  • we had fugu in Oita!

  • May I suggest...did you mean shumai instead of shunmai?

  • jojosmojojo: That is absolutely right! Yes, I misheard Misato and typed in the wrong thing. Thanks for catching it!

  • How did you end up an english teacher in Japan? Im about to start my MA in TESOL and I would like to be like you, live in another country and work

  • I WANT FUGU!!

  • $100 to $300?!

  • Pretty high yes. I am going to take a wild guess its either for the price of the fish OR to prevent legions of people eating the stuff since is CAN be deadly.

  • Great vid, thanks man.

  • Thanks a lot, great vid, as always!

    Regards

  • MMMMM thats my kind of fish n chips

  • I hope Matt is ok ^^; Been 1 month since he logged on

  • this is fricken great ... I am going to eat this... i hope the cook aint still pissed at me.

  • 100 to 300 dollars to have the chance to kill myself

  • prepared several ways so you can choose the proper way of death. lol

  • You have to be crazy to pay 100 - 300$ to have a chance to be lethaly poisoned on your birthday

  • oo ur from vancouver!!! me too

  • I'm trying to get to Japan to teach English. I'd love to be there a couple years, but 8 years? Man... I'd go crazy being any one place 8 years, I think... Who knows, though... Maybe my wanderlust will be quelled and I'll be able to settle for that long, though.

I'd NEVER eat Fugu, though... Unless someone put a gun to my head, I suppose. It's expensive and potentially deadly and It's supposed to have a very subdued taste... That's 3 strikes, man.

  • Misato is your girlfriend?

  • I'll have to watch this again, I love your videos, but this one made me hungry.

I had no idea that fugu cost that much. That definitely makes it one of those items that you have to sit down and enjoy with a bunch of people, not just a one or two person deal?

It's always more fun to eat with friends anyway though.

  • Please delete this movie as soon as possible.

If Japanese Government identifies this movie, shop "mitsugo" that you ate globefish becomes the suspension of business, and it is the situation that cannot eat the globefish dish of other Japanese restaurants at all.

  • gionoikake: Heya, you should really share what you are smoking with the rest of us. =D

I appreciate your comment and sentiment, but I have it on good authority that your information is incorrect. There is no harm serving Fugu at licensed fugu restaurants. Besides, if there was any truth to it, I don't think the web site usuki-fugudotcom would exist. (Please click on the link listed in the "more info" area to see advertisements for Mitsugo and many other fugu restaurants in Usuki).

  • I was born and raised in Usuki-city. It is the joy that is great in the same way as you that I eat globefish.

In Japan, the problem does not have that I eat globefish at all. But, the globefish holds poison (tetrodotoxin), and it is forbidden to eat it about a particular part. The government limits business for the shop if it becomes known to cook this part.

  • This looks awesome and your life looks so fun ...

I want to go to Japan but i dont have the chance to ...i wanted to get a japanese girlfriend :( well i guess nothing always goes how you want it

  • Awesome soundtrack LOL!

  • Your vidz are fuckin' great dude! Make some more!

You definitely get a shout out in one of my newer vids ;D

  • ive always wanted to try fugu, but im a little gun shy because of the danger involved. is the taste worth the danger?

  • Ah I forgot you were a Canadian for awhile. Go Canada XD Great to see you're still fine and kicking in Oita, I've been enjoying your vids about Japan for awhile now, It's definetly helped down my craving until I finally get to go there. Just been attempting to learn some language skills before I go in a few years. Look forward to future vids man =)

  • Hi Matt !

    Great video :)

I almost sure I went to this restaurant in Usuki with my Furansu-go Kurabu 'grandmas' when I was living in Oita, because I ate exactely the same menu !

My favourite one is the Fugu Karaage though, the only one psychologically safe for me, hehe !

You have such a nice family-in-law ! Hope all is well in Oita !

  • Kyaroita: Heya, great to hear from you! Hehe... I understand what you mean about "psychologically safe"!

It looks like you love Rock Band! I want to try someday.

  • That food looks delicious, man I wish I was there....and had the money to eat it hahaha.

  • Lol with my luck the first time I tried fugu I'd die.

  • Matt I was wondering if the Yakuza got you or something, you never made a video in so long. [lol]

But the Fugu looks really good, and i would like to try it besides might end up dieing like Homer. lol

  • very interesting, thanks for sharing this moment whith us

  • Another cool video...Fan-fugu-tastic!!!!!!!!!!

  • Very awesome, Matt! How did it all end up tasting? Looked pretty good to me XD

  • xepher99: Dan! Hey man... it was really tasty. But, I think that they sauces and condiments contained most of the flavour. I would say the soft but crispy texture of the fugu is the most outstanding point.

    You going to Jenny's wedding??

  • Glad to see you back in action.... sweet vid as usual!!!

  • Haha, great video! I have now be enlightened on the almighty food known as "fugu". It's been a while since the last vid. Hope to see more soon!

  • you really should make vids more often lol,

    -great vid

  • Ahh i have become really hungry:)

  • You're pretty brave to eat that, I probably would have wimped out haha! You guys looked like you had fun. =) Nice video by the way~ hope you keep them coming~

  • hmm ...didnt know if could be eaten in so many ways...koo vid

  • love your vids. Hope to see more soon

  • Another awesome video! I have always wondered about fugu, taste, texture that sort of thing. I've never had the opportunity to eat it before, but I think I may do some day.

  • ontayloro20: Thanks Oli! Yeah, actually, the flavour is a little tough to describe. It is pretty subtle. It's NOT a strong fishy flavour like mackeral, etc.

  • welcome back !

  • As always a brilliant video! Keep up the good work!!!

  • "Poison.. poison... Tasty Fish!" Heehee!

Great video Matt! Glad to see another one. Really well made!

I had my JET interview yesterday. It was... okay but I said "chigau" like "no" but... yeah I hope I didn't offend my interviewer. Apart from that it was good.

    Thanks for the vid!

  • dyndan19: Oh cool! I am glad to hear it went well -- I am curious, what was the question that you answered "chigau"? You were applying for ALT, right?

  • Yes for ALT that's right. Eeeeto... the lady asked me did I learn Japanese, or did I know much Japanese? Actually I only understood "something something-nihongo-something" XP and I was nervous and forgot that I could answer in English haha! and so I answered in not so good Japanese. Is it really rude to use "chigau"? I think I should have said "hai, chigaimasu". Oh well, it's a learning experience. (^^)

  • They were prolly amazed that you understood some Japanese. No worries!

Yeah, with people you first meet it's always safest to use -masu/desu form. Anyway, let me know where you are dispatched to!

  • I THINK THIS IS YOUR BEST VIDEO EVER!

  • pachinko32 & shinmei2006: Thanks very much you guys! =) Hopefully, there are more adventures on the way sooner this time.

  • lol, the simpsons sound bytes make it hilarious. Thanks for the update man. Always fun to see your videos...

  • i think the buzz of it being poisanous (sory for spellng i hate that word =P) makes it all the more appealing.

but dont they show their license before they prepare you th fugu ?

well ive always wanted to try it but not been to japan yet =(

  • fugu is super oishii. the only people who die from eating it are the amatures who think they know how to prepare it. i wouldn't eat it unless prepared by a pro.

  • saiyouken: Good point! Thanks for the comment. =)

  • wow that's a lot of fugu :P

  • Holy shit 8 years?! That's a lot!

Btw what's up with the start?

  • kowakatta? hehe

  • Finally a video =)

    Thanks.

  • Love the Homer remix. Fugu looks yummy, but I won't eat it because I'm afriad I'll die.

  • deirdre71: It's pretty safe... but every year there ARE poisonings. Thanks for the comment.
