  • 7th chords or 7th intervals cause tension and minor notes added to a major key work well. Tension adds a lot of flavor and emotion to your music. As music theory minor, Ace knows his stuff.

  • Wow, you're amazing!

  • fuck :D you tensioned my brain :D when you make music it TALKS O.o

  • My head almost exploded from all that tension. dont listen to this if you want to live!

  • How do you make more notes suddenly appear on your piano roll? T.I.A.

  • would be nice to make collaboration with u ,id learn so much doing it live with smbdy who knows whats what

  • The hole Loveless album(with my bloody valentine) is about tension and relief I think. Very good album thought

  • uänson

  • DAMN!!!

    NICE

    helps me a lot.. :D

    thanks from germany ;)

  • You should teach music @ a school if you don't already.

  • Ace pincter, make it simpe call him ACE.

  • great video..thanks

  • Not sure if this will help or not since your post was over 2 months ago lilscrapbook82, but if you go to piano roll options, helpers, and check detect scale, then after you play or paint a few notes it will show you the scale you are working with indicated by the light gray in the grid. The darker areas are not in the scale you are using.

  • @glnwst Thanks for that helpful bit =)!

  • Another excellent video, Thanks Ace.

  • Ages ago (2000, precisely) i took guitar classes. The professor kept talking about how notes asked and what the answers were, but i wasn't interested in knowing music, i just wanted to play cool songs. I regret not learning back then, and, almost 10 years later...here i am, learning music. :D

  • PROFESSOR PINCTER in da hizzle fo shor mang.

Please keep doing what u do; mad shouts 2 NZ!!!!

  • Hi man! Is that note panning down in the piano roll? Thanks for answer. I am a fan of yours.

  • 4:35 (about), that was really cool. The repetation thing, I really gotta try it.

Thanks for all these tutorials. Really helpful!

  • actually that NIN tune is more on the Depeche Mode music trip.

thatz the D major-minor scale with the minor 7th, and it always sounds dark and mysterious like a vampire movie.

    haha

this is good for beginners that need to see the various styles and tricks

    cool vid, man

  • Hi Ace, big fan of the videos.

One question, at 6:36 you reference that the 'FL Helper' says that the F was not in the song's chord. What is this exactly- is there a tool that tells you if a not is in/out of the song's key?

    Thanks

  • i have been doing it unconsciously over the year!

  • i think you meant flat 7th, not sharp, because that's just an octave

  • Thanks!

  • very interesting subject matter here. good stuff to think about , thanks ace.

  • love the videos man, helps loads!

  • You're awesome man. Where did you find the midi for Hurt anyway?

Also where would be the best place to find midi files of songs? I'm guessing we'd have to pay for them but I haven't looked so I'm still hoping.

  • Google: [song name] midi

  • Thanks everyone -

I try to make my turorials jam packed with thoughts and ideas that really make my audience understand it intuitively -

Because of this, it is hard to come up with enough solid material to make a video! I'm glad to be back and I'll have some very thoughtful new approaches coming out soon.

As long as my new GF doesn't keep me too worn out :)

  • Awesome and informative video as yours always are. It's a little hard to hear your voice over the sound produced by FL though. I find myself reaching for the volume control a little too often.

  • Will proof next time : new mic

  • You sound alot like that actor that played max headroom....matt frewer

    good vids...keep them coming

  • So glad you are back in our lives. Great vid dadio.

  • the scale used at 5:20 is the one used on westside connection - the gangsta the killa and the dope dealer, idk if u knew that

  • I absolutely love these videos on music theory. I noticed some commenters suggested you say what notes or chords are used. I disagree. I think what makes your videos unique is that they strip the theory right down to the principles. There is no pretension in your videos and that's what makes them as good as they are. You can SEE the musical principles at work. I've come to understand musical concepts you've shown -- that I've thought I've known for years -- at a gut level I never imagined.

  • awesome, and interesting :)

  • kewl man, thats what its called, along with phasing thats really handy!

I read a brief sentence about something called an 'ascension'? ( i think thats what its called, i'll check and get back to yas)

Something about going from a sus2 or sus4 to a major chord? - Does anyone know what thats about?

  • Thanks alot man.

Gonna try to apply this to some project.

Good job, keep it up :D

  • Thanks ace. I would have liked you to mention the names of the chords you're using,

  • wow!!! Magnificent video!! Especially the quality in SD!!! Or maybe i'm already on HQ lol

  • Prima! Man, all of Ace's videos are superb. Every second is filled with twice as much info/wisdom than a normal second can even hold. And they're enjoyable too.

  • Dude ur a god

  • Welcome back, Ace! Your videos were missed :)

  • Great explaination of tension and how to create it, and a good analogy of 'the conversation of music' (Its particularly insigtful as music has its own syntax and enounciation...).

I'm learning that music isn't something mystic, random and without observable shape/signiture - yours is the technical/empirical method for making music, and making thses videos is very useful to many producers. Keep it up!

  • Yeah, AcePincter is back.

    Nice video! :)

  • heeeyyyy ace pincter....nice video!!

  • very awesome vid

  • awesome ... tnx.. been long seen you man :) how are you

  • Rhythm can also be used to create and release tension. A drum beat with an unnatural-feeling syncopation can be contrasted with a steady 4/4 beat, for instance.

  • wow...cool stuff

  • omg you used a melody from a song from nine inch nails...

  • Great video - and explanations - 5 stars

  • lol nice explanation of tension...

  • you are my guru :D

  • dude u r awesome.

i kinda feel this tune..if u r willing enough i wanna work on this beat....i mean i can simply make these patterns myself..but if u already hv the piano patterns only..i can add sum drum line, synths/leads, strings, and guitar.

plz let me know wat u think.

  • Great Video! Very Informative!

  • Very interesting,thanks.

  • dayumm... ineed to get up on my music theorie

    lol

  • Nice tut man

  • aaaaace pincterrrrr

  • welcome back acepincter <3
