I've tried to build a couple of these DIY steadycams with much frustration. Finally i gave in and spent $38 on a Cam Caddie and it's afforded me some amazingly smooth shots. It's the best answer for those of you searching for an independent setup.
@theHeadofbear Good for you! And I might add that when checking out cams for possible purchase, to check their on-board quality of steadyness features as well. My little SonyHDR-CX550V(about $1,000) gives steadier shots handheld than the $4,000 Canon XHA1 that I recently shot on. THAT is surprising!
@romshua Thanks. My favorite is during one of my newest videos on a special effects artist, as when he mentions hitting a toilet with a sledge hammer, I dubbed in a smash! then water running, audio. Makes me want to pick my feet up everytime!
