Ultimate DOS machine? Not quite sure about that, but a good showing of some "Golden Age" DOS software! Sadly all of my computers slow enough to run all of the archaic games have long since died... MY Ultimate DOS box is a Pentium 75 running Windows 95 (which, contary to popular belief, is just a fancy GUI running on top of DOS 7). One of these days I may have to install one of my 5.25" floppy drives in the frame and break out my video cam. to record some classic games!
You know... I've got a pretty sweet gaming rig in a case that's from 1999... It's still got the Pentium stickers on there, underneath the new AMD stickers lol...
And not to mention my keyboard from 2003, but besides that everything else is nice and new.
Is that actually two 3.5" floppies or is one of them a ZIP drive? I didn't think it was possible to have more than two floppy drives (including the 5.25" drive)?
@thelyniezian Another floppy isn't real! If you watched the part 1:15 where he insert diskette to 5.25" drive, and then watched what he typed to DOS 1:28 , He typed: "B:\", what means he's 5.25" drive is B:\ and floppy drive is A:\. Third drive is just plastic fake floppy. If you watched the computer's startup, fake floppy drive's indicator light doesn't light up. 2:10
No, the "Turbo" button was meant as a way to quickly downclock the CPU for older DOS software (especially games) that ran too fast on the "turbo" (native) speed of the CPU. There are early DOS games that only work at normal speed if played on a 8086 CPU running at 4.77MHz - anything else and they'd run too fast.
You know what? Pigs indeed are intelligent animals. Sir Paul McCartney noted in his Glass Walls documentary that pigs are particularly great at playing video games -- provided they're not put in filthy factory farms.
@computergeekguy The turbo holds no special function. If it wasnt there The computer would go as fast as possile, or its usual reaction when the button is pressed.
If the button is NOT pressed however, IT FORCES THE MACHINE TO WORK SLOWER!!
@static1994 The turbo button was to conserve electricity, so basically it's the technology used on some notebooks and netbooks right now. There's nothing new, just well forgotten past.
@volodyanarchist Oh... that explains alot...It seems to be standard these days in the "power options" menu though, rather software than hardware... They put the turbo button on netbooks?
Is it an actual button or a setting on the computer?
@epicKiipa the turbo button did nothing for me. just display some lights showing what faster clock speed it was going at but didn't actually change anything but the lights.
@GAKtion64 The Turbo button makes the system go fast or slow. My old 486 machine has a turbo button; whenever I push the button to make it go slow, it slows down to 16MHz, with the button pressed in, it goes to 120MHz. Without it hooked up, it still goes fast at 120MHz. I set my display to display 138 with the turbo button pressed in, and 1JG without the button pressed in. I messed around with the jumper settings on the board.
I had one just about like this and played games that (supposedly) required a Pent-1. 1-5-1/4 drive, 2-1.44m drives, 2-HDs, Sound-Blaster card, ?Video-Card (I forget) 486-DX4-100 cpu, extra-memory, and can't remember what brand / model motherboard. I think it might still have it, or some of it. lol
@croEdHunter Yeah man, I had the same tower case for my first ever AT-compatible computer, but it wasn't quite as decked out as that one. Only had one floppy and no CD-ROM. My turbo button wasn't missing and was fully functional though :)
Ahh, the days of 386es with separate floating point co-processors, oh and fast-page SIMM RAM... Those were the days.
Ultimate? Does it have Vesa local bus? Gravis Ultrasound? Co-processor? SCSI drives that need two men to lift? and a walk-in power supply? I think not! :o)
@kurisux LOL - Really, it was pretty whacky what we did all those years ago! That said, IBM announced the other week that the PC is dead. I also found my old IBM PC and XTs in the loft so maybe I should do a video?!
"Gravis Ultrasound", would love to find one of those, for collection, but not good for games due to not compatible with the card, you had to emulate a Sound Blaster using the "SBOS" software included with the GUS.
@RetroPCDOS Damn, you're right - I'd forgotten that! :o) I also remember the drivers being >MASSIVE!<, I found them online recently and they where tiny. I liked one of the module files that came with it - it plays perfectly in software now.
i bet there are a lot of kids who saw that 5.25 drive and thought "what the hell is that?" I bet theres even some people who didn't even recognize the 3.5 drive...
Amy's First Primer was awesome. I remember when I about 5 in 1995 my mom bought some 3.5" floppy disks with shareware games on them. We had an IBM 286.
that cooler is waay to big, i have an original cooler from an ancient pc =P i even got RAM, i think they are 4mb each, the small and fatty ones, DK what they are though)dimm ddr etc, i dont know the older names for them)i even have a computer with a key, that cuts electrical power of osmething, it wont turn on if its "locked" LOL
@scsd06273 In the "pre-Pentium" era that button doubled the CPU speed for running DOS-based heavy programs or games (sort of legit overclocking) but it went useless with pentiums
@Renatodonadio No, Turbo wasn't "legit overclocking." The turbo button ran the CPU at the rated speed, and turning it off reduced the speed for compatibility with older programs. I remember it very, very well.

Wow. That case brings back LOTS of memories. Didn't everyone and their mother have these cases? I had a 486 system that used that very same case. Who manufactured it?
I'll post a video response when I finish building mine. I just scored an excellent desktop case from the late 80's. The machine has high and low density 5.25's, a 3.5, and a DVD-ROM drive. Runs 120mhz, 10 gig hd, the hard drive is partitioned and has DOS 6.22, Windows 3.1, and Windows 95.
This is a nice machine, has me pumped up to get mine finished. DOS days!

DOS days!

Ooh nice. How did you manage to get 3 floppy drives installed? Has one been mapped to d: or e:?

@retronuggetdev There are only two, actually. One is a piece of plastic.
