@gmen2007champs Because in Europe, that isn't necessary when there are lights and barriers on the crossing. Probably something to do with a lower idiot quotient in the driving population.
@Kromaatikse lol yeh cuz in the States every train blows for every crossing no matter what, but ur prob right we have so many more accidents at crossings then they prob do in europe
@gmen2007champs There definitely are still level crossing accidents in Europe, but they are almost always shown to be the road user's fault - eg. ignoring the lights and/or driving around half-barriers. Since they already ignored the warnings available, providing an additional warning by sounding the horn is almost always useless. However, the horn is sounded briefly at many private crossings which don't have warning systems, and a "whistle board" is provided to remind train drivers of this.
@Kromaatikse I'd say the most common reason for level crossing accidents in Sweden are people who think the gates are made of solid steel and won't try to drive through them when they get stuck. That and people walking across gateless crossings (lights and bells only) with in-ear earphones in their ears with loud music on...
@michal98ify That's standard European behaviour when the barriers block the footpath as well as the road. The bells (or sirens in Britain) are meant to warn pedestrians who might not look at (or may even be unable to see) the traffic lights. Once the barriers are down, they take over that job and the bells turn off to reduce the noise nuisance.
@Merlinbird It's to let you know the system is powered and functioning properly. If you were to come to this crossing and no lights were on, you assume that the system is malfunctioning and you need to make sure there is no train approaching.

@2011Maynard There isn't one. European trains have horns, but don't blow them at crossings.

What's that on the right, a sidewalk or bike path, or another road?
Also I love the snow on the "eyelid" of the signals - it makes it look beautiful.
