It passes my spine-tingling test. If it moves me to hear it, how much more it must move her to play it. Silly comments on youtube from people who expect musicians to be stone-faced.
She plays so passionately and calmly at the same time that it is delighting. After listening to her playing this Chopin masterpiece, I am ready to die so that she can play for me at my funeral.
Miss Grimaud is a wonderful being. Being wonderful she is entitled to exist. Then again, all she is doing is playing the piano, something SHE and we rather like. She is not fishing for Youtube approval. Let's remember this about most talented musicians.
The second theme(1:44) is played to slow!!!!!!!!! I dont understand why she choose a very slow tempo, neglecting the that the melody is very expressiv. She doesn't change the dynamics during the passage. Sorry to say that, but it sounds very boring
What I prefere? I don't know yet. Not familiar with the piece, but some day I probably is =) Have only one finished Chopin piece in my reportoire at the moment, but some more is coming soon. Liszt is occupating alot of my time =)
PS. I think she played beutifully. People should think less on "How something is supposed to sound", and a little more on how it sounds =)
The very truth is that she makes music the art it's meant to be. Every sound she creates is a finger up to intellectual idiots and frustrated snobs. She is no genius, she is a talented musician and a woman of art and heart. That's the only reason why artists and art lovers love her, and that's more than a sufficient reason.
@terrygowork What do you think you know about feelings? Don't know which school you've been taught in, but certainly not an English school anyway. Or not a good one if any. Not a music school either from what you let out.
@terrygowork Look. Everyone has their own style. A lot of people rubbish Lang Lang, and they shouldn't. It is very clear that Helene and Lang Lang are top line pianists, and you know it.
I notice that you like Sviatolslav Richter. So do I. But he acts far more than Helene does!. I don't see you criticising Richter. You wouldn't dare! That would be sacrilege. :)
I don't personally care what they do, as long as they produce a great sound.
Grimaud is real .Get hr in a room and justy SPEAKING her passion and commitment would show all of u lacking. SO musical she was singled out so early. Her playing is full of force ,character never timid more man than most. ANd she has enough sense to play her contemporaries.HOT DAMN if that dont win a peice of heaven all by itself!!!
Her technique is of the highest order. The musical "decisions" she makes are not to everyone's preferences. Unless you know Chopin, you can not call her interpretation "wrong". For me, at least as far as this piece goes, it works for me. In general, I love about 80% of the stuff she performs. She has very distinct musical sensibilities. Not everyone likes her for that. I do and again, most of the time I find her performances full of emotion, genuine and refreshing!
Thanks for posting this... but what's with the negative comments people? I mean we are all entitled to an opinion; and my opnion is there are people on here with too much time on their hands to look up a piano player they don't appreciate, and then comment why Ms Grimaud's piano playing is imperfect. Personally, I like her style of playing because she plays with real heart felt emotion, which speaks louder than taught techniques. Peace and Love.
A bunch of conservatory students just "out of the egg" claiming to know the ONE "right" way to play everything. To be sure that's more obnoxious than the repetion of the grace note. It is however true she can do better than that.
I'd like to invite watching Nuccio Trotta's performances. An unknown pianist who studied with great pianists as Aldo Ciccolini. I think that's a pianist worth listening in to. Thanks.
I don`t actually need to look at someone while I listen to their playing(that`s why I am not such a fan of Lang Lang;),but I wonder, how such primitive (and not even professinonal-no legato, bad pedalling,no fine sounds, and which Chopin is the most full of WRONG TEXT!)playing of this genius, complex music can be loved by anyone...well,I guess however bad something is-someone will like it-that shall be a consolation 4 everyone...
dude you and grigor may be right but the only reason is that her facial expression is not authentic. from the music tho it is impossible to tell, but only suspect from the blandness
In Chopin, the grace notes prior to a trill are always written with an extra "repeated" note, but it is performance practice to NEVER play the repeated note. It is dead wrong.
You are absolutely right. The grace notes are played on the beat, an appoggiatura to the trill, which begins on the auxiliary. Thus there is no repeated note. Not understanding this ruins practically every performance of the Baracarolle, except for Arrau.
She belongs to one of those pianists who are not doing kitsch like it is done in Chopin,Brahms and so on.Everyone can do kitsch and old people can watch and say "o,so beautiful, she understands Chopin..."if you see what I mean.Unique performance to me!
She plays the trills wrong. In Chopin there is NO repeated note prior to the trill-it's only written that way! The middle section sounds pretty monochromatic to me. Each phrase sounds exactly the same and at the same dynamic. What's up with that?
The non-repeating of the grace notes is something that a pianist of Grimaud's stature should know. Makes me wonder if pianists like her really have taken the time to really STUDY instead of playing 200 concerts a year!
I hate to disillusion you. The general decline in this kind of knowledge among performers has a lot to do with the fact that the theory and composition requirements have been watered down in many conservatories.

@piuotre I disagree, playing it slowly helps with the contrast, some people have murdered it by playing it too fast.
I play it that speed myself.

Chopin intended his ornaments to be played in the baroque style. The trill begins on the upper auxiliary, so there is no repeated note.
