funny, i didnt know that the re did this song later on, i knew he played it early in his career, i liked his earlier one more for some reason although towards the end, his voice projected such meaning and heart
TheJessegangsta: I just played the song for my son - he loves Johnny Cash lyrics. He asked me how old it is. I told him I first heard it in 1960 but, I made a guess for him about when it was recorded: 1958. Quite a coincidence if you are correct (and I believe you are.) I told him that it must have been lost in the mists of time because I never ever heard it on any oldies stations. Back then they played John's songs along with all other rock 'n roll songs. Yes, I am that old.
.One of my favourite Cash songs. The man was a great songwriter and I've been a
fan since his Sun recording days...moved to upload my own tribute: Daddy Knew Johnny Cash.MOV - in admiration of his huge talent. He was to country music
Such a sad song and Johnny is a genius for the stories he tells. And personally I love these ballad songs. That guy who disliked this song I don't resent, but I would love to know for what reasons he/she dislikes it, just interest as I didn't think this was dislikeable.
Johny Cash owes the city of San Francisco well over 25 dollars for the utterance of "Frisco". Emperor Norton's law and none shall be able to appose it.
Today's special offer is a used Lady Gaga AND a clean, unused Justin Bieber for the whopping price of only ONE Johnny Cash! That's right God, trade our 2 *cough* most valued artists for only ONE Cash!
But wait!-
If you bring back Johnny within the next 30 minutes, you also get a FREE complete and PURE set of the Jonas Brothers with it!

I wrote here that I'll write novel based on this song. And I almost did. Hope it will be ready till the end of next week. If somebody has interest about this novel I'll send it to her/him. Want to know if you will like it...It is not sad strory
@terryb1260 Your story is essentially impossible. Cash, despite the legendary rebel image was arrested 7 times each for misdeamnors, meaning he only spent one night in jail each time. In other words, he would have had to stole the song in one night. And why would a man who wrote over 1000 songs ever need to steal someone elses when he could just write one ten times better anyways. Go hate somewhere else...
The only reasion I pulled up this song is to let everyone know that johnny cash is a theving son of a bitch" he stoled that song from my uncle Don while they were locked up in the pen together. Like another song of his went "May you rote and burn in hell" my uncle died penney less while johnny trash made millions.
@terryb1260 Sure fella...all our uncles wrote a Johnny Cash song. In fact my uncle Ray wrote Walk The Line ten years after it was released. Genius my uncle Ray.
The only reasion I pulled this song up is to let you know that Johnny cash was a theving son of a bitch" My uncle wrote that song while he and johnny trash were locked up in the same pen. My uncle died pennyless. Burn in hell john. one more thing if you want to hear the real song catch my show Terry Lee , Live and got nothing to hide. and lord if that sob made it to heaven would you kick his ass for me and my uncle donny

My second favorite Cash song next to 'Would you Lay with Me (In a Field of Stone).' Luv the sentiment contained within the lyrics. Luv the message about life and what's truly important. And it ain't all the stuff we collect or the money in our pockets. Johnny knew how to get social messages across without being obvious, which is one of the reasons he was so damn good !
I remember first hearing this in a HMV. I head this song, stop and listened and cried. It was beautiful song and the first song I ever heard that made me cry.
Great song, I'll be performing this tomorrow Sun 5th Dec at the Robin 2 R&B club in Bilston nr Wolverhampon, It's the song I most love to sing and people love to hear it. Free entry from 13:30 pm
The man will be remembered forever. His music will echo across the centuries. Strangers will hear his name long after he's gone. Rest in peace Johnny Cash.
It comes from Hank Williams : Wedding Bells are ringing. The music is absolutely the same. Williams sang 'Blue eyes crying in the rain' when Willie Nelson was in primary school. If Williams should have lived 20 years longer?
i still cant hear this song without starting to cry! its a really sad sond, but no doubt a good song. Stop talking about whos the king, michal jackson or elvis, its fucking johnny cash :)
I don't know....But I have idea to write novel based on this song. How the man comes home after the Civil war-probably he stayed at prison just 1 year but the American civil war is 1861-65...What he will find home....Just idea for novel. Hope to write it next year and post in net
@PunkMartyr no offense, but you shouldnt develop an emotional attachment to songs...trust me, i know from experience. But yes it is an amazingly sad album
@Heowa yes it is sad...usually this is when i would say something wise..but theres not much else to say except this album is amazingly sad. But you must also understand that the album this is in was Johnny Cash's last album made, so in a way you kinda gotta figure he knew he was dyin, so why not tell everyone in the best way he knew how, ya know?
@9366h True...and I'm not saying I dislike it because it's sad, not at all! I absolutely love it, and I think it somehow has to be this way with sad songs...you know, if something is able to touch you in a way that it can even make you cry, it has to be well done. If one says a song is sad, this song must have given them the chance to feel what's being delivered in the first place. And what else is there to a good song?
