Going into space has been done by governments; however, it has not worked out as a basic change in how people live on Earth...(exception being satellites and their applications.) These 'glory' people wouldn't have had a chance waiting on public funding... and competition is how humans develop. Signing your own paycheck is rare among humans; 6+ billion and we really need a lot of vitality if most of them are to stay alive.

I used to say crap about the Shuttle, but since I still haven't even launched a high altitude balloon, I've shut up about the Shuttle (it's actually pretty impressive from an engineering perspective).
