Werdum had Vinny Maghaleas (sp) in this exact position for about a minute at the ADCC 2011 and couldn't finish. It's because Hardy got his shoulder so high that made it difficult.
If he'd pinched his knees together and lifted his hips, he could suplex the shit out of that arm. Oh, well, GSP is not exactly a BJJ wiz, but he's still one of the best in the sport.
Exactly! though GSP has improved leaps and bounds in his BJJ game. no top level blackbelt would ever slap on an armber from that position and NOT finish it on a guy Dan Hardy's level...dont get me wrong Dan is tough, and that probably hurt like hell, and the setup to the armbar was GREAT, but that was a weak ass armbar by GSP......
@63Bueno You just said"the Set up of the armbar was GREAT" and "Dan is though and that probably hurt like Hell" But that was a weak ass armbar"LOL That doesn't make much sense But I know what you mean. Many incl.me believes that GSP let that armbar go because he did not wanted to cause injury,He is a Gentleman like him or not and he doesn't have a mean streak in him unless the fight is Personal like the Serra 2 or Penn 2 fights.GSP denied it but Rogan and Jackson both said that what's happened
@jozsefkacsa I think he mean the transition from the back to the armbar. And the setup was great, but the execution could use some work. When you don't isolate your opponent's arm, it gives them space to roll so that you don't have the elbow joint right even when you have the wrist positioned properly. But still, props to both guys.
@Murchik1985 Yes I did get it it was just kind of funny the way he was praising it and the next line he called it weak ass but I got him.Actually look up Werdum vs Maghaleas Werdum had him in the same armbar and could not finish him and Werdum is top 5 Jiu Jitsu style MMA fighter on the planetThanx for your comment cheers
it makes perfect sense...he set the armbar up beautifully, the finish was not black belt level....he was not elevating his hips properly to maximimze that armbar...see Diaz vs Cyborg for a perfect armbar.....
@ezdraelon No they weren't. Raising his hips would mean his butt would come off the ground, and cause the elbow to hyper extend even more. He also didn't squeeze Hardy's arm tight enough with his thighs. If he had done both, Hardy would not have been able to roll out of it. But still Hardy is one tough dude for not giving up.
why do the crowd always have to do satanic hand signs why cant they just do a thumbs up lol, anyway that was a top armbar maybe hardy should have tapped
There's actually a video by the Gracies (all part of their channel where they break down UFC fights -- Gracie Breakdown) that explain how Hardy didn't tap or get his arm damaged. It makes a lot of sense actually.
GSP made a mistake of pointing the thumb downwards (which caused no pain to Hardy), you have to point the thumb upwards to finish an armbar (someone like GSP, it doesn't take much energy to finish an armbar). The only damage that GSP did during this was cracking Hardy's shoulder...but Hardy did a VERY good job of rolling out and escaping that before GSP realized his mistake...surprised that Joe Rogan didn't catch that..small details count!
@GrowingUpSortOf you've got your principles right but you're wrong in saying it caused hardy no pain. I've been in that situation and it's very painfull, althought the bone isnt under tremendous pressure the musles and joints are and trust me an arm bar like that it painfull. Feels like your veins are just going to snap.
@walesefc i guess, but i've had my arms snapped from an armbar three times. i've also had my arm trapped the same way once and the only thing that got damaged was my shoulder (to my surprise) and that shit just went numb
@DeadlyNinja1702 i wouldn't discount that hardy DOESN'T have bones of steel, cuz he's a muay thai fighter. but bones of steel or not, NOBODY can survive an armbar (if executed properly)
@GrowingUpSortOf Are you sure man? It looks like he has his thumb pointing up. I was gonna say that GSP would have finished it if he pinched his knees together. But hey, Im not the UFC Welterweight champ.. so dont mind me. haha
@FireDivine02 If you DON'T BELIEVE me, look up a follow up video of GSP getting coached in the locker room by his BJJ coach...he says the SAME THING I say. pinching your knees together is extra security so that the opponent can't twist and roll out of it (causing an escape) helpful but not necessary for an armbar
I see Dan Hardy fight a lot. I don't think I've seen him actually win though.

George's Jiu-Jitsu is not that great in my opinion. Sloppy armbar against Hughes. although he did RNC Trigg.
