You will have a lot of explanations about this little CHEF-D'OEUVRE of classical piano composition, into the life of Jehan Alain in the fabulous book of Bernard Gavoty who was a great friend of him, called "Jehan Alain, Musicien Français".

It was edited in 1945, just after the second War, and there is a re-edition of the eighties - concretely, 1985 - of this fantastic biography.

Alain is one of the most fabulous genious, absolutely alone, french composer.

From listening to his piano music, I get the impression that, like Beethoven, Alain liked to try his most experimental ideas out on the piano before using them in his larger works.

You could be right about that, but I don't know enough about Alain to be able to qualify that.
