where the hell is his scba that magnesium will burn your face right off...

  • god damn that takes some balls, just standing there like nothing happened.

  • dang he just walked away from it like it was nothing lol pro

  • LOL that was cool

  • so he stood there just spraying water at a never ending fire for about 50 seconds... wow

  • @43FIRERESCUE43 good call, that lack of scba could have given him a critical burn , always wear your scba on car fires, its being lazy if you don't at the least and and a worst case scenario you can burn your face so badly you can lose your airway and die

  • he can't just stand there?

  • Is that chunk of mag hot enough to spit water into hydrogen to blow the stuff out? I think that the magnesium was already burning(surface), when you added water, it was so hot it vaporized water, producing a steam explosion, blowing the magnium all over, giving it more surface

    not that it split water

  • he just stood there haha legend

  • clutch scatter shield?

  • he is so calm when that happens rofl

  • haha silly, you don't drink magnesium, i bet you drink somewhere around...epsom salt(magnesium sulfate) or maybe magnesium citrate, but normal magnesium in plai can become very poisonus in larger amounts

  • The magnesium was very hot and split the water into hydrogen and oxygen, causing those to detonate very weakly and explode magnesium everywhere i believe, some parts on cars and trucks are made of magnesium because it is light, strong, and nice and flexible at times......but can be veryyyy dangerous...

  • The engine block is probably Magnesium.

  • its most likely the transfer case been working on cars for 5 years never heard of magnesium block but their are tons of magnesium transfer cases

  • @dpaz86 theres also magnesium in the steering column that is really common on cars too

  • This happened to me last night, just about exactly as it happened in the video. It was a Dodge pickup fully involved and I suspect it was the fuse box. It was actually pretty awesome! I then kept a straight stream on it and extinguished the magnesium after several seconds. No injuries.

  • to the people out there that think the firefighters are "retards", most car fires are put out this way, when the firefighters know full well that this will happen. The fact is not every fire department has the budget needed to buy the various foams needed to deal with these fires. And water will work just fine in putting this kind of fire out. It just takes a while :)

  • @physicsbugga

absolutely correct. but what is a little bit not intelligent is the fact that this firefighter is not wearing his scba when around highly carcinogenic smoke.

when hitting a car fire, NAFTA regulations dictate that every firefighter should be on air

  • @ahmadsediqe What is NAFTA?

  • @physicsbugga right on yeah! we know the approach at a 45 degree angle, theres alot of training that goes towards vehicle fire containment.

  • @physicsbugga to people out there who thinks this guy isn't a retard. If you have any training at all you know that a car fire should be approached by a two man team, and I don't mean one on the hose and one on the engine. Also the spray pattern should be fanned out... not a direct stream. And almost every rural volunteer dept has a foam injection system... If they are the least bit managed

  • @physicsbugga PLEASE CHECK OUT "MAN BURNS MAGNESIUM THERMITE", Watch me put out a magnesium thermite fire with my bare hands using a liquid foam. If your a firemen you need this, low cost we understand fire department can be low on funding. This will save lives.

    Dr. Tom

  • Wow, I like how the firefighter has no understanding of chemistry therefore putting his life at risk, and doesn't stop after the first flash. lol. BTW, many vehicles us magnesium because it is light and strong, the fire that cannot be put out is a downside so most vehicles don't use it. (The fire can be put out with sand, nut how many fire trucks have a sand hose?)

  • the wheels of some cars contain magnesium plus various other parts hence why people go "my mags are on fire"

  • actually there are lots of vehicles out there now with magnesium in the dashes and in the rims

  • Holy SHIT !!!°!

  • you morrons chechk the MSDS of magnesium.

When you try to extinguish a magnesium fire with water MgO and H2 are formed. Hydrogengas will burn and thats what you see.

    so first this happens

    H2O + Mg --> MgO + H2

and second when there is an open flame this happens

    2 H2 + O2 --> H2O

  • yeah i think they know that now

  • @klaaskroegbaas shit man redox, ben blij dat ik vwo heb afgerond. lekker natuurkunde studeren over een paar dagen xD

  • Sorry, I must correct my comment: It`s not acethylene. i think it`s H. Sorry again!!

  • its the magnesium in the steering wheel. its pretty scary the first time when nobody tells you and you aim the hoseline in the cab and walla.

  • no its natrium

  • That`s right. If natrium has contact with water, the natrium will produce acethylene and this gas is extreme flammable and in some situations even very explosive because of it`s high energy concentration. Magnesium would only burn in the fire before the fireman will try to extinguish the fire.

  • so i did well? ^^

  • Yes, I think so.

  • Magnesium does that if you put it on water burning? Cool. I got to do it! xD
