Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there; I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow, I am the sun on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circling flight. I am the soft starlight at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there; I did not die.
In the 1950's Maria Callas reopened the doors for the belcanto reportoire, but you sustained it for the next 30 years. Trills, scales, a soaring range, evenness of tone and a perfect legato line - your ubiquitous voice with it's agility and pearl timbre was perhaps not the most versatile - but where you stayed within your dramatic coloratura court you were incomparable; you were La Stupenda, the stupendous one.

The terrible wobble in her voice is obviously here. It's too bad she did not retire when her voice began to weaken. Later her voice was in shreds (around 1980) and the vibrato was so pronounced. Her high notes did not age well.
You are completely right!! But Joan`s fanatics will not allow to comment. I always think whether they have no ears and do not hear that or whether they refuse to admit their idol was getting older and her singing stopped to be as good as used to be. She always was able to sing anything, she had great technique, but her sound simply has ceased to be pleasant for me.
@jirizika1962 Thankfully you said "for me", because for millions it remained just as beautiful, albeit different in the sense the timbre became thicker and more "clouded", but very beautiful in its own way. After all, she was more of a dramatic coloratura soprano, and having a heavier voice is no problem in that repertoire. As for getting older, that's what happens with everybody, especially singers. Sutherland's voice got older, but what does it say about her artistry? Nothing.
@Homoclassicus You go, HC! Bonynge said he preferred her voice in later career, and I agree with him. Still opulent and rapturous but with more facets. The 1980 Covent Garden Lucrezia is absolutely one of best achievements, as was the 1984 Anna. The 1981 Lincoln Center Concert is, to my ear, without parallel.
it's not a wobble that she had. she never had a wobble. her high notes lacked their earlier power, but they were still there. To say her voice was in shreds is a flat out lie. There's videos beyond 1980 where she sings wonderfully. And if you knew what the f*ck you were talking about, you'd know that sutherland tried to quit several times, but people kept trying to keep her going, so she did. And even so, I'm personally not huge on Sutherland, but I still don't spit terrible lies about her voice
What is the name of this aria? Thanks!

Extraordinary...
La Stupenda o The incomparable...
Her secret...
Effortless, warm, vibrant...
Freely, powerfully, intensely...
Clarity and finesse...
Her voice was so naturally glorious...
Una diva
