Heavens to Murgatroid! THANKS for posting this cool clip! I've been reading about this unfinished Welles film for many years but haven't been able see any footage until now. You've MADE my day & my week! :-)
Why do people smoke cigarettes? Come on, it's so obvious it is destructive to you and people I think do it because mainly it's a nervous habit and they think they need a way something to settle them down. This is why I like the movie star wars and other movies like fantasy movies, which don't have overrated stars smoking and pretending that the drama of their lives has to be the drama of everyone elses. Cigarettes are bad, mmkay.
Yes will this film ever be released??? In the little bits we have seen the direction by Welles seems daring and modern, and the acting by Houston excellent.
There has been talk for a good few years now about how the rights issue to this movie have finally been ironed out. This was done with the help of Peter Bogdanovich and the ever loyal late Gary Graver, yet still we are only tantalised by snippets of the great mans unfinished work. Please, all of these great Directors,Actors,Producers studio heads who wouldnt lift a finger to help him when he was alive, yet claim they were all influenced by him. Get The Otherside Of The Wind out there.
@GoldenAgeSk8Video Welles on the theatre: "The theatre has lost its narrative style… the novel took over… the novel exhausted itself and the movie took over from there. The movies can do narrative, character, ideas, mood – unquestionably the most flexible form imaginable."
Why return to a medium he felt was obsolete and still maintain his artistic vision?
@Scrubwell I've seen Citizen Kane about 20 times. The action in Kane waxes and wanes like the tides of the ocean. The action in this clip is a non-stop tsunami!!! About the only film I've seen that maintained a pace close to this is JFK with it's frenetic editing.
this clip looks much more suited to a stage/theater piece!! Not filmic @ ALL!!! :/ Hope this isn't what he showed at the AFI tribute!! Orson's biggest mistake after the notoriety of "Kane" and blacklist w."Ambersons" was NOT TO RETURN TO the THEATER where he could have had JOB SECURITY while directing actors for MUCH CHEAPER. INSTEAD he pursued a wandering broke ass career attempting to piece together unfinished films for the majority of his life!! Orson was much more suited for theatre!!
I have read for years that The Other Side of the Wind is 98 % finished. I spoke with Richard Wilson, an associate of Welles, in 1988 near Trenton, New Jersey at a 50 year anniversary of the W of the W broadcast. He was wistful, because a lot of his old friends were in that movie. In his heart he knew it was never going to be released. Edmund O'Brien was dead. John Huston was dead. Welles was dead. Richard Wilson is now dead, and now he can see The Other Side of the Wind.
It seems a lot more frenetic than his earlier stuff, which is ironic because I've heard that as they get older directors tend to tone down the editing... it's almost vertiginous.
This looks really fascinating! So this is about an aging film director and he's making his final film. But is this supposedly an erotic film, is it about how times of changed? Welles said that he'll use tape recorders, clips to guide this film. also is this a fictional documentary-film? Also, Welles mentioned that if he was a nineteenth novelist, he would have a 3 volume novel about this story, so is this a sort of like a biography story like Citizen Kane?
the film-with-a-film is meant to be a send up of those 'deep' films of the era, Antonioni, The Last Movie, all that sort of stuff. The aging Huston character trying to be hip and new has these long tracking shots, a 'red RED indian' (Oja Kodars character in the film-with-a-film - the woman in the sex scene) on the run from who knows what, and so on.
The actual film is presented as a composite of the matrial shot at the wrap party and the day leading to it.
it is supposidely being released in 2009 - only as a documentary, because Kodar will not approve the full length release because she doesn't want it to get messed up like other films
Martin P Fastbender is Pat McMahon. Pat was a co host of the Childrens Show; Wallace and Ladmo. When pat got the call from Welle's production company to turn up for at the shoot, Pat assumed it was a practical joke played on him by the other guys on the show. Pat is well know Broadcaster in Arizona. If you do a search for the KTAR and ad in his name you will get a full bio. I met Pat in 1994 and he showed me this footage that was taken from the same documentary. He was a huge Orson Welles fan.
Aha--thanks for the verification. I thought that was him, even though he was onscreen all of about 3 seconds (in this clip, at any rate).
I've lived in AZ off & on my whole life (53 yrs...so far), and basically grew up watching Wallace & Ladmo, yet I'd never heard anything about this--I really couldn't believe it--that's Gerald...Marshall Good....Boffo the Clown...in an Orson Welles film?!! Bizarre.
I don't suppose there's a snowball's chance it will ever be freed from the archives.
Bogdanovich was at the 2007 Florida Film Fesitval to accept an award and screen his film "Paper Moon". There was a Q&A after the screening and a friend and I asked him what the status of TOSOTW was. He said the legal issues were now almost out of the way, but he wasn't very specific about a release date. We met him before he left the theater and he sounded very committed to finishing it.
Great news!!! The Other Side of the Wind, Orson Welles' uncompleted film may soon see the light of day after 30 years in cold storage, Director Peter Bogdanovitch announced on 30 March. which starred John Huston as an arthouse director who turns to sexploitation to reverse his sagging career. Other cast members included Peter Bogdanovich, Dennis Hopper and Stéphane Audran. , but Bogdanovitch has confirmed that the film is "99.9% finished," and will receive a theatrical release in 2008
Yes, it was "The Other Side of the Wind", directed by Orson Welles, starring John Huston and Peter Bogdonavich. This clip might have come from the special features disc of "F for Fake"... another Orson Welles film. The 2nd disc has a documentary on Welles' unfinished projects, of which this was one. And curse his daughter for blocking the film's release.
Thank you for your comments. I understand that is the late great John Huston. However, thank you for the correction. I will add that Orson Welles was among one of the directors in this movie. As I mentioned, I hope that it will be avalible on DVD in the near distant furture. :)
Awsome video. How in the world did you happen to get a hold of this clip. A beautiful moment in time from the late great Genious Orson Welles himself. Thank you very much for posting this clip. I don't how you did it though but, its terrific. Keep up the great work. Hope to see it on DVD in the very distant furture. :)
positivedennis, we all understand this is not Orson Welles in this scene but, it is John Huston in this great scene! Also understood that Orson Welles directed this unfinished movie before he passed away in 1985. I hope that this information helps as others in this forum have tried to explain to you.
REEEEEEEEAAAAALLY Wish this was finished!... C'mon Orson, Become a Zombie and make a comeback!

My professor acted in this film and wrote a book about it. I interviewed him about it. What a crazy production process.

Could Welles have sustained this for an entire film?

From the look and sounds it is as if this was recorded from a hand held camera in a theater.

Part three was released as part of a documentary on Welles called "It's All True" in 1993, but the full film has yet to be excavated from the vaults.

This isn't Orson Wells. It is another famous director. John Huston? Yes it is I googled it.

People, the clip is *directed by* Orson Welles. John Huston was acting in this (unfinished) film, playing a film director named Jake Hannaford, IIRC.
