Wonderful! I had not seen this since the original airing. Very stylish for its time. I remember noticing that this was the first prime-time show I had ever seen with such an extended opening teaser -- 5:41 until the opening titles! I don't think that was beaten until a Monty Python episode did an opening sequence until about 7 minutes was left. @johntechwriter: yeah, I tried to change the way I walked because of this.
Love all that spy TV from the 60's, like The Cat, Man From UNCLE, It Takes a Thief, etc. So many great shows back then that the whole country tuned in to watch.
Man, TV is so fragmented now. Back in the 60's, the whole nation was watching the same thing every night.
Fun to see the old commercials too. Man, the cigarette companies were all over us back then!
And of course, Rober Loggia is in the best movie of all time, Scarface!
I was a huge fan of T.H.E. Cat when it first aired. They created a unique background for the character that was cool. Loved that they didn't make him yet another cliche TV "private investigator" but a professional bodyguard instead.
The beginning is about all the daylight this show ever had. And yes. it''s ARmstrong...what a great voice he had. This very first episode is so much fun.. loaded with great music, and not in a hurry to get away from it.
T.H.E. Cat(1966),Robert Loggia's(The Sopranos) 1st major TV series who in the style of Bond is always asked his name at the beginning of the episode, replying,Thomas Hewitt Edward Cat Once a circus aerialist, cat burglar, and master jewel thief, now works on the other side of the law as a bodyguard protecting people's whose lives are in danger. He uses his acrobatic skills with his collapsible grappling hook to penetrate places. He also carries a throwing dagger and pistol secreted in an arm holster.
R.J. Reynolds, the makers of Winston, bought a LOT of ad time for its various brands on numerous dramas and action/adventure shows during the 1966-'67 season, 'starfly', including this series. They were also the alternate sponsor of "THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES", "LOVE ON A ROOFTOP", and primary sponsor of Richard Mulligan's "THE HERO" that season.
As a non-smoker, I can understand your comment about the Winston commercial, but as someone who loves pop culture and the '60s I also think you're forgetting that it's just a commercial. It is moment in time captured. I am aware that many breakfast cereals were (are!) packed with sugar, but their lack of health benefits doesn't stop me from appreciating a good '60s cereal commercial. Then, as now, people make their own choices with their health. Here, I'm just appreciating the trip back in time.
There were two more episodes of this excellent show and were removed out. Unfortunately, the two extra-episodes added were in black and white because one can understand how hard this show is to find out. Please, who has more episodes of TH.E CAT, please put them. This show was fantastic.

@gkatch22 And for a half-hour show to boot...nice touch in getting "The Girl from Ipanema" in the original Portugese.

This episode is entitled, "To Kill A Priest" and was Episode #1, first airing September 16, 1966. Great Winston commercial, too!

I agree the show was great, but cmon, the Winston commercial? That stuff was poisoning ppl, giving them lies and a false sense of security..........
