Pretty high yes. I am going to take a wild guess its either for the price of the fish OR to prevent legions of people eating the stuff since is CAN be deadly.
I'm trying to get to Japan to teach English. I'd love to be there a couple years, but 8 years? Man... I'd go crazy being any one place 8 years, I think... Who knows, though... Maybe my wanderlust will be quelled and I'll be able to settle for that long, though.
I'd NEVER eat Fugu, though... Unless someone put a gun to my head, I suppose. It's expensive and potentially deadly and It's supposed to have a very subdued taste... That's 3 strikes, man.
I'll have to watch this again, I love your videos, but this one made me hungry.
I had no idea that fugu cost that much. That definitely makes it one of those items that you have to sit down and enjoy with a bunch of people, not just a one or two person deal?
It's always more fun to eat with friends anyway though.
If Japanese Government identifies this movie, shop "mitsugo" that you ate globefish becomes the suspension of business, and it is the situation that cannot eat the globefish dish of other Japanese restaurants at all.
gionoikake: Heya, you should really share what you are smoking with the rest of us. =D
I appreciate your comment and sentiment, but I have it on good authority that your information is incorrect. There is no harm serving Fugu at licensed fugu restaurants. Besides, if there was any truth to it, I don't think the web site usuki-fugudotcom would exist. (Please click on the link listed in the "more info" area to see advertisements for Mitsugo and many other fugu restaurants in Usuki).
I was born and raised in Usuki-city. It is the joy that is great in the same way as you that I eat globefish.
In Japan, the problem does not have that I eat globefish at all. But, the globefish holds poison (tetrodotoxin), and it is forbidden to eat it about a particular part. The government limits business for the shop if it becomes known to cook this part.
Ah I forgot you were a Canadian for awhile. Go Canada XD Great to see you're still fine and kicking in Oita, I've been enjoying your vids about Japan for awhile now, It's definetly helped down my craving until I finally get to go there. Just been attempting to learn some language skills before I go in a few years. Look forward to future vids man =)
I almost sure I went to this restaurant in Usuki with my Furansu-go Kurabu 'grandmas' when I was living in Oita, because I ate exactely the same menu !
My favourite one is the Fugu Karaage though, the only one psychologically safe for me, hehe !
You have such a nice family-in-law ! Hope all is well in Oita !
xepher99: Dan! Hey man... it was really tasty. But, I think that they sauces and condiments contained most of the flavour. I would say the soft but crispy texture of the fugu is the most outstanding point.
You're pretty brave to eat that, I probably would have wimped out haha! You guys looked like you had fun. =) Nice video by the way~ hope you keep them coming~
Another awesome video! I have always wondered about fugu, taste, texture that sort of thing. I've never had the opportunity to eat it before, but I think I may do some day.
ontayloro20: Thanks Oli! Yeah, actually, the flavour is a little tough to describe. It is pretty subtle. It's NOT a strong fishy flavour like mackeral, etc.
Great video Matt! Glad to see another one. Really well made!
I had my JET interview yesterday. It was... okay but I said "chigau" like "no" but... yeah I hope I didn't offend my interviewer. Apart from that it was good.
dyndan19: Oh cool! I am glad to hear it went well -- I am curious, what was the question that you answered "chigau"? You were applying for ALT, right?
Yes for ALT that's right. Eeeeto... the lady asked me did I learn Japanese, or did I know much Japanese? Actually I only understood "something something-nihongo-something" XP and I was nervous and forgot that I could answer in English haha! and so I answered in not so good Japanese. Is it really rude to use "chigau"? I think I should have said "hai, chigaimasu". Oh well, it's a learning experience. (^^)
fugu is super oishii. the only people who die from eating it are the amatures who think they know how to prepare it. i wouldn't eat it unless prepared by a pro.
we had fugu in Oita!
