He was Prussian, which is not quite the same thing as being German although Prussia was the major force in creating a unified German nation much later. His service was invaluable, although he probably would not be legally fit for military service today.

A Prussian gave us the military edge over England. We owe our freedom to the state we would later help destroy in the 1940's. What irony.
