Nona Hendryx was the queen of the NYC club scene during the early 80's. Caught her show at the Paradise Garage, The Ritz (currently Webster Hall),and the China Club (currently under construction as another Condo). To those of us in our twenties- then, she was "old and sexy" for she was in her forties. Club goers quickly learned upon withessing her show, that age was just a number.
I saw her t the PARADISE GARAGE too! AMAZING I was entranced! Beautiful woman - very talented. The profundity of these lyrics are true through anf through! Love her...
Credit to Carol & Kevin from Rough Trade. Never could get enough of them, but I love this tune, still have the vinyl. Listen to it went I get 'alternated'.
My first session at Counterpoint was the early version of this material. It was too much for the public but blew us away. Later while at RPM I bumped into Nona while she was cutting this tamer version. 28 years later it's still strong!
This is truly my absolute favorite song in its genre of all time. This song is so spiritual, about all of our lives through all of time, all of our karma, how we are One...and has SO MUCH SOUL. And God can Nona sing.
@1sotrue What do you mean? Mic Geronimo's "Nothing Move But The Money" completely samples this song. By the way, are any of you guys a bit frightened of that "OOOOOO" sound that plays throughout both songs? <=(
Nona was HOT! HOT! HOT! in the gay bars in the 80's! Now the bars don't even support gay artists............they're too busy playing that hetero Hip-Hop crap. So much for moving forward.
I never knew who did this song, but I clearly remember hearing it for the first time like 20 years ago. This has to be the first time I've heard it in 20 years. Very nice groove. Thanx for posting
Well Grace Jones was the prototype to this artist. Remembering ms Jones the stuff did with Dunbar and Shakespear at compass point studios Nassau Bahamas.
@massrepeat Nonsense. Nona was in Labelle years before anyone heard of Grace Jones. I happen to like Grace Jone's image, but Labelle was wearing space suits, flying in from the ceilings, since the early 70's. Even Kiss and Parliament co-opted Labelle's outrageous
@ccverve Are you talking about the PARADISE GARAGE in NYC?!? That place was the bang! I only went on Wednesday nights, and just hearing the name brings back some pretty cool memories! I also saw the Erythmics' "Sweet Dreams(Are Made Of This)" video there for the first time, if I recall correctly... That was the joint!
@sapphyre7 I speak of the one and only!! Everytime someone tells me "You're outta your mind!" I think of how they may be correct...Paradise Garage was a mind altering experience..never experienced another club quite like it!!
I remember that too! In fact, I think they were walking around an empty pool, in the dark, at an abandoned house. Spooky episode, and this song went perfectly with the episode and that scene.
