First of all, they aren't spikes. They are lag bolts. That's what's going into the "main" board holding up all the weight. It's also called a "Ledger". Tracy, you need to take those out and add a washer and a double coil lock or "spring" washer. The reason for this is extremely important.... The health of the tree! You monitor the spring washer for spacing. If there is a gap between each coil of the washer you are in good shape. If no gap, loosen the lag bolts so the tree can grow!
thank u so much im 11 and i have been building treehouses and huts since i was 6 and still biulding but recently i have been looking for how to build a tree house because i wanted a strong and stury tree house and your vid is the first on on how to exacly build a treehouse. to make it cooler u could make a pully.hope u reply thank u bye
@horses4eva3300 you need a long handled wrench (at least a foot) tool to crank around the bolt into the tree. It takes lots of brute force and determination.
We actually built it together and had our kids join in the fun - except for our son who was being surprised for his 10th Birthday. I designed it and worked on it for about 8 hours and then my husband came to help out and did do more than half the work. He rocks.
Yeah, I didn't want a roof because my favorite thing about being in the tree house (in a hammock chair) is to gaze up at the leaves russelling in the wind. Nice. Also when you close in a tree house with roof or walls you can get bee hives and yellow jacket nests, more spider webs etc. and then NO ONE wants to go in! Thanks for your nice comments :)

I've always wanted a treehouse. I'm 20 now and I plan to build one of these when I buy a house.

Its nice and all but isn't the tree going to die from all the bolts drilled into it?

@monkeysize Been a year and a half and the tree is looking great so far in all seasons.
