Germans who came in 1941 never killed or deported our people for no good reason unlike the Soviets. In 1944 Germans retreated and Soviets occupied our country again and continiued with their atrocities against our people for 50 long years.

I Served in the modern Estonian Army. Our Political Leadership is at fault, we should have had Tanks, Helicopter Gun Ships, Jet Fighters/Bombers a long time ago! They are making the same mistake that the pre war Republic's leadership did, The Lack Of Heavy Weaponry.

As a NATO member, Estonia doesn't need it. Every tank that sits and waits on a base, is a fleet of busses that never gets built and used. Every jet fighter is a few cutting edge high schools that will never be built. Every helicopter gunship, is a hospital that never saves someone's life.

The pre-war republics were living in a different world. There was no NATO alliance to shield them from attack. Estonia's military might is NATO.

As a veteran of Both the United States and Estonian Armies, knowing what is required of NATO members, let me put it lay man's terms, there are no free lunches here, no "Welfare states, Every NATO member state is required to have the tools to do the job. Modern Armies are equiped with, Tanks, Helicopters, Fighters,Bombers etc. Estonia has to pull it's own weight, NATO has told the Estonian leadership this and will continue to do so. It is correct that Estonia will purchase Tanks, ETC.

Yeah, a degree of armament is necessary. I have a hard time believing that NATO and its leadership countries advise member nations about how to arm themselves, based solely on defense concerns.

A huge part of the U.S. economy is tied to military manufacturing. Large arms are the currency that Western nations (US, UK, France) trade for mineral rights/natural resources. Its also a lot less politically toxic than collecting a tax to pay for NATO support.

Believe me, I live a few minutes from the U.S. Pentagon. I grew up here and my friends' parents were all generals and other high ranking brass -- I know the value of military power. Still, heavily arming Estonia is a gesture at best, and economic blunder at worst.

The thing Estonia can do to best increase its security, is continue to build a strong relationship with Europe, but even more important, because an abnormally vibrant economy. The eastern NATO members that are in frequent danger of economically-induced political upheaval, are a necessary burden for the West. An E. Europe nation that holds its own, is a friend, not a burden. The one upside to Eesti helping Greece, is that the EU will remember Eesti as competent and honorable.

Israel can afford its massive military, because the U.S. sends $6Billion in military aid there every year, and they have wealthy donors from around the world to donate money directly to the Israeli state. They also have the world's largest diaspora who supplements their economy and military through direct donation and assistance. there is no other country on Earth that can do this.

Sorry, I misread your comment about Israel. Estonia is creating a serious lobby in the US and Brussels by helping save the EU and Euro from falling apart. The best way I can think of Estonia getting close to America, is by creating some incredible technology that Americans love -- some medical technology, maybe some incredible trains or energy technology. People LOVE Skype. they really should have made it so that everytime you use it, you see that it was created in Estonia.

Heavy military invest by Estonia will only choke economic growth. I know some people have a hard on for war and grudges to settle with old enemies, but strictly economically speaking, Estonia can't afford it. Estonia wont even set aside the money to build a passenger rail connection to western Europe.

The only way Estonia could create military leverage against Russia, is with nuclear weapons. If they did that, Russia would turn off the gas and strangle the economy.

The key to Estonian security, is strengthened ties to Western Europe, which is what the govt is doing by saving the EU and the Euro by bailing out Greece. Estonia is earning its respect in the EU by proving making the EU nations morally in debt to Estonia. This is the opposite of other Eastern European countries, which West Europe simply views as necessary liabilities/burdens that must be carried to decrease Russia's power.

On the break of the fall of soviet union 1989-1990 Estonians were the first nation within soviet union who broke away and became independent, the second nation were Azeri`s who payed a tragic price for independence in 1990-1991.Even though russians form minority, the major influence comes from abroad, from US and Russia. In north Caucasus russians already russianizing the territory, Putin wants soviet states back..
