I do love this song though - the Roger's were blessed because of what they did... if I'm correct, that colt born from that mare ended up being the cornerstone of their entire racing/breeding program.
I'm not going to comment on eating companion animals - each country is different. I will say only two things... 1. There are far more humane ways to kill an animal than that of the slaughterhouse - there they panic, feel fear, and hear/watch other animals die. Even the long sleep with a vet isn't very fast. I'm not going into what methods are best - just know that they're out there - if we feel tht humans have the right to life or a quick death then why not the beings we're to care for?
OMG... all this bitching and whining about drugs how shameful, companion animals...
Horses in the majority are companion animals and deserve the dignity of a kind end even if it is only the vet and the long sleep.
Step up to the plate and DO SOMETHING other than complain.
I own two rescues, they are my joy the first has had a profound impact on my life, not the other way around. Adopt one or toss $10.00 at your local rescue.
the chemicals fed to horses to keep them healthy are carcinogenci to humans. The EU requires that the horses be chemical free for at least 180 days, the horses run through slaughter in Canada and Mexico are not.
@Moondance727 Why? In a LOT of countries horse is just as legitimate a source of meat as cow, pig or chicken... Sure, if you have the money to 'rescue' and nurse an old race horse, go for it... but not everyone does, can or even should...
@ClintonHammond do you eat cats and dogs? Horses are companion animals, have you seen what happens at slaughter? Horses are extremely intelligent and sensitive, there is no humane slaughter, the captive bolt does not work well with horses, and in Mexico they stab the horses several times trying to sever the spinal cord. Horses smell the blood as they approach the holding pen and the flight instinct takes over, they fight to flee, the capitve bolt was designed for cattle.
@Moondance727 Do -I- eat cat or dog? I haven't... yet... but lots of people around the world do, and I will not stoop to criticizing them because it might offend my sensibilities. I know people who keep rabbits as pets, but that doesn't stop me from BBQing a few every year, especially at Easter.
Let's agree that it's a helluva good song... Let's not clutter up this comment section with soap-boxing ok...
@ClintonHammond it starts with responsible breeding, did you know the federal gov gives subsidies to the racehorse industry to breed? What happens to those extra horses that don't make it, they are sent to slaughter, perfectly good horses, just not winners on the track. There is no humane slaughter and do you eat cat or dog? Horses are companion animals just as cats and dogs. In addition, the meat is not fit for human consumption, american horses are fed a carcinogenic cocktail to keep them

Excellent songstory -- as Tom Smith said in the "Seabiscuit" movie --- "Every horse is good for something and you don't throw a life away just because he is banged up a bit".
After listening to all of Stan's work, I naturally thought of Garnet as a great violinist sidekick; but recently I've been very pleasantly surprised to find that Garnet is also an excellent "stand" alone. It's interesting to note that he desired to include the violin even when he wasn't playing it himself, which I would say shows how much he truly appreciates it, as do I. I wonder if Garnet wrote the score for it, or let that to this Long fellow. My research of the Rogers family continues...
Thank you for posting this. Garnet has a truely beautiful voice in his own right. I try not to compare him to his brother, they are different people. This is a very sad song all be it a happy ending. Horse racing leaves many broken (spirit and body) horses. It is time to stop it. True horses love to run - but when they want to and certainly not when they are forced into it, starved ,depraved of water before hand, doped up on who knows what drugs to suppress the pain from previous injuries.
We had two old mares taken on for charity, destined to be dogfood otherwise. One was culled because she didn't come into season. She was already pregnant and we had a fine foal from her. Eleven years later they both have passed. They cost us thousands, but, I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. My YouTube handle comes from them. "Star" was the old mare and "Thistle" her filly. I'll never forget sneaking down to the barn at 3:00a.m. in midwinter to find her wet and newly born.
Thanks SO much for posting this!!! It actually brought tears to my eyes. I just wrote another comment where i said that Garnet was "not bad also", by comparison with Stan. i take that back: he's every bit as good, and songs like this prove it.
I heard Garnet play/sing this in northern BC Oct 2008 and on inside sleeve of the CD I bought is a picture of the mare. I told Garnet I so related to his stories about the mare as I had three of them; one a T'bred ex-racehorse discarded from the track. She's still my 19 year old 'lawn ornament'! Don't even have to be a horse owner to enjoy this.
Sent to my friend in Brisbane Qsld Aussie to share with 'Mango' the racehorse's mum! I know Mango's mum will like this!
I am curious....does Garnet ever Jam with his fiddler...I am bad with names, sorry. You guys must put on an awseome Show with two fiddles Jamming away.
I know you posted this a year ago but thought I would answer anyway. The album Summer Lightning is a live album with Doug Long and is well worth the purchase. There's some very powerful songs on there and they also jam out some tunes together.
I was recording my album in between the tunes on his album in the same studio...was this before or after the small victories album? The melody line is very different from the one on the CD, especially in the beginning.

This song is about doing the right thing. Ban horse slaughter in the US and ban the exporting of horses for meat.

The ironic thing is - that little foal grew up to become a VERY well knowN and valuable stallion for breeding eventing horses.
