Yes one of the great Kinks albums which I would count in the top 5 of their catalogue. It really is the gift that keeps on giving. It is debatable & I know it. I remember when this monster came out , we had 4 coming of age teen boys in the same bedroom & we all loved rock and roll. We had The White Album, Arthur, American Woman, Fresh Cream, Iron Butterfly & more with a little stereo record player I still have dreams about & would crank that up as loud as it would go & drive our parents nuts
If I had to choose one line from one song of the Kink's that best summarized Ray Davies' world view, it would have to be, "Arthur, could be that the world was wrong." For anyone who ever thought that the Kinks were taking the piss out of the Arthur's of the world, this song and this line shows more compassion for the powerless and downtrodden than any other example I can think of from any other rock band. You can argue who was best all you want but the Kinks are amazing and my favorite band.
another great Kinks album from their finest period, which for me was Face to Face right through Muswell Hillbillies; that's 6 albums plus an amazing run of singles- almost completely ignored-and banned from performimg- in the USA. 15 years after this they finally got their due in here in the USA
Kinks weren't banned in the U.S., the unions wouldn't cooperate. Also, they got plenty of airplay over the years. Believe it or not, some of the stuff you like doesn't appeal to others.
Arthur was released the same year as the Who's Tommy, but it didn't get much recognition. I love the Who, but Arthur kicks Tommy's butt! Arthur is one of my favourite Kinks LP's, and in my top ten of Kinks songs. Bush, and soon Obama, along with other world leaders should listen to "Some Mother's Son" and see if they get it. The line, "All dead soldiers look the same", wow.
If I had any thoughts again of ever trying to learn to play guitar I quickly forgot them right then and there, sort of like when I watch a Hendrix video! LOL!
anyway I was sitting literally at Dave's feet because only 75 or so radio (WNEW FM, NYC) contest winners, promo and record company and radio station people got seats all guests of the band had to find any place they could to sit or stand, any way watching Dave's hands that close up from the angle I was at and especially & specifally for the title song PHOBIA was amazng.
Reminds me of Randy California on a song called " Street Worm " off the 12 Dreams of Dr.Sardonicus album! and if that doesn't do it for you listen to the title track Phobia, or Wall of Fire, absolutely brilliant too. I was watching Dave's hands once up as close as you possibly could be at a radio show in NYC at the Jimmy Hendrix studios duing the 93 Phobia tour when they did a special live radio show broadcast from the studio,
The thing with Dave is even when his guitar is not right out in front of a song or in your face so to speak he is still doing amazing things if you listen close enought, take for example " Driving " off the Arthur album,Dave's guitar work is very subtle but OH so sweet, really listen closey to what he is doing through out the whole song in the background.
One of the all time greatest albums ever released of all time by one of the Greatest bands of all time. God save the KinKs, Ray and Dave Davies. - Frank Lima, Montvale, New Jersey

Ray and Dave sing so great together on this track. From Face to Face through Lola, maybe the most consistent run of quality albums by any band ever.

In his autobio, Dave said he recorded this "with tears" in his eyes, thinking about their relatives who emigrated to Australia.

Quick question, the one singing in the beginning here is is Dave Davies I assume?
notaphaser 2 years ago
I believe you are correct.
I think Ray's voice then predominates when they sing "If only life were easy...."

arthur is a great album but why isn't muswell hillbillies more highly acclaimed? it has got some of the kinks' best songs.
