Good point but I'm up on the 23rd Floor not at ground level - also the video was slowed down to see the flash (you can hear in the sound) which means the boom comes way after it did in reality. Thanks!

@MrJonnybingo This was taken in New Zealand not Aus =) No, we don't get many lightening storms...perhaps one like this every few years. There were hundreds of strikes that night which for NZ is rare.

You can determine distance by sound arrival - 300 meters per second = 600 meters away.

That's a good way to tell - unfortunatly I actually slowed it down on moviemaker as it strikes so you can see flash - notice the voice saying

"woah" is really low due to the slowing down of the seconds as it hits and just after,
