Someone, either animated or actor will re-create Errol Flynn in future films. Depp could have done Flynn but chose otherwise. Regardless, Errol reigns as the true swashbuckler in filmdom.
Johnny Depp is not worthy of carrying Errol Flynn's baggage. There is only one master, and that master was Errol Flynn. He created the mold and will NEVER be touched !
Getting back to one of my pet peeves, when can I PURCHASE this movie in colour and surroundsound. I'm trying to be patient. Please don't give me any of the usual purist nonsense. DO IT!
Thank you for posting this -- it is wonderful for me, as I grew up on this beach and used to spend a lot of time in the small cove by myself. I would sneak out of the house and climb into the caves to watch the stars at night.
I feel that Basil Rathbone's French Privateer in this movie is somewhat less inspiring than Errol's "English Accent". Basil Rathbone was a great actor, but this is not his finest role. Errol outshines him here, not only in fencing, but also in ACTING.
@errolfan gotta admit that when you consider that this was Errol Flynn's debut in Hollywood. Not a bad job at all. But Rathbone is a gem, he's totally enjoying himself here, I suspect he KNOWS his French accent isn't the greatest. Flynn is actually supposed to be playing an Irishman though :-)
@SPQR62 No, it couldn't be! He was actually Sherlock Holmes in real life.... As far as fencing goes Basil was the best, Tyrone Power was extremely good and Errol looked marvelous. I miss all three of them.
Basil Rathbone was best known for his "bad guy roles" back then, outside of his "Sherlock Holmes" movies. He was actually very good friends with Errol Flynn and many others in Hollywood, and was highly respected.
For what it's worth, the IMDB trivia says not only that Rathbone openly mocked the then-unknown Flynn throughout the filming (often by boasting how much more he was being paid) but also intentionally injured him during the sword fight.

Watch Rathbone's eyes open after he was killed, at 8:12! Haha, the camera stayed on him too long.

@ttt8699 I'm paraphrasing, but it reminds me of a Monty Python movie quote, "I'm not dead yet".

I hear Rathbone was overwhelmingly better than Flynn at swordplay.

@goback3spaces It's true he was. Basil Rathbone was at the time the best fencer in Hollywood.

@goback3spaces true true.

There's never been another face like de Havilland's. Wow that was a badass scene. The hero of heroes

Not only that. Olivia could act.

So could Errol Flynn. Johnny Depp is a pathetic joke next to him. Flynn was the greatest of the great!

The Tyrone power connection is slanderously false.
Rathbone was only moderately friendly with Flynn.
Considering Rathbone's Shakespearean background, he was hardly what you'd refer to as a MOFO.
The injury Flynn received was planned by director Michael Curtiz, and apocryphal at that.
Keira Knightly may be pretyy but she lacks the class and dignity of deHavilland.

Oh yeah, I really would have NO problem being this pirates captive for a few weeks. None at all.
Olivia was all class, wasn't she? Hard to remember she was cast as the "plain" Melanie Wilkes in GWTW. These people were the best.

they used to refer to Basil as the nicest guy in hollywood! and as odd as it seems, I bet he was a cool MOFO to know

Olivia de Havilland was MUCH prettier than Keira Knihtley. Basil and Errol duel is classic.

Beautiful coreography, and you've gotta love Rathbones' accent. Am I the only one who wants to see him "screw a man's eyes out of his head"? :P

I love Errol Flynn's work! The Adventures of Robin Hood is my favourite movie of all time; if you have the final duel clip, please post!
