Obviously the hypothesis is whether or not the new backboards are strong enough to withstand both the fiercest dunks by one of the mightiest players in the NBA, and the weight applied by the piano. They're trying to prove that these new backboards really are indestructible by means of dunking. As shown, they are breakable, but not because of the rim, rather direct impact on the glass. Besides, science really is what you make it to be.

So even if he knocked out all of the glass, the rim would still remain and he'd be left looking like an idiot, his bosses might realise the whole "experiment" was a waste of money and that they should have used the time to run some highlights of Lebron and Kobe dunking on Yao and he'd be out of a job.
