I think the fact that the show is rough around the edjes gives it that special something. Anyone who is offended my Jay's observations obviously doesn't understand sarcasm. I love the show and watch it as often as I can on BBC America. They probably use all the extra money to buy all those expensive cars they abuse. I'm glad they didn't go ahead with the American version even though I'm American. The British sence of humo(u)r and their personalities really make the show what it is.
I like Top Gear a lot, mostly for the humor, and the car reviews. But at the same time, I just hate how they automatically think everything that's not from GB is shit and not worth attention. But the show often rebounds from that negative quality with classic humor and blatant observations.
@toyoracing89 They are equally scathing about Brit cars - especially old saloons like the Marina. the only cars they don't knock are Italian. They love Alfas, ferraris and Lambos. They do show a sneaking regard for Japs and were very positive about their cars in the latest American 'Challenge' . Anyway, they are mainly entertainers and what they say should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Now their insults are quite hilarious, especially when they fail to acknowledge the quality of British carmakers being matched and exceeded by that of even Japanese and...gasp, America. But overall, it's a good show to watch with a great deal of humor and is always interesting.

I think that Jay Leno is great, and while American humour doesn't always go down as well this side of the Atlantic, his humour from what I have seen of it is hillarious. He's a big fan of Top Gear as he said, but also a huge fan of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Personally I would sooner they pulled a Top Gear USA programme, rather than kill it's appeal stone dead as they have done with other BBC remakes like "Life on Mars, USA".

Not starting trouble but, you two are arguing over a show which is scripted for the viewers but then the cast are aloud to say what they want for example. they went to Bolivia recently , and they were set a challenge and also set so much money to spend in the country and also told when to talk about the cars and where, the show is massive over here, JC, RH, JM swears in this episode, which wasnt scripted, you both are arguing over who has made it big as a comiden, nothing to do with Jay Leno
Yeah I agree this argument came about from earlier conversations relating to why Top Gear America was canceled. He then proceeded to make some, frankly ignorant comments about Americans and here we are.
He was afraid that he would not be able to replicate the same feel and rapour with the american public. It's pretty rare to have that kind of coheasion between presenters. Plus i heard the execs at NBC were getting too involved and apparently they know very little about the show.
I read that they canceled it because they said "the humor just wouldnt go home with an american audience" which is crap since they love the english one. They also said they wouldnt be able to be "honest" about american cars or they would "discurrage" advertisement infront of and following the show if they talked shit about american cars. Also.. would an american network allow potential harm to come to their presenters ? Going across Vietnam on scooters ? No insurance company would cover that.
Yeah that's all true and likely why the series would have failed. However, Adam Carolla was going to host the show and he would have Americanized the humor. However the studio/network execs would have destroyed the show with their input. They very rarely asses the key elements to an existing shows success.
The real reason they killed the show was the crisis in the US auto industry. I am in advertising and the spend for the majority of auto makers dipped significantly during the period.
They would have scripted it to death with a team of writers just like on Jay Leno, Letterman and all that. They wouldnt be able to find 3 people in the entire USA that could be funny on the spot AND know about cars. American humor is all about scripting and one liners. Which is why every single english commedian that go to USA get a major break, film deals and get to host talk shows. because they are naturally funny. NOTHING is spontaneous on american TV.
Well Top Gear in the UK is scripted. And Adam Carolla would have been a good start because he is really funny and knows quite a bit about cars. You should DL his podcast; it's #1 in the US and not full of 1 liners.
To be honest there are some excellent comedians in the US. And Jon Stewart's Daily Show is very spontaneous. The issue is the regulations here in the US and the impact the have on programming. (Both real and imagined.) Top Gear would be much better on a Specialty station.
Sure, what they are going to DO in Topgear is scripted but not the stuff they say. I really dont know Adam Carolla but I will check him out. Sure USA have a few greay commedians but England kinda own that whole concept. As soon as they get any kind of famous in they come to USA and rock because there are so many of them in England its easier for them to stand out and cash in the big bucks in USA. Stuff like John Stewart is great but it runs on rails. Very little oportunity for improvisation.
Actually the stuff they say is scripted. They write it and obviously improv but it's scripted nonetheless.
Not to be argumentative but there are not that many English comedians who have done well in the US. Russell Brand and Ricky Gervais come to mind but the rest are on moderately successful shows. There are way more Canadian comedians than anyone else actually. British comedians benefit from the "panel show" formula in Britain but that does not mean the unique British humor translates.
Jimmy Carr and Michael McIntyre would not do well in the US because their humor would not translate well.
As for the Daily Show; aside from a "panel show" I think it is easily the most loosely scripted shows in TV. Think about it; when was the last time you saw Jon get through a show without laughing at his fellow presenters. Everyone goes off script constantly on that show. The Colbert Report by contrast is similar to Top Gear in that it is scripted but there is room for improv.
Just because you dont know them doesnt mean they didnt become big in USA. Craig Ferguson Sasha Baron Cohen (Borat) The entire Monty Python gang. Jack Dee Jimmy Carr Russel Brand Eddie Izzard Billy Connolly Hugh Laurie from House. Ricky Gervais Are just top names that I can come up with right now.. There are obviously alot more and probably some that I dont know. I dont know what you base it on but nobody writes the TopGear shows.

I think the fact that the show is rough around the edjes gives it that special something. Anyone who is offended my Jay's observations obviously doesn't understand sarcasm. I love the show and watch it as often as I can on BBC America. They probably use all the extra money to buy all those expensive cars they abuse. I'm glad they didn't go ahead with the American version even though I'm American. The British sence of humo(u)r and their personalities really make the show what it is.

I like Top Gear a lot, mostly for the humor, and the car reviews. But at the same time, I just hate how they automatically think everything that's not from GB is shit and not worth attention. But the show often rebounds from that negative quality with classic humor and blatant observations.

@toyoracing89 They are equally scathing about Brit cars - especially old saloons like the Marina. the only cars they don't knock are Italian. They love Alfas, ferraris and Lambos. They do show a sneaking regard for Japs and were very positive about their cars in the latest American 'Challenge' . Anyway, they are mainly entertainers and what they say should be taken with a pinch of salt.

@DavidMJordan True, I agree. It does not really bug me as much as it used to. Now their insults are quite hilarious, especially when they fail to acknowledge the quality of British carmakers being matched and exceeded by that of even Japanese and...gasp, America. But overall, it's a good show to watch with a great deal of humor and is always interesting.

I think that Jay Leno is great, and while American humour doesn't always go down as well this side of the Atlantic, his humour from what I have seen of it is hillarious. He's a big fan of Top Gear as he said, but also a huge fan of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Personally I would sooner they pulled a Top Gear USA programme, rather than kill it's appeal stone dead as they have done with other BBC remakes like "Life on Mars, USA".

What an arogant twat! It's called the Top Gear Hanger and and nobody ever pretended it more than a hanger, it wouldn't be nearly as good if it was taped in some fancy TV studio and they'd have to travel to the airfield for the track anyway. I expect they skimp on the comforts in order to provide a better show with awesome cars! Top Gear rules!

Not starting trouble but, you two are arguing over a show which is scripted for the viewers but then the cast are aloud to say what they want for example. they went to Bolivia recently , and they were set a challenge and also set so much money to spend in the country and also told when to talk about the cars and where, the show is massive over here, JC, RH, JM swears in this episode, which wasnt scripted, you both are arguing over who has made it big as a comiden, nothing to do with Jay Leno

He was afraid that he would not be able to replicate the same feel and rapour with the american public. It's pretty rare to have that kind of coheasion between presenters. Plus i heard the execs at NBC were getting too involved and apparently they know very little about the show.

I read that they canceled it because they said "the humor just wouldnt go home with an american audience" which is crap since they love the english one. They also said they wouldnt be able to be "honest" about american cars or they would "discurrage" advertisement infront of and following the show if they talked shit about american cars. Also.. would an american network allow potential harm to come to their presenters ? Going across Vietnam on scooters ? No insurance company would cover that.

Yeah that's all true and likely why the series would have failed. However, Adam Carolla was going to host the show and he would have Americanized the humor. However the studio/network execs would have destroyed the show with their input. They very rarely asses the key elements to an existing shows success.
The real reason they killed the show was the crisis in the US auto industry. I am in advertising and the spend for the majority of auto makers dipped significantly during the period.

They would have scripted it to death with a team of writers just like on Jay Leno, Letterman and all that. They wouldnt be able to find 3 people in the entire USA that could be funny on the spot AND know about cars. American humor is all about scripting and one liners. Which is why every single english commedian that go to USA get a major break, film deals and get to host talk shows. because they are naturally funny. NOTHING is spontaneous on american TV.

Well Top Gear in the UK is scripted. And Adam Carolla would have been a good start because he is really funny and knows quite a bit about cars. You should DL his podcast; it's #1 in the US and not full of 1 liners.
To be honest there are some excellent comedians in the US. And Jon Stewart's Daily Show is very spontaneous. The issue is the regulations here in the US and the impact the have on programming. (Both real and imagined.) Top Gear would be much better on a Specialty station.

Sure, what they are going to DO in Topgear is scripted but not the stuff they say. I really dont know Adam Carolla but I will check him out. Sure USA have a few greay commedians but England kinda own that whole concept. As soon as they get any kind of famous in they come to USA and rock because there are so many of them in England its easier for them to stand out and cash in the big bucks in USA. Stuff like John Stewart is great but it runs on rails. Very little oportunity for improvisation.

Actually the stuff they say is scripted. They write it and obviously improv but it's scripted nonetheless.
Not to be argumentative but there are not that many English comedians who have done well in the US. Russell Brand and Ricky Gervais come to mind but the rest are on moderately successful shows. There are way more Canadian comedians than anyone else actually. British comedians benefit from the "panel show" formula in Britain but that does not mean the unique British humor translates.

Jimmy Carr and Michael McIntyre would not do well in the US because their humor would not translate well.
As for the Daily Show; aside from a "panel show" I think it is easily the most loosely scripted shows in TV. Think about it; when was the last time you saw Jon get through a show without laughing at his fellow presenters. Everyone goes off script constantly on that show. The Colbert Report by contrast is similar to Top Gear in that it is scripted but there is room for improv.
