Actually I have had two back surgeries for the same issues. The first one was when I was 29 and it was done by an Orthopedic Surgeon. My recovery was swift and I had no symptoms at all for 13 years.

The second one was at 42 and it was done by a Neurosurgeon. It took a little longer to recover and I have some numbness in my feet. Don't know if the difference was my age, the surgeon, or the extent of the damage to my spine that made the diff.

Is your spondolysthesis acute or chronic? I suffer with chronic spondolysthesis and i find that physical therapy is excellent. Trust me, I was very resistant to the idea at first, and it takes time to feel a result but it does help.

Hey Nalts, I know what you are going through almost lol. At the age of 19 I herniated my L3 disk, it was not fun! Ask about a tenz unit. I used one, and it worked wonders! Also used for...shoulder pain, leg pain, anywhere in the back pain, arm pain, toe pain, window pane...whoops got carried away! lol, no but if you have not already give one a try! Hope you feel better!

About three years ago, I had to have back surgery for a doubly ruptured and split lumbar disc. If I can offer any advice it's to see a good trustworthy REAL doctor and don't mess with the chiropractors. If it turns out that you have to go into surgery, I'd say to plan for at least a month of being near-bedridden. Good luck and be well!

Nalts, my sister underwent back surgery for a herniated disk and it immediately relieved her pain. Her recovery was a few months but she was able to function pretty well during that time (she could work and go to school). You just can't lift anything heavy (can't pick up pets or your kids), bend overly much (like picking something up off the floor), etc when you're healing which can be cumbersome. Good luck with your surgery in the future, whenever it will be; I wish you and your family well!

As an aside, I had the surgery for a herniated disc in my neck just this past summer. Recovery wasn't fun, if I'll be honest, but its worth it to not have to worry about paralysis or losing control over my bowels.

Good luck with your surgery - my friends dad had a similar operation where they put this metal wire in his spine to straighten it. Apparently the injections they put into your back are releaving, and when you wake up they give you 'happy gas' which I've had when I had my wisdom teeth extracted :D

Hmmmm, I know you said you weren't supposed to see a chiropractor with the herniated disk, but honestly they often have better solutions to chronic pain than MD's do (even though I've been pretty skeptical of "alternative" approaches in the past).  You have to find one that is reputable and willing to adjust you for pain relief even if you don't necessarily buy all of the theories. They don't even always have to "crack" you anymore, there are gentler ways to perform the adjustment.
