Everyone knows that Akido has roots in Daito Ryu Aiki Jutsu and this art was and art of the Samurai just as Ju Jitsu was a Samurai art. I'm sure that over the thousands of years at war they learned from each other. I know that Morihei Ueshiba had adapted Aikijitsu to fit the lifestyle of high ideals. As for Brazilian Ju Jitsu it is Ju Jitsu that was adapted by a brazilian family, this means it is just a variation of ju jitsu not a holy art handed down from God.
I dont´ know Roy Dean but it seems like a very clean and respectfull practice. Ikkyo should thou not be grapped by the shoulder, but just right behind the albow. Also if Uke puts the other hand in the floor he can not be pinned down though the arm - the hips/knee must push into the body with the 2nd step - or with the hips outwards. There should always be resisstannce to Ikkyo. BTW Very nice videos. Thank you.
Aikido techniques are actually easier to execute if your opponent is large and strong. Their energy comes from the momentum of the attacker almost exclusively, so the strength and size of the practitioner becomes irrelevant when the techniques are done correctly.
this looks quite similar to aikijujutsu more towards daito ryu than yoshin kan. If i am correct, aikijujutsu predated and was the parent art of aikido and jujutsu
Against a straight punch yes, but it will be modified slightly. A hook no that's a different technique. Basic rule of them for when you watch these kinds of video is that if it's over the head it's also a straight punch. If it looks like a side ways "karate chop" it's for hook. If they are punching at the gut it's for an upper cut. Hope that helps :D.
@FCABRICKWORK Its not like the Japanese or Ju Jitsu own a copyright on these moves. This is performed in a very Japanese style, but this technique (or others which work on the same principle but from slightly different situations) can be seen in many different MAs worldwide. The body only moves in so many ways and so different peoples have discovered similar ways to manipulate it independantly of each other. I've trained Filipino and Japanese martial arts and both have many similarities.
@FCABRICKWORK The first technique is as the video says ikkyo which is from Aikido i say that because ikkyo the name literally means first technique and they came up with this generally undescriptive name when they were developing aikido. Thats why everyone says it aikido. The rest of the add ons are not aikido and are jujitsu so you are right but the main technique is actually an aikido technique(as he calls it by its aikido name).
I really respect Roy Dean. He effectively combines aikido and BJJ techniques. Aikido can be very effective if trained properly and if you have BJJ to complement it. By having ground grappling skills, one can use aikido techniques with more confidence. I believe I once saw a video of Roy Dean in a grappling tournament actually apply a standing arm lock for a brief moment before taking the guy down to the mat. I have the utmost respect for Roy Dean.
@bsumiko that video is on his channel in fact somewhere. My only issue with this is that Aikido carries a lot of history with in the types of attacks one is taught to defend against. For instance in this clip, all of Roy's movements are in response to tegatana. If one thinks about weapons and the historical roots of Aikido this makes a lot of sense. But who attacks in such way these days with out a weapon (a knife say, or club)?
Really good. The how-to-deal-with-reversals concepts are intuitively known to yudansha, who internalized tactile sensitivity and body mechanics, but they're not trained often enough in traditional Aikido schools.
never learned this move as ikkyo, I learned this as the suppinated lock from the thrust. From where osotou gari comes from the wrist.

Can you do it against a punch??

@IExpressART Yes. It's something of a twist the body to dodge, capture the hand, and then continue.

I started when I was 25. Enjoy it still. So you just start up on Judo or JJ. I like judo most..... But practice makes champions

yes

Possible, but very difficult...
It's not the best way to defend against jabs or punches.
