Such a great master, Tito Gobbi. Amazing to see him in a tuxedo instead of a costume for an opera character. And of course there have been a lot of gorgeous Italian movie actresses, but Gina Lollobrigida was the most beautiful of them all.

All I know viewing this for the first time is the look she gives him just before he sings. I have seen that look before and it is definitely a "come over to my room" look.
He sounds great and he deffenitely has a presence, but this scene and his performance upset the meaning of the song for me. Using it as a cavalier flirting tool. This song is about pain and longing and the desparation one feels till the truth is emotionally ripped from you. Not a parlor trick. Although,I'm a Gigli man myself.
This is Gobbi, not Gigli. If you saw the film, you would know that he is not flirting at the moment, but she has put him on the spot. But regardless, the meaning of the song has been delivered just right, because a great artist like him could do it in his sleep.
"Mad About Opera". It is a rather silly comedy, but well written (Mario Monicelli co-wrote it) and enjoyable. In addition Gobbi sings Prologue, and Bechi also has two arias (Escamilio & Barbiere), but this song is the best musical number there, and alone would be worth the price of DVD, if it wasn't on YT for free :-).
He was my favourtie baritone since I was 10 too! Just discovering his early films and how young, handsome and wonderful he was then although I adored him later too!
If all you're used to is his later material, this video will come as a surprise. Like a lot of gifted and highly intelligent singers who took other aspects of their career and health seriously (Caruso comes to mind), Gobbi unwisely smoked -- that's where a lot of the rough raspy quality comes from that you hear in later recordings, although he used it to terrific effect.
It is so refreshing to hear the young Gobbi voice, singing and speaking. His rejecting the microphone is like saying, "opera singers don't need one." Certo, la signorina é molto bella.
Gobbi was the consumate artist. You do not hear singing like this anymore. He was great in everything that he did. He got into the soul of the music. I was fortunate enough to work with him in a Master Class in london many years back. I can tell you that I learned more from him within a few minutes that I had learned ian any conservatory or teacher. What artist. How sad that there are no singers of his caliber today.

If one doesn't know what bel-canto is, listen to Tito Gobbi. If you listen to Tito Gobbi, you know what bel-canto is.

Although,I'm a Gigli man myself.
mcirnigliaro 4 years ago
This is Gobbi, not Gigli. If you saw the film, you would know that he is not flirting at the moment, but she has put him on the spot. But regardless, the meaning of the song has been delivered just right, because a great artist like him could do it in his sleep.

what is the title of the film?
imartynov 4 years ago

One of the glorious moments in singing art! He was my favorite baritone since the age of 10 (my age, not his, of course:-))

It is so refreshing to hear the young Gobbi voice, singing and speaking. His rejecting the microphone is like saying, "opera singers don't need one." Certo, la signorina é molto bella.

Sí, señor, importantísimo detalle! Rechaza el micrófono!

Is it possible to be better? I dont believe that.
I feel pity for the creatures going through life without having listened to such divine beauty.
Thank to Italy for giving such gift to the world.

Perdone. La signora e squisita!

O rendere migliore: La signora e molto piacevole alla vista!
Is that right? Perhaps not. Wonder if Gina ever gave Italian lessons?

He declined to use the microphone,. I wonder why?
fruglescot 4 years ago
@fruglescot Because opera singers don't use microphones in such relatively small concert rooms?
