We should not be surprised that Lynne struggled with issues of racial identity. I really was not her fault, either. If her adoptive mom was white, then I am not stunned that she felt white growing up. Why not? Each one of us can choose how she wishes to see herself. Culture is not just reflected in how one looks. It is in the heart, too.
I cannot blame Lynne for being in tears at the end. Who wouldn't wish to be truly loved and accepted? That is an amazing feeling and good for anyone.
I'm korean adopted into a chinese family. I was raise chinese. I have found no problems with the culture differences nor have I ever really thought about the fact that I had missed out on another culture. Jst being "Asian" made it okay for me to be assimilated into another asian culture. It wasn't pointed out that I was out of place or something was missing... interesting
i think her mother accepted that her daughter was asian (idk), but what she was mainly trying to accomplish was that it doesn't matter what her daughter looked like. she was her daughter and she loved her
One also has to look at the environment she was in. Where did she live that people make such a huge deal about her being asian? Probably in some hick town. It should just be a non-issue.
yup, this is the natural end point of lunatic leftard policy. You have a worthless woman adopting a non-white from some foreign country, and she will naturally never fit in. This is not "racism" only a retard would think such a thing. This is just the natural response to blatant rejection of reality by liberals.
The woman should be killed for adopting a non-white instead of having white children. The gook shipped back to her home country where she will fit in. All reasonable solutions.
Sounds like the person that adopted her did a pretty shitty job. Now you've got a mentally damaged Asian that spends her days wanting to be white. Sad.
I think when you ignore your loved one's ethnicity, you're saying "What you are isn't good enough for me and I can't handle that." Sweeping differences under a rug and pretending they don't exist is immature and hurtful.
id rather live and be raised as an orphan than getting adopted by some random rich white family, calling them my dad and mom. adoption is a cruel. treating human beings as if they are their pets. Not cool. white people should just adopt white babies/infants rather than adopting asians, it may be joyful and fun for you white folks, but not for kids while they are growing up. it's cruel. i would rather be raised as an orphan than being treated like a pet in a white family.
I think that this video sadly shows the sorry state that the Asian community is in. There are too many Asians that think that they are white, and therefore feel no affinity or empathy with any other group of people, not even their own, so when they feel racism, it goes over their heads, or they try to rationalize it with, "They can't POSSIBLY mean me! I'm white! I'm ~*SPECIAL*~! I'm not a freak like the black/latino/other asian kids!"
It looks like she had White adaptive parents who were simply being in denial and afraid to address racial issues.
These type of White parents were doing a disservice to the adopted children, as obviously racist Whites were teasing and discriminating against the children because of their race.
Smarter parents would celebrate racial diversity and allow the children to be proud of being Asian and adopted by White parents, to create an interracial connection to show how good the world can be.
I'm Asian and damn proud of it. Why the hell would I want to be anything else? It's who I was born as and there's no point in dwelling on something you can't change.
its the kids who has to suffer throught all those race problems not the parents...in western culture as the children moves out of the parents house at a very early age,,just imagine those racial slurs and mental setbacks they face without parents and those questions that keeps arising intheir minds
It's a well known fact that most Asians who are adopted by whites will only hang around whites and eventually believe that they are white themselves. Instead of embracing their won culture or spending time around those who are non-white so that they get to learn what it's truly like being different.
@chibangin007 she just said she's korean, and this has nothing to do with china's population controls it's about adopted children and their parents ignoring their heritage.
No more tears no more pain or sorrow. No matter where you're from or what you look like or who your parents are God has a plan and a wonderful purpose for our lives. He is our heavenly father. Don't feel like you don't belong in fact no one belongs here. The truth "Jesus" shows us and sets us free.
They didn't bully her because she had asian eyes, they bullied her because she surely wasn't pretty. If she were pretty and asian they wouldn't have bullied her. The guys always looks after hot girls. That's our way of thinking.
If you're going to adopt foreign children, the right thing to do is to have the child raised bilingually. You need to respect where the children come from.
I believe your mom really loves you just like any mother would love their own. If she ever loved you any less, she would have told you that you look different and you are different. Do you really wants to hear those words from your mom? When your mom accepted you as her own daughter and loved you so much, how could she ever utter those words to your face? Have you ever thought about how she felt when you confronted her or told a story of that stupid boy in your school? Call her today!
@bugsy4173 are you a korean adoptee? if not then it's clear you have no idea what it's like. I am a korean adoptee and know exactly what she's going through and how it feels. her mom may love her with all her heart but she shouldn't deny that her daughter isn't Korean. so don't talk like you know everything.
The Only Reason why Orientals in America cling towards Americans(Caucasians) are because they have the Money and Power!!!!! So it's understandble for people of Foreign to try to be "White". But Just keep in mind, YOUR NOT WHITE and Caucasians will let you know it, with a smile too hahahaha!!!
I hate it that still today people have prejudices and have certain behaviors connected to certain races .. if all people would speak the same language live in the same country and had many things in common .. racism and prejudeces where history ... so the best solution would be to create a global government !
@chabi3000 That's what the New World Order is doing behind the screens.
But You're never going to get rid of racism and prejudices in the world, because without those things most governments wouldn't be able to mind control the mass of people in their nation and most countries don't want a group of free thinking people with no prejudices to anyone. I hate to say it, but when You look at the world, that's how it is run behind screen.
if you feel threated by a child's heritage then don't adopt that child. If you feel that everyone should only learn western world heritage because we are the "EXACT" same you are wrong. True we are all HUMAN so we are the same that way. Yet we have to be taught the knowlege of ourselves to function in a balanced fashion.
I don't have the same story, but my sister was raised for about 1 year with white couple, because of my own's family situation (my sister looks chinese, but she's not really chinese, it's a bit complicated, because being "Chinese" doesn't mean much, because, just like europe, there are so many cultures , anyways back to my point, those white couple were really loving and nice, and they were such nice people.....
Any parents who adopt a racially different child should know that the child will look different, and that difference cannot and should not be concealed.
STOP ADOPTING CHINESE or KOREAN BABIES YOU LAME ASS, BORED ASS, WHITE AMERICANS! ADOPT BLACK BABIES! THERE IS A FUCKING SURPLUS IN YOUR GODDAMN COUNTRY YOU FUCKING RACIST RETARDS! WHAT? YOU TOO SCARED OF BLACK PEOPLE SO YOU ADOPT THE RACE OF MODEL IMMIGRANTS YOU TWATS? GO FUCK YOURSELVES!
I wonder why people are making so many abortions while other so many people desperately want a child and get it from abroad.
The good thing is that these adoptees have been raised by families of the nation they've been brought into, and hence are they better than immigrants. And Koreans are much better people than all others from who knows what 3rd world countries who export their babies at the lowest price of the market.
This woman seems to not get her mom just saw her daughter. A mother does not see race or nationality when she looks at her child, but rather see just her child who she loves the world over. This woman should be thankful for a mother who loves her, and doesn't treat her daughter different. I believe I would of said I saw my daughter to if I were in the same situation.
And Last But not Least the Way they use there size. 95% Of Asians Are under 6 feet tall or shorter than A European American But they created Such a good fighting style

she should'nt care about what others think, when I was like 5-9 I was teased for being asian and different I did feel the way she did but I got over it I love to be different and im mixed on top of that xD. she should embrase it plus its not like there are'nt other asians here seriously wth your not the only asian in america! get over yourself, she makes it seem like its embarrassing to be asian >.>
Her mother should have at least tried to inform her on her Korean culture. Her mother kept ignoring what her daughter tried to ask her instead of telling her about her culture. What did she think she could just keep ignoring this until she was an adult? Her daughter would have gone around town saying shes white when shes asian. That's not fair to the child.
More than four million people have been adopted between 1971 and 2001. A quarter million of those were adopted from other countries.
Four Million!
Why don't we hear more about these problems if they affect all adoptees?
Growing up is a painful process for all kids and being different is certainly a big obstacle but it's not the only obstacle. There are far worse things that can and do happen to kids.
This young woman's pain is real but, sadly, I think we're a nation of crybabies.
As a Korean adoptee, the issue with her and most adoptees are very complex....we deal w/identity issues that stem from lack of "mirroring". (look it up). They deal with being raised in cultural differences that biologically affect our view of ourselves.
Without the proper parenting and raising of an adoptee, this identity complex becomes lessened, however it takes unique parents to help us with this. If you look at the nation as a whole, then yes, we are a lot of things, including unempathetic. So please, if you've never experienced being an adoptee refrain from comments. Just like I would never comment about the repercussions of being raped.
Adoption is a well-kept misinformed issue across the board. that's why documentaries like this are around...to educate the public. the lack of communication on the subject and knowledge of it mirrors the complexity of the issue that we as adoptees, parents, and a society are just fully coming to understand. so please become educated before you become exacerbated.
Nah things would've been easier if she decided to be more clear about things and not hope for some perfect future where her perfect white prince charming will come to her rescue and make amends for all the prejudiced white people.
It feels good to blame whitey for "stealing" Korean kids, but life in a Korean orphanage is worse.
There is very very little adoption within Korea, but plenty of orphans because family lines are so important. Kids in Korean orphanages are starved for attention, and their adult lives will be stunted due to the lack of family connections. Plus, women in Korea face a lot of impediments unheard of in America.
The problem is not that you are Korean, White American or some gay shit like that. It's just that you're so incredibly ugly. You are crying all the time because people in school remind you how ugly you are. Since you like to be in denial, you play the race card and say the problem is racism... One day you got to face the reality that you are just the ugly duckling raised by a bunch of people who thought: "Asian adoption is in these days, let's give it a whirl!"
My husband and I are in the process of adopting from China. This video confirms our pledge to make sure our child always knows where she came from. Maybe some of you think it's wrong, that's your opinion, but in our hearts we know we are doing the right thing; we will never discount our child's heritage.
Congrats! As an adoptee of color I suggest one thing. Don't forget that HISTORY defines the CULTURE. The child needs to know the history before the culture. Other wise good Luck. :)
@FlyingMimi It is certainly not wrong. I have a somewhat similar story to Lynne. I'm black but adopted in a white family. My parents gave me all the love in the world. They were great parents. But they did not understand that I was too black for for white people, too white for black people and was given wrong advice. I think it's important when adopting a child to truly understand the childs background yourself. But then again, I was a child in the 70's and 80's. May be now it's different.
@shadesparty very interesting story. I imagine there are many folks in similar situation as u.. being black, and adopted by a white family.. i wonder if there are any societies or associations for black kids adopted by white families.. Obama is kind of in a similar situation.. being raised by a white family in a white majority community? hmm...
@FlyingMimi My sister is adopted from China and we raised her that way; she knows she is adopted and infact she's very proud of it because it makes her the "chosen" one.
@FlyingMimi Adoption is not right! You are buying a human being. You are helping ripping families apart. You are supporting adoption agencies/social services get rich and badgering birth-mothers and birth-parents into giving up their blood line simply cause you want a child. You selfish human.
@FlyingMimi good for you. i hope all has gone well for so far. i personally think that if you inform him/her of their heritage it will lead to a healthy and stable childhood. they will be part of both the eastern and western culture. they will be very lucky.
@FlyingMimi I don't think you're wrong at all. I think it's important that you treat the child as your own, but see to it that she's aware of her heritage. Nothing wrong with that.
@FlyingMimi - I don't think your conviction is wrong. If you adopt a child of another so-called "race" it is important to raise the child so that they're aware of their heritage. Not because "race" is so important but because, whether we like it or not, at this point in the evolution of human society a lot of people do treat or relate to you different based on your "race". If a transracial adoptee isn't aware they're a different "race" than their parents society will damn sure rub it in.
It's very sad, I believe that most adoptive parents mean well, but probably dont know how to deal with the situations that come up in regards to adoptees and their feelings. I dont now how the programs work, I know classes are involved in the adoption program, most of the time, but in some cases it doesnt seem extensive enough. Communication and empathy are really important when connecting to your loved ones, especially when that loved one is an adoptee, there is a different level of emotions.
I don't think adoption sucks, but there are certainly adoptive parents who could do a much better job. I think that that is one of the key points to this film - that we as adoptive parents need to do better and also not act if racism doesn't exist.
I'm trying hard to understand the psychology of this all. Is it more that the adopted children have the feeling of not fitting in, or is it how some of the parents seem to dance around the subject and refuse to acknowledge it or play it off as something that doesn't matter, although it mattered to their kids? Like, if the mother had atleast tried to understand and see it thru her daughter's eyes would the issue have been half as painful?
I say it's more of the adoptee feeling like they don't fit in. Some adoptive parents do have a part in thinking their adopted baby is a blank slate, with no previous history, and that all the love in the world will make the differences go away.
it helps if the mother at the bare minimum acknowledges that her daughter is going through a lot. adoptive parents need to support their adoptee, even if they themselves feel uncomfortable.
I'm a (white) adoptive parent to an Asian child. My daughter should not have to be grateful for being given a basic human right - every child deserves a loving family. Your attitude is part of the problem. These children aren't charity cases - and they go through much loss before they are adopted. Stupid comments such as yours are part of the problem.
I was born and raised in America. But my nationality is pure 100% korean.
I never got anything about it though. Maybe once in junior high when I was starting to dress with skate clothes I think someone told me "you trying to be white?".
Like what the...Isn't skating a subculture anyways?
Other then that throughout that and even highschool and the little time I actually spent in college I never got shit from it.
i feel for you ... i knew a couple of adopted asians in hs but i didnt think they were going thru what you were going thru, now i feel like i shouldve talked to them more

@donnat @xxNightberryx @utube793
(continued)
Without the proper parenting and raising of an adoptee, this identity complex becomes lessened, however it takes unique parents to help us with this. If you look at the nation as a whole, then yes, we are a lot of things, including unempathetic. So please, if you've never experienced being an adoptee refrain from comments. Just like I would never comment about the repercussions of being raped.

@donnat

White people love adopting asian children... I wonder why that is...

Thing would've been easier on her if people in school didn't act so stupid and her parents wouldv'e talked to her

What a girl.
Remember my Korean friend, never wish to be white, you'd only be unhappy.
tybash 2 years ago
The problem is not that you are Korean, White American or some gay shit like that. It's just that you're so incredibly ugly. You are crying all the time because people in school remind you how ugly you are. Since you like to be in denial, you play the race card and say the problem is racism... One day you got to face the reality that you are just the ugly duckling raised by a bunch of people who thought: "Asian adoption is in these days, let's give it a whirl!"
Go back to Korea girl.

My husband and I are in the process of adopting from China. This video confirms our pledge to make sure our child always knows where she came from. Maybe some of you think it's wrong, that's your opinion, but in our hearts we know we are doing the right thing; we will never discount our child's heritage.

@FlyingMimi
Congrats! As an adoptee of color I suggest one thing. Don't forget that HISTORY defines the CULTURE. The child needs to know the history before the culture. Other wise good Luck. :)
bluepenguinflyboi 1 year ago
@FlyingMimi It is certainly not wrong. I have a somewhat similar story to Lynne. I'm black but adopted in a white family. My parents gave me all the love in the world. They were great parents. But they did not understand that I was too black for for white people, too white for black people and was given wrong advice. I think it's important when adopting a child to truly understand the childs background yourself. But then again, I was a child in the 70's and 80's. May be now it's different.
shadesparty 1 year ago
@shadesparty very interesting story. I imagine there are many folks in similar situation as u.. being black, and adopted by a white family.. i wonder if there are any societies or associations for black kids adopted by white families.. Obama is kind of in a similar situation.. being raised by a white family in a white majority community? hmm...
upcycle 1 year ago
@upcycle That's false. Obama grew up in racially diverse Hawaii and some years in Indonesia with an Indonesian step father.

You selfish human.
ashatbulaparanormal 1 year ago
@ashatbulaparanormal
well sometimes you aren't ripping families or being selfish apart when the adopted child is an orphan dying on the side of a street.

@FlyingMimi good for you. i hope all has gone well for so far. i personally think that if you inform him/her of their heritage it will lead to a healthy and stable childhood. they will be part of both the eastern and western culture. they will be very lucky.

@FlyingMimi: Why adopt/import from abroad? Adopt right here in this country! Stop using these Asians and Africans as exotic pets!
n0gar 1 year ago
@FlyingMimi I don't think you're wrong at all. I think it's important that you treat the child as your own, but see to it that she's aware of her heritage. Nothing wrong with that.

@FlyingMimi It's not just about knowing where the child comes from, but how his/her race influences where she is.
cloudhidden 11 months ago 8

Suisyo 2 years ago 9
Knowing who we are and where we come from and where we fit in, is a right that normal people take for granted, and that adoptees don't have.
Adoption sucks.
Sammicsno 2 years ago
I don't think adoption sucks, but there are certainly adoptive parents who could do a much better job. I think that that is one of the key points to this film - that we as adoptive parents need to do better and also not act if racism doesn't exist.
silthefitter 2 years ago 51
I'm trying hard to understand the psychology of this all. Is it more that the adopted children have the feeling of not fitting in, or is it how some of the parents seem to dance around the subject and refuse to acknowledge it or play it off as something that doesn't matter, although it mattered to their kids? Like, if the mother had atleast tried to understand and see it thru her daughter's eyes would the issue have been half as painful?
aliciaftw 3 years ago 2
I say it's more of the adoptee feeling like they don't fit in. Some adoptive parents do have a part in thinking their adopted baby is a blank slate, with no previous history, and that all the love in the world will make the differences go away.
it helps if the mother at the bare minimum acknowledges that her daughter is going through a lot. adoptive parents need to support their adoptee, even if they themselves feel uncomfortable.

you're absolutely right! In fact....that's just called good parenting...adopted or not!! I am a korean adoptee by the way.

This is somewhat me.

I think the parents should at least awknowledge and maybe educate their daughter about her "native" Korean culture, if she's interested.
